A bit too early to say anything conclusively, but I dig the way it plays, so far.  The graphics are, of course, not very impressive.

Even still, it's not impressive.  Pre-PS3 or 360 unveiling, if you had shown me this and told me it was running at 60fps, I would have been disappointed in next gen.  It's just not a visually impressive game.  From what the demo shows, I might go as far as to say that it is a step back from Lost Planet.

well...it's just two levels, i am betting the rest will look much better.

and...

360 version is better antialiased.
PS3 stutters very briefly from time to time. Not so the 360 version.

They a pretty close overall, but 360 version shows an edge. At least in these demos.

Ice Monsters AREN'T better on PS3, they were just in a different ice state at the time. Its also worth noting that the lighting on the top picture is quite different on the PS3, and I do believe I see a rendering error in regards to a shadow on the wall in the PS3 version.

Look at the cathedral in the background of the ice picture. Textures are universally resized on the PS3 version.

Title: Re: Devil May Cry 4 demo
Post by: MCD on January 24, 2008, 10:05:08 AM
My thoughts on the 360 demo:

1- X button should be the sword attack, not Y

2- right bumper need to be changed to right trigger

if i can change that in the final game like what gaffers said, then my 360 get would be complete.

The gameplay is so last gen it's untrue.
That kind of action has been left in the dust already, I'm afraid. It was already getting tired at the end of last gen.

just finished the demo - it really is quite dull for the most part. i'll stick pick up the final game but i'm expecting it to provide as much tedium and frustration as genuine thrills.

like Groo says, there is so much that is still stuck in last gen here. At least they've moved on from 2d backgrounds, but otherwise, it may as well be Onimusha. Fixed camera angles, static arenas connected by mystical doors that magically dissolve when the last enemy dies...and probably no save points for months and months.

groo, my boy, there is no such thing as last gen/next gen gameplay, if anything you should know better than that.

There's every such thing as last gen gameplay. This very genre basically picked up speed last gen thanks to Onimusha and DMC. As for LO/BD, in respect to their genre, they add very little, however the wall rule in LO is fresh, and bari-barrier in BD was something I'd not seen before too. Still, I love RPGs so they don't have to try hard to interest me.
well, DMC4 added snatching enemies for more combos.

maybe it's not big, but it sure adds to the fun.

2- lock on targets and press Y, Nero will dash forward with a nice looking slash.

finally beat Berial. doing the aerial bodyslam with him was FUCK AWESOME. i haven't cackled like that at a game in ages! man, though, i suck at dodging his strikes, and how do i defend against the fireblast thing when he gets up after being slammed? i just beat him by shooting his head until he stood up, grim grip, slashed his head and finished with a devil bringer. rinse repeat x 4, but i could only jump his sword maybe half the time, i could never figure out how to avoid the fireblast.

this game is a lot easier than dmc3 and i like that, because i usually totally suck at these fixed-camera action-combat games. and man the art direction is fuckin' great. sadly, i think i like it with the ps3 controller better, and the visual difference isn't that big -- the 360 version looks a little cleaner and has smoother fly-bys (yet i can't fathom why there's none of the shader effects on the frost guys, it's not like there's anything to eat up resources in those scenes! maybe they'll add them before release?), but i am just used to the dual shock pad layout when it comes to these types of games. i dunno. we'll see!

Am Nintenho, DMC1 wasn't about combos.  That didn't happen until DMC3, which lets you get insane with combos, fighting game style.  I never played much of the game because I got my ass kicked by the first boss you encounter...like within the first five minutes of the game!   :lol  I need to go back and play it already, but there was just something that stopped me from doing so.  It can't be the difficulty alone because that didn't stop me from loving Godhand (Another game I need to finish!).

DMC1 was like a 3D Castlevania, only the protagonist actually had a personality.

imma download the demo when I get home, but does it let you play as Dante, or just Nero?

DMC4 bomba.  Capcom dumbed it down for pussy gamers.  DMC2 allllllll over again.  Production budgets are just too high for them to make something for hardcore people only.

Unfortunately, the Fancy Fightin' genre is the only genre of gaming where I like extreme difficulty.  Capbomba.

yeah, that b3d post confirms what i'm seeing. there's no significant difference in texture resolution, though there is a slight difference in filtering and the usual difference in contrast. the comparisons in which the 360 version appears much sharper are due to the ps3 version's motion blur -- they're taken when the camera is moving.
Title: Re: Devil May Cry 4 demo
Post by: MCD on January 25, 2008, 04:39:24 AM
hmm...strange if true.

also, what's up with the cut scenes? some gaffers say they are 30fps locked for the 360 and 30 to 60 for the ps3. (which is probably why TTP said ps3 version stutters)
Title: Re: Devil May Cry 4 demo
Post by: drohne on January 25, 2008, 04:52:55 AM
yeah, the cutscenes do sometimes hit 60 fps in the ps3 version. i think ttp was talking about that one pan over the burning cars, which does seem to stutter on ps3. i don't share his verdict that the 360 version runs better, tho -- i've seen a few instances of screen tearing

anyway, seems like the ps3 version is the one to get if you own both consoles, though really the differences are minute. it's one of the closest cross-platform comparisons i've seen

Tried it on both platforms; the differences are pretty minuscule so there's no reason to make a big deal out of which version you get.  I'm getting it on PS3 because the controller just feels better to me; guess I'm too used to DMC on PS2.

You know, I normally prefer motion blur but there's something about it in DMC4 that doesn't seem right.  It's not like Lost Planet's where it actually helped the game look better....this seems more cheap.  I really prefer the game without it.  And disregarding the still shots floating around the web, after flipping between the two version myself it was surprisingly pretty clear that the 360 game had better image quality.  I really didn't think it'd be noticible at all, but there it was.  The PS3 version also seemed to have a slight frame stutter a couple times in the demo that wasn't present in the 360 version.

That being said, the cinemas are running at half the framerate on the 360 and I do prefer the sixaxis (but I really miss the rumble on the 360 pad).

I really don't know what version I'll pick up though.

He seems like he's about as fast as Dante is in DMC3 when you aren't using Trickster, which is still considerably faster than Dante in DMC1.  I'm gonna guess that all changes anyway when you start gaining more abilities.  Same with his gun -- seems like a huge downgrade after Ebony & Ivory, but hopefully it's powered up fairly quickly.

I do like that added sprint ability.  Pretty much a necessity with a bulk of the areas being more open.

the latest from b3d, explaining the effect i mistook for motion blur:

The thing is, this trick only works for static scenes with a static camera, since it's stretching out the operation over several frames. Otherwise you tend to get a blurred mess.

Title: Re: Devil May Cry 4 demo
Post by: Smooth Groove on January 25, 2008, 04:09:30 PM
Temporal AA looks very good when it works properly.  It's hard to see the effect w/ static images but it makes everything look smoother in motion.  The only problem is that the framerate has to never dip below 60 for it to work properly, which is why it's a rarely used technique.
Title: Re: Devil May Cry 4 demo
Post by: drohne on January 25, 2008, 04:15:33 PM
this technique isn't the same as the temporal aa on ati video cards -- it's much simpler

i thought the 'motion blur' effect looked pretty cool when i was freezing my tv during camera pans -- it made these neat swirly patterns in textures! -- but i'll have to take a closer look at it tonight

my fondness for the hori pad is wholly consistent with my sony bias -- aside from its stick placement, it's closer in feel to sony's pads than microsoft's. and yeah, i wouldn't want to play dmc4 with the stock 360 pad's mushy face buttons, useless bumpers, and long-throw triggers :yuck

for the AA thing, apparently LP used some sort of "2.5D" motion blur to make it look like a 60 fps game.  iirc, the game also had the particle effects running at 1/4 the resolution so maybe that motion blur technique was very processor intensive?  Maybe they used a form of this for DMC4?

Try the Hori pad.  Drohne was singing its praises to divert attention from his Sony bias at GAF.

my fondness for the hori pad is wholly consistent with my sony bias -- aside from its stick placement, it's closer in feel to sony's pads than microsoft's. and yeah, i wouldn't want to play dmc4 with the stock 360 pad's mushy face buttons, useless bumpers, and long-throw triggers :yuck

hori pad :bow

I'll give a try even though the D-pad is the only thing I hate about the 360 controller. :)

Where can I find it?

Also, I remember that you have the Hori stick for the 360.  Would you recommend that too?  Is it similar to the one for the PS3?

not amazing but better than last gen

I like DMC4's balance of pretty graphics and performance.  Most of the top next-gen titles have nice visuals but I can barely stand their 30fps with fair amounts of slowdown and tearing.  More games need to go the 60fps route like Burnout and DMC4.

Btw, my observations are based on the PS3 version.  I'll check out the 360 demo later tonight.  Hopefully, the PC demo will be arriving soon.

the d-pad is the only really bad thing about the 360 controller, but its face buttons aren't responsive enough for a game like dmc, and its shoulder buttons are inappropriate. if i didn't have the hori pad, i'd go with the ps3 version, AA be damned. there are a bunch of them on ebay. you also might try japanvideogames.com, though i seem to have gotten their last one

and yeah, the 360 hori sticks are virtually identical to the basic hori ps3 sticks.

That's a major rip off by Hori then.  The Virtua Stick:High Grade sells for less than $60 in Japan.

i'm playing this with the analog stick, not the d-pad

yeah, i don't think you can play it with the d-pad -- the d-pad comments weren't in reference to dmc4

The new EX stuff is totally wrecking my shit. It adds a whole new dimension to the combo building.

Now I have to watch cancelling, rebounding, AND time my ex presses, and this is before I have to consider actually fighting the baddies.

lol so awesome

Drohe, does the japanvideogames store have better prices than they do online?  I just found out that it's only about a 30-45 minute drive for me.

I watched my friend play the demo today (360). I don't understand why people knock the graphics. I might actually buy it now.

Will RT ever serve any purpose in the full game, or is it cool to move lock-on to it?

Oh, also, how long is this game expected to be? I have 1 and 3 but never finished them.

I've never seen it at my local Fry's.  Fry has some crazy deals.  Once, they were clearing out the Tekken 5 game and joystick bundles at $40.  I wanted to punch myself for buying one a few months earlier for $100.

I just replayed the Beril fight knowing how to dodge and how to use the devil hand on him and that helped  a lot.  It was funner and got a little harder in the last 1/3 of his health.

what does all of this mean?  I'll consider getting this but I need to know how exactly you play (whether to simply beat the levels or to "grind" for points).

It's most likely going to be his Devil Trigger.

Nero can transform like Dante?

Not exactly, his arm makes a large demonic blue shadow behind him.

Think Blue Dragon or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

If you can read Dahbomb's post on GAF (the first one), I'd recommend it. EX presses are revving the sword at the right frames to fill up a lamp in the sword meter thing.
