I'm in a hurry here so forgive me for not posting full details. (need to go out and buy Fire Emblem Wii)
in short, better get one now if you want BC support.
-
I don't understand why they wouldn't keep this model for the higher margins.
I did expect them to remove BC from it though.
What a waste.
-
I don't care about the size of the HDD or PS2 BC, probably I'll end up getting the Gran Turismo 5 Bundle 40GB ( I hope ) with DS3 later this year, lulz.
also, Kaz Hirai said yesterday in an interview, that there will be no more price cut this year.
-
SONY BOMBA
SELL YOUR BC PS3s, IT'S ALL OVER
:bow power of xenos rules all :bow
-
This likely means that they're going to discount the 40GB at some point this year and hit the 360 hard.
-
That also means downloadable PS2 games sooner rather than later, I believe.
-
the 360 is overdue for another price drop. it would be smart to drop before GTA like someone in the other thread said.
-
PlayStation 2 Originals on PSN. Sony copies everything!
-
I've read that Sony has been working on a total BC software solution from the start, but that may have been (probably was) just a bullshit rumor
-
Still waiting for 199. Should be a nice pile of games to pick up along with it at that point.
-

Wait. What? New PS3? All your PS BS around here and you're just getting one?
-
Well, this sucks.
As a PS3 fan, this pisses me off.
-
just like i said at gaf i want a ps3 but it's like sony doesn't want me to buy one
-
I find meaning in my life by reveling in Sony's failures.
-
lol at the people complaining
ps3 been out for over 1 year and you have not bought one
this is why they had to what they did
so it's your own fault
hitler: yep! expect me to step it up now that i need to protect my invesment
-
What they need is 1 SKU with PS2 software BC as a PSN download.
-

:lol :lol
I really do like you :)
-
Still waiting for 199. Should be a nice pile of subpar 360 downports to pick up along with it at that point.
fixed for power of xenos :bow

I LUV MY BACKWARDS COMPAT PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
me too! 20gb forever!
-
20/60 GB owners 4 life
-
i've yet to find a compelling reason to upgrade my 20gb hdd.
-
like playing PS2 games on my PS3.
I also like the four USB ports, memory card ports, etc. Have an external hard drive hooked up to it too. Something a 40 GB PS3 owner can never do.
But ya know what? Sony didn't make this decision to please me. The reason they're failing in the market is because they didn't have the first clue who they were selling this console to.
The group of consumers that could propel the PS3 past the Xbox 360 at some point in the possibly make-believe future does not include individuals who care about playing old games.
Today's market isn't driven by backward compatibility. People aren't buying Wiis to play Gamecube games, or Xbox 360s to play Xbox games. At all.
They're buying PStwos to play PS2 games, and the PS3 has not provided enough added value on top of that backward compatibility to justify the price tag.
So Sony just drops it.
Frankly, I think you're being a bit unrealistic if you're waiting for some magical price point (what, $400? $300?) to buy a backward compatible console.
Either go to the store right now and get one, and you KNOW they're available, buy a PS2 (and you KNOW those are available), or shut up about it.
I bought a freaking PS2 in August of 2005 and it's still just as easy to get one today in 2008. Stop whining over something that's a non-issue.
You can play PS2 games, with a PS3 you can buy today. This is not for you. This is for price point perception.
:lol :lol :lol
-
what happens if my 60 GB ps3 ever gets shitbaked? are they gonna replace it with a 40 GB? that would suck
-
where's that quote from himu?
-
"sorry your good ps3 took a dump, here's a free Spider-Man 3 Blu Ray for your streamlined 40 GB replacement"
-
where's that quote from himu?

-
he's full of shit, though, 40 GB owners can hook up external hard drives and memory card readers
-
I'm going to have to get a used 60 GB model soon...
-
This is embarrassing.
-
I love that people who defend the PS3 BC drop always say 'if you want to play PS2/PSX games, buy a PS2'. They are completely ignoring the fact that it can't output a native HDTV resolution. A lot of gamers I know placed a good amount of value on the fact that BC can improve visuals and/or upscale to native HDTV resolution (neatly sidestepping a lot of the older game input vs. display lag issues). Not that I'm arguing everyone cares, but certainly some people do. Boy it's going to suck for little Timmy when his parents buy him a PS2 in two years to play on their brand new HDTV and he realizes that he has to press the jump button half a second before the edge of the pit or he's falling to his doom. :lol

Hm? You're the one who held off, Potato and I both have PS3s IIRC.
I don't see why they have to cut out the 80GB. They shouldn't be removing all BC options from consumers. There's really no reason why they couldn't have left the $15 PS2 chip in the 40GB either.
-
What about the recent stories that new SKU's are comming out like a white PS3?
-
LOL @ buy a PS2 in addition to a PS3.
The whole point of this damn issue is having BC, so that you wouldn't need two fucking consoles.
It's kinda funny how Sony was originally the one that pioneered this whole BC thing, and yet now they're the ones most intent on doing away with it.
-
ever since they introduced the 40gb in japan and europe sales have gone up. so its clearly working. quit the whining >:(

It's still fucking stupid.
-
distinguished mentally-challenged. But Sony overestimated their original strategy by trying to create a luxury game console. Which is funny since they were so successful with mass market pricing with the PS3's predecessors. Now to stop the bleeding they need to make sacrifices to their original design.

As a consumer, you should be offended. As a cheerleader in a pissing contest, I can understand why you're content with it.
-
40gb in japan
indeed - it's been an incredible turn around going from 20-30k a week average to 30-40k a week average.
Outstanding performance, and certainly outstripping expectations.
:bow

Why are Sony's concerns more important for discussion than my concerns?
Because Sony don't care about your concerns? Sony care about the majority and when you look at Europe, they seem to be buying 40GB's without BC so what's good for one is good for everyone.
.... ::)

Dude, I JUST read that like 10 seconds ago and was gonna post that here. :lol
Seriously, what the hell happened to not caring about what's good for the company and instead focusing on what's good for the consumer? ::) ::)
-
A year or so ago they were pointing the finger at Nfans for the same thing.
I like how his post makes this valid: "Looking at the 40Gb in the US, consumers don't really want it more than the 80GB and sales are still a joke."
Never mind wtf @ "what's good for one is good for everyone." No?
-
Isn't it pretty obvious that the 80 gig SKU is getting fazed out to make way for the dual shock 3 sku? Perhaps even a small price drop you get an 80 gig PS3 with a dual shock 3 instead of the sixaxis and NO moterstorm or bluray movie and it's 20$ less then before.
Idono, just my 2 cents.
-
So I don't own a PS3 but I want to get one at some point. What should I hope for in 2-3 months when I can buy one?
