It's really cheap. You can get an entire season for less than LXG.

How about Meet the Robinsons?  Although it's not quite up to Pixar standards, it's still pretty good.

Have you watched The Shooter?  It's a decent enough action flick that would look really good in HD.

Good news:  He didn't buy LXG.  He was going to buy the Aviator, but they were out.  His next instinct was to look for LXG.  Which was also sold out.

The bad news:  On the way out, I saw a cheap copy of

I could not justify buying it for anything but the special features, since I already own the movie in HD.  The HD-DVD though, has some coloring problems, and this DVD version uses the same transfer as the HD-DVD release, except the colors aren't crap.  And in true Criterion fashion, it has FUCK AWESOME special features:

Audio Commentary by Producer/Actor Kirk Douglas, Actor Peter Ustinov, Novelist Howard Fast, Producer Edward Lewis, Restoration Expert Robert A. Harris, and Designer Saul Bass
Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo's scene-by-scene analysis
Additional Alex North score compositions
Restoration demonstration
Disc Two:
Rare deleted scenes
Vintage newsreel footage
1960 promotional interviews with Jean Simmons and Peter Ustinov
1992 video interview with Peter Ustinov
Behind-the-scenes "gladitorial school" footage
The 1960 documentary The Hollywood Ten, plus archival documents about the blacklist
Original storyboards by Saul Bass
Hundreds of production stills, lobby cards, posters, print ads, and a comic book
Sketches by director Stanley Kubrick

Commentary from Kirk Douglass, Howard Fast (who wrote the novel the movie is based on), and a scene by scene commentary by Dalton Trumbo?  COMMIES COMMIES EVERYWHERE!

BONER ACADEMY.  Anyway, MAF bought me the Spartacus that I had difficulty justifying. But in return, I must buy him. . .

I don't understand how I could be so straight and masculine yet own two copies of Spartacus.  I think that maybe imagining Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis having sweaty mansex is like testing my heterosexuality, and since I always come out of those thoughts perfectly straight and normal, the test only strengthens my firm, firm heterosexuality.

I'm a typical horny straight male and I like Spartacus.  It's so much better than Gladiator.  I want to punch people in the face whenever they talk about how Gladiator was like nothing they've seen before.

I haven't gotten Spartacus in HD yet.  Is it on both formats?

HD-DVD only :(

If it's any consolation, the picture on the Criterion DVD is supposed to look nearly identical.  They both come from the same transfer (from 1991--ancient), and they fucked with the colors in the BAD way on the HD-DVD version. The HD-DVD version also has NO EXTRAS on it.  At all.

It's the only HD Kubrick release not on both formats :(  But it's not a very good release, so no biggie.

I saw Gladiator in theaters when I was 13. It was beyond awesome.

I still haven't seen Spartacus.  :-\

i really dislike gladiator for a number of reasons.

I haven't seen it since it came out in.  I enjoyed it walking out of the theatre, but it was just enjoyment.  It was an entertaining movie, that's it.  It looked nice, but the dialogue and the long dreamy shots indicated that the movie aspired to be heavier than it ended up being.  So I liked it.  It was worth the cost of admission.  I would probably buy it in HD.

The resentment came when it won awards.  WTF?

Of the nominees for that year, I would probably say that Traffic was the best picture, although I am not particularly a lover of that (why get the movie when you can see the superior British miniseries?).

the effects were bad (the pan overs of rome?  ugh)

it trying to downplay violence as spectacle by...errr...using violence as spectacle,

it thought it was more than it was (pretense!)

the acting was sketchy as was the casting

the score was good, russel crowe did a pretty good interpretation of russel crowe, and it was never boring

but really it makes me sad that people will watch that and think they have an idea of spectacle while never ever watching El Cid, or even a Cecil B. Demile film, much less Ben Hur or Spartacus.

You see, I saw a clip of it or something on a Best Buy monitor or something fairly recently, and the first thing I thought was "man, CG dates really quickly."  I remembered that movie looking at least passable, if not downright impressive, when it came out.  But now, not so much.

I can forgive Ridley because both Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven are pretty damned great.

i'll agree with you on black hawk down  didn't see kingdom of heaven (it's in my queue.  director's cut and what not), but I haven't seen gladiator since it came out and i just remember shaking my head throughout the whole thing.

Unrelated, but since MAF shared his embarassing desire to purchase LXG and I shared the embarassing fact that I must purchase LXG, I will take this time to say that Steve McQueen was pretty damned attractive.

Note to people that do not know anything that happened before like 2000 (ie. the people clueless about John Romero):  Steve McQueen is NOT the chick in this picture.

If you don't have them already:

Evil Dead 2
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Robocop
2001

Watching old films in Blu-Ray is like watching them for the first time all over again (the transfer on 2001 is sick).
