I am having a really good time with KOF XI, and I would really like to try some other games in the series. What do you guys consider to be the best titles in the series? Nothing too obscure, because I at least would like to play them on my PSP via MVSPSP. :)

98 and 2002

I am going to go with those. They're "Dream Match" titles, correct? Probably the wisest choices. :D

Oh sorry, I misread the question.

Those are indeed the best two choices. '98 is the overall best "classic" game in the series, and it's even getting a new version, KOF '98 Ultimate Match, in arcades and on PS2 soon to celebrate its 10th anniversary. :hyper
XI is the best of the KOF games since '99, 2002 aside, easily. KOF '99-2001 are the worst in the series IMO. Neowave (on PS2 Japan and Xbox) is also prety cool, although it really is nothing more than a changed-up 2002 with some game play options added.

JESUS FUCK GO PLAY IT NOW! :o :o :o
I'm always playing:
-KOF '98 (in preparation for Ultimate)
-KOF XI (cuz it rocks!)
-KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A (3D KOF goodness)
-KOF 2002 (some arcades around here have it and I like to go and kick that ass when people play it)
I finally got Neowave for Xbox recently, but no one ever plays it online. :'( Plus it's missing May Lee and Angel from the PS2 version.

oh wait
i do have a really powerful PC
maybe i could get that hot ps2 emulator all the kids are wild for and buy a copy
-
Hmm but is that emulator good enough yet to run a PS2 game at full speed? You'd really feel missing frames and slowdown in a fighting game.
-
dunno
i'll pull it down and give it a test

2002 is so friggin' good. :D

2002 is amazing

my personal favorite is '97 because of the tone of the game, but the soundtrack is kind of silly sometimes with background noise instead of music. i still like it but most hate that.
the best KOF game is probably '98 though, and with the new one coming out you will be able to play the shit out of it.
2002 was kind of crappy as far as i'm concerned. i liked 2000 a lot, but i wouldn't recommend it.
-
yeah, i started playing lots of last blade instead of 2000 and i think that was where i made my "break" from the KOF series
-
It's really too bad that Regulation A isn't coming outside of Japan. It's so fucking fun to play.

'98 :bow

How so? The only thing it had going against it was that it was really nothing new, but it was basically KOF '98 "2." And then Neowave was "KOF 2002 Champion Edition." :)

I still need to buy Neowave.

2002 was kind of empty and boring especially when it was a rehash of 2001 and 98 with nothing special or interesting about it. technically if you wanted to play the game you could play either one, but 2001 had the meanest, cheapest KOF boss ever and '98 was just a 4 year benchmark masterpiece from the first story arc. especially when compared to 2003 with the new tagging system, there was no reason to ever play it again. i guess it means that it wasn't a good game because it got stuck between a bunch of better games that made it out to be what it really was: a rehash of a game from 4 years before.
