Title: I got a rather unorthodox pet.
Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 27, 2008, 04:51:47 PM
Maybe it was because I brought up this (http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=16924.msg408572#msg408572) yesterday.  Maybe it was because although I have enjoyed living on my own immensely, I wanted some kind of furry companion.  Housing-wise and emotionally, taking in a kitten would be too difficult for me right now.  So for whatever reason, when I was browsing Petco with CrystalGemini yesterday, I decided I was going to adopt a chinchilla.

I've always dug chinchillas - they've got the temperament and social nature of a fancy rat, but the cuteness and aesthetic appeal of a rabbit.  They can live upwards to 20 years.  It wasn't until I got him home that I realized how social chinchillas really are.  They're energetic and fun, but they communicate.  Mine chirps and squeaks, bolts around and lays near my feet when tired.  He likes to crawl up my arms and goof around.  I like raisins, he likes raisins.

Ladies and gents, I introduce you to... Ash!

See now why can't you get a pet like this, Patel? Chicks loves Chinchillas, not nasty chinese dogs

they're both hairless and have that cha cha cha sound

I also concur that women love chinchillas.  I had no less than four attractive women stop by to see him in a span of 24 hours.  They friggin' love chinchillas.

I've heard mixed things about that, Spencer.  To tell you the truth, mine seems a lot happier and mellow separated from the group he was amongst in Petco.  We'll see how he reacts once he's acclimated to the apartment.

Eh, I tend to avoid pets you can't interact with and die quickly.  Chinchillas are great because they're not self-centered like rabbits (finding a social rabbit is a crapshoot) and not disgusting, nor die quickly like fancy rats.  I totally underestimated their intelligence too.

why did you name him after your favorite Pokemon trainer
Title: Re: I got a rather unorthodox pet.
Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 27, 2008, 05:05:48 PM
No homo.

I named him for two reasons - after the greatest movie hero of all-time (Ashley J. Williams!), and because chinchillas are native to volcanic habitats and bath in fine volcanic ash to clean themselves.  In fact, you just put this special "dust" in a container and they clean themselves.  It's awesome.

chinchillas rock :) my cousins had one when i was younger, and we used to play with him for hours. we'd get old shoe boxes and make him a "hotel" to play in.

I know I probably don't need to say this, but, well, I know you, Willco:  unlike cats, chinchillas aren't really fuckin pets, so you might want to invest in a second pet that more fits your needs.  I suggest a either a koala bear (their mannerisms are so human.  note: beware the biting.  And clawing), or some sort of large snake (no no, not to stick in your ass, to plug in the cloaca).  Make sure that if you go the snake route, it is a chick snake, or else it might be kinda gay.

I would like a penguin

sadly they need a cold environment

I saw a family on tv with one, they cut a doggy door out of a freezer they owned and fed him fresh fish at a nearby market, both unavailable to me

They're so awesome.  You can put them inside of this ball and they'll roll themselves around.  They get you really dirty if you hold them after they bathe/dust themselves though.  Nice petting animals though because of social attitude and soft fur.

consider a ferret?

Title: Re: I got a rather unorthodox pet.
Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 27, 2008, 06:08:49 PM
Ferrets are too high maintenance.  Even if you remove their glands, they still smell.  Plus, they have a huge amount of possible medical problems - costly medical problems - that can occur during ownership.  If you're not personally paying for one or spending them time to treat it once or twice a week to minimize odor, I can see them being neat pets.  Plus, they steal your stuff and hide it.

It's a neat pet for rich people, basically.
Title: Re: I got a rather unorthodox pet.
Post by: abrader on January 27, 2008, 06:16:14 PM
I C - I never had them myself for long - just once when I was a kid and they stayed in a large kennel on the patio....they did have that odor like a deglanded skunk....

Im just a cat guy myself.

I yearn for the potential of a penguin one day.

I had a larger jungle cat once - it was a bother tho and ALOT of work.

Chinchillas are so cute! This is the best thread ever, Willco. Is yours a nipper? Sometimes they are but if you're patient you can break them of the habit.

You should take a bunch of pictures of him taking a dust bath!!

LOVE chinchillas.

I got him to eat raisins out of my hand today.  And he took his first dust bath - it was the most awesome thing ever.  He still darts away when you try and pick him up, but like I said earlier, once you have him handled... he's calm.  He actually sat on my shoulder for ten minutes while I was browsing the 'bore.

Those are fun pets Willco! We used to have one but he developed some issues with his teeth. The teeth never stop growing like with most rodents. He stopped grinding them down and they started to curve back down into his jaw. Eventually we had to put him to sleep.

I had a ferret a long time ago. His name was Zippidy and he was pretty freaking cool. He smelled, though. Even when they're descented, ferrets stink. They have a stink about them. Then again, some people say the same thing of cats.

We had a major breakthrough tonight - he went into his cage... on his own!

Earlier, he got stressed and a clump of hair fell out.  He even nipped me.  After I calmed him down, he was fine and even crawled on top of my head and ate a raisin out of my hand.  He is still get used to his new home.  But to get him into his cage without chasing - wow!

Update.  Ash is becoming less and less shy in his cage.  He used to kind of sit in his timberwood hideaway box in fear, I think, but he's rarely in it when I'm around.  He will actually voluntarily climb into my palm to get out of his cage.  If I lay down, he'll crawl all over me.

Last night, he got less time out his cage than usual and protested once he was put back in by sitting on top of his house and pouting.  When I went to bed (a bit earlier than normal), it was the first night when he made a total racket.  At one point, he made a loud series of noises that sounded like this (http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/sounds/u1_adpcm.wav) that I was kind of disturbed about - until I read about them this morning.  Apparently, that's the noise a chinchilla makes when he wants to communicate that he is lonely or looking for his buddy.

I guess we're buddies now.
