Xbox 360 Core or Arcade users are left playing the offline versions of Criterion's excellent racer.
Burnout Paradise has impressed gamers since its release last week, but the Xbox 360 version isn't the same for everyone. Reports from gamers suggested that the game needs a hard drive for online play, meaning owners of Core and Arcade Xbox 360s can't play the game online.
Having been totally unaware of this, we hunted down our retail 360 copy of the game to look at what was said on the case. After close inspection we finally saw the text.
"Online multiplayer 2-8/hard drive required" read the orange text on the second line of the game information on the rear of the case.
A user on Maxconsole.net contacted EA support and received the following reply via email:
"The hard drive is needed to store temporary data when playing online as the data transferred from one console to another requires storage space greater than what the memory card can contain."
We're waiting for an official response from EA on the matter, but let us know what you think about the need for a hard drive in the comments below.

Wow, I didn't catch this. Sucks for those who don't have a HDD on 360.
I'm just going to buy the PS3 version so I don't have to worry. ;)
-
I'll never understand why Microsoft didn't put a hard drive on every machine. Problems like this are only going to become more common as this generation goes on, and developers really try and push these steaming engines further.
The PS3 version is better anyway, so it's the first option if you own a PS3 already.

wy would you NOT buy a 360 w/ a hard drive

360 Burnout = custom soundtracks
PS3 Burnout = girlfriend and emo pouty boy music
PS3 Burnout = LEGENDARY FAIL
-
PS3 can do soundtracks easily. Just play High Velocity Bowling and Super Stardust HD. Just take a look at my HVB bowling image:
Custom soundtracks across all games are coming this year anyway.
And according to 1UP, PS3 version is superior:
But which platform offers the consummate version of Paradise? While the PlayStation 3 edition sports a slight visual edge (a few superior textures, no screen tearing) and arguably superior controller triggers, the Xbox 360 offering plays identically, and both sport that amazingly intuitive online interface. And since the PS3 version fails to deliver a custom soundtrack option (blame Sony), the Xbox 360's ability to rescue you from a cavalcade of crappy Burnout 2 track remixes and Avril Lavigne nonsense can't be underestimated.

Criterion :bow
Forget non-pro/elite owners. They're screwing SSF2T:HD out of many 1080p graphics.

Wow, the knowledge that PS3 games are getting custom soundtracks at some vague and undetermined point this year totally blows a hole in the fact that people playing it right now are getting aurally tortured.
And according to everyone else on the planet that isn't Shane Bettenhausen, both versions are exactly the same. But hey, enjoy girlfriend for the 10,000th time. You have arguably superior triggers lol
*was going to buy the PS3 version until I found out about the shithouse no custom soundtracks deal
-
how the hell did they get a game like this to look as good on the PS3 as it does on the X360? massive achievement for thier 150+ lead dev team to match their 8 man X360 port team. Unbelievable effort and surely this means that all games will be PS3 as lead.
Wow, I didn't realize the system warz bullshit was this strong on this board. I guess I just don't read or post here enough to know yet. :-\
So how about someone just update me right now. Does this board lean heavily towards the 360 or what?
-
I dont think I could play burnout without custom soundtracks...
EA radio/ EA BIG/ EA TRAX etc always suck bad.
-
So how about someone just update me right now. Does this board lean heavily towards the 360 or what?
Yeah. Almost everyone here owns one.
-
No, that's just honesty and the ability to speak freely without fear of some arbitrary ban or some cockface mod tag that you're experiencing. You may be unaccustomed to that if you're a GAF regular.
-
No, I love honesty and no holds barred opinions. I own a 360/PS3/Wii, so I'm down with whatever. I'm just seeing a lot of heavy opinions mixed with a lot of 360 rulz PS3 sucks type of talk, where the facts begin to get fuzzy.
For instance, those in this thread arguing the PS3 and 360 versions of Paradise look and run "the same". They don't. Yeah, I'm insane, but I own the game on both consoles and I can tell you exactly how they're different, and the PS3 version does run and look a tad better.
I posted some comments in the Burnout thread yesterday. If you've got any doubts my 360 gamertag is "Tigerriott". Just in case someone wants to pull that card on me. ;)
-
I dunno, man, when I played the demo on both systems it hung in the same places on both systems.
The 360 version runs 99% smooth to me, only the occasional split-second of lag (which has never affected a race). But, Van Halen and Panama trumps Lipstick Boys and whatever the hell they're whining about, pretty much every time.

if you really don't get it, you are on the wrong board.
it's as simple as that.
For instance, those in this thread arguing the PS3 and 360 versions of Paradise look and run "the same". They don't. Yeah, I'm insane, but I own the game on both consoles and I can tell you exactly how they're different, and the PS3 version does run and look a tad better.
hand on heart, tell me if that tad better is in any way significant or whether it would negate custom soundtracks and the fact that people in this immediate community own X360's in larger numbers than PS3's , hence making X360 online more attractive?
WITHOUT SPITTING THE DUMMY OUT, tell me objectively why "a tad better" would mean i should chose the PS3 version over the X360 version or , if you submit, why it's such a total irrelevancy ?
You speak in your own tongues that I don't quite understand at all times. But here goes.
Of course like any discussion on such topics, some things are gonna come down to personal opinion. It's not personal opinion however that the PS3 version of Paradise runs smoother and has an extra touch of polish overall when compared to the 360 version.
For instance, the PS3 version runs incredibly smooth except for the most rare of occasions. Such as a huge pileup in front of you in a race going at full speed. I've also seen one or two instances where the game engine just wheezes for a split second while moving through the heavy downtown area. Like I've literally seen that once or twice in 35 hours of gameplay.
On the 360 however, that split second wheezing occurs semi regularly in the downtown areas. It's not a framerate change, but rather a momentary slow-mo moment that occurs where the engine seems to be trying to catch up. It doesn't bother me much, but to a graphics whore that kind of thing could be deemed "terrible".
Also, on the 360 version the very distant road ahead will often be visible poping in a bit more than it does on the PS3 version. On the PS3 you might see a few objects pop in off in the distance, but on the 360 it seems a bit more pronounced with the road ahead sort of morphing into view at times. Again, this is noticable under careful examination, and most people won't care. I'm just going over the details for those who do, as I'm giving an honest assessment of the two versions since I was asked.
There are also a few instances where the camera on the 360 version gets momentarily janky. For some reason after some crashes the camera slips back to the car and the camera has a split second spazz moment, and I've never seen this occur on the PS3 version. The same goes for after a races or events, where the camera slows down and zooms in on the car. On the 360 the camera will sometimes get lost, or out of place while this is happening. I would put those under the "polish" category.
I think there are some minor lighting, texture, and aliasing issues that seem noticable as well, but those fall under the very difficult to pinpoint category, and thus are mostly not worth mentioning. Overall though, the game runs plain better on the PS3. It's that simple.
As for custom soundtracks, controller preference, and all that jazz, that is compeltely personal opinion and thus I won't debate it. It's stupid to bother. Graphics whores will want the PS3 version, all others will make up their mind based on other things. Neither version of the game is bad, and I would have have never even bothered buying the 360 version as well if it didn't run and look nearly as good as the PS3 version.
But really Charlie, you need to take a chill pill with the system warz stuff. You seem a touch jumpy about it, and I'm not sure if this is normal or you're just having a bad day. :P I'm sure the 360 version had more than 8 people working on it, and we all know thats how ports of multiplatform games work anyway. A much smaller group usually handles the "other version" of a game like this. I'm sure the 360 version of Paradise was no different.
-
I dont know a single person with a 360 that doesnt have a fucking hard drive.
Also, Tiger is full of shit! muhaha
-
Who the fuck owns a ps3 that doesnt regret it? distinguished mentally-challenged fellows lol

Yeah, I just took a lot of time and made up a bunch of shit about comparing the two versions. I even hate the 360 SO MUCH that I bought the 360 version just so I could shit on it that much. Yeah, I really hate teh 360. ::)

actually, the difference with Burnout Paradise was the excess of staff working on the lead version , not the size of the port team! ;)
think PS3 will be lead again ? (actually that is a trick question... hahaha...)
But anyways, i don't think i'm being unduly unfair - the graphical differences are so slight that i simply don't see them outweighing the pro's that the X360 version brings to the table. I've had some time with the final Ps3 version and a fair amount of time comparing the demo versions before i picked up the Asian version on X360. If anything i thought the IQ on the X360 was a tad better, i had way less glitching on the PS3 version than i did on the X360 version, but it simply wasn't enough to warrant buying over the X360 where all the friends i have actually own an X360 , where as only 3 or so have a PS3. + controller preference + achievements + custom soundtracks then it's just not enough.
Not really into the console graphic whorism really - graphic whorism on consoles died the second i bought a PC. *shrug*
intellectual discussion
1) admittance
2) acceptance
3) recovery.
All you have to admit is you were wrong about the PS3 and it'll all get better! ;)
I'm not arguing the PS3 version is the only version worth getting though. Thats where you're getting it all wrong. If I could only have one version of the game, it would be the PS3 version, but thats only because I am a bit of a graphic whore and it bugs me if I don't have the best looking version of a game. Not to mention I've never really been big on custom soundtracks and I've used them on my 360 a handful of times in the past 2 years. Oh yeah, and the PS3 version does have achievements in the game. In fact, it has 10 more than the 360 version.
As I already stated in my previous reply. If someone only owned a 360 this game is still an absolute must buy.

Or just don't be among the 5% of people who don't have a hard drive?
You're a real one trick pony today.
edit: As for 360 fandom, I'd say this board has a higher percentage of dual-HD console owners than any other community I've seen. There's nothing surprising about hardcore gamers who have had a 360 for 2 years already being less than impressed with the PS3 sitting next to it waiting to be fed a movie.

Be careful, guys. Mana Knight might report this board to Sony.

How is it personal opinion that one version has custom soundtracks and the other one doesn't? I'll probably get the PS3 version since I"m a graphics whore that care about the tiniest differences. My preference for better graphics isn't any less of a "personal opinion" than someone who wants to have custom soundtracks.

Damnit, smooth, you beat me to that joke.

When this forum gets bought out by CNET, all of you guys are fired.

What I meant was that the graphic differences were not up for debate. They are real and those who try and deny them are just kidding themselves.
-
You must not use your PS3 for much if you're very concerned about those differences.

???
I use my PS3 a lot like I use my 360, to play games. Only difference really being that I get to watch bluray movies and occasionally surf the web on my PS3. Other than that, not much difference.
Edit: It's really kinda hilarious that you had to make such a comment the more I think about it. While people pick apart PS3 ports like they're combing for ancient fossils in a desert, suddenly it's pathetic for people to examine the differences when the 360 is on the losing end of the comparison. :lol
