People don't like SF3, outside of the hardcore market.
Yup, parrying was just too difficult for most mainstream gamers. The charmless new characters didn't help either

All they had to do was make a HD version on SF3 with a few new people and environments. Fucking Capcom.
That wouldn´t have been SF4. That would have been an update to SF3.

I doubt the parrying had much to do with it. It isn't like people who couldn't do V-ism or alpha counters avoided SFA3. I think that's giving a singular feature a bit too much weight. Atmosphere was the primary culprit. Other than the inclusion of old favorites Ken and Ryu (and later, a few others), it hardly looks or feels at all like a Street Fighter sequel.

I don't like fighters much and have never played SF3 but sign me up as an SF3 fanboy out of general principle! I always hate it when some part of a series arbitrarily gets the status of The Only One That Matters in the eyes of the general public due to stupid zeitgeisty reasons. see also: Final Fantasy 7, Secret of Mana. Therefore SF2 sux, SF3 rulz.

Yeah, pressing "forward" on the d-pad or joystick is really tough. If people can manipulate 2 analog sticks with ease (like in all these FPSes that are so popular with casuals), surely they can learn how to parry or even do a hadouken.

Obviously it's the timing that's difficult. I think the SF4 dev mentioned that's why they won't have parrying in SF4.

Easy cochise, the difficulty of fighting games comes from timing. I won thousands of races in PGR 2 online, and it wasn't my expertise in using the controller that won them all; it was the knowledge of mechanics, skill, and practice that garnered most of those wins.
