Title: This just in - Burnout Paradise is the best game of the year, so far!
Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 01, 2008, 01:28:54 AM: I nabbed a copy of Turok to play with (I probably won't buy it), but I got play Burnout Paradise for a prolonged period of time today - it rocks my butt off. A friend from EA is getting me a copy for cheap, but I'd probably buy it at full price. Totally awesome game.

The demo was alright and the buzz from the manager's conference was that the final game was going to BLOW YOU AWAY, but not really. It's not bad, but I'm not going to pay for it. Oh well, Burnout and Condemned will keep me occupied 'till Lost Oddysey and Condemned 2 roll around.

Turok is so average, I might not even play it on my 360 for a few achievements.

Forza and Burnout are nothing alike. Revenge is a different breed of Burnout, but pretty great. I really dig Paradise for what it is, though. I spent the past thirty minutes trying to make this fucking super jump. :lol

I cannot believe how much people allow a stupid DJ to ruin a game for them. ::) The dude talks like 5 minutes in the first 30 minutes of the game. After that you barely hear from him.

I file that shit under the exact same lunatic category as the people who insist on wanting to change the controls for every game they buy. As if they've always got a "better" way for the controller layout to be handled. ::) The DJ is an informative tutorial given in a cool and smart way. It's not like he calls your phone and wants to talk about the news of the day.

It's just always been a pet peeve of mine when I see people whining about it. As if they've always got this special best way to control a game, and if only the developer would let them just change it, the game would be perfect.

The DJ complaining falls under the same category for me. If people actually listened to what the guy is telling them they might actually get to understand just how much shit there is to do in this game. Instead they're too busy complaining about all that horrible information he gives them.

if you make a wrong turn or get bumped into a side road you may as well cancel out the race, even if you're halfway there, so that bullshit about "choose your own route" turned out to be...well, bullshit, and half-running races over and over is just a colossal waste of your time

and once you get to a certain scoring level on stunt runs you pretty much have to be in a perfect set of circumstances to top it

Even if you miss an optimal turn it will still signal at turns to try and get you back on track. Its saved my ass more than once when ive missed a turn on a shortcut.

i'm starting to agree with the people who say no restart was a bad design decision

As for no restart - I can kind of understand the frustration, but just move on to another race. It's not like you must do SAID RACE to get SAID ADVANCEMENT. Any number of wins will increase your license. If you fuck up one race, try another.

Theres so much shit to do that the Demo doesn't allow you to touch. Mainly all the missions. The Paradise City feels barren when everything is locked and your just joy riding around.

Plus being able to get the upgraded cars is such a big hook

There's nothing WRONG with avoiding it; playing it knowing you'll probably hate most of how the gameplay works is not a good idea.

Not sure about the location question but Events seem to clear every time you upgrade your license. So all the events you already did get renewed (with harder requirements) with the next license. If your still working on upgrading and you want to know which ones you've cleared, the Map should show a little check mark under the icon (both the Mini Map and the larger map).

I was high on this game initially, but I chalk that up to being drunk and happy due to Valentine's Day not being totally awful. When I played today, I couldn't help but thinking most of the things I complained about with the demo are still there. I suck at boycotting things. Whatever, I only paid $1.06 for it.

Anyway, it's still fun because it's still BURNOUT when you're racing/road raging, but I still miss turns often, and having to look at the mini-map all the time is annoying as hell.

And I guess I'll just quote this..

It's definitely a fun game, and I've come to grips with the fact that they wanted to "next-gen" the series, and I can respect that. I do like chasing after and SHUTTING DOWN cars after they drive by me in the open-world. Hopefully, they'll think of more and better ways to take advantage of the open-world model the second time around.

So far! I mean, I'm sure better games will come out for these consoles but I haven't had more fun with a game up till now. I'll probably replace Burnout with GTA4 when it finally goes come out but Burnout Paradise is a blast

I picked this up yesterday, played it for about 5 hours, got my C-license and found about half of all the collectables (SuperJumps, Billboards, and Smashes), and so far I've enjoyed it. I wasn't sure if I would because of how much they'd changed it, but change isn't always bad. I'm not getting rid of my Burnout Revenge 360 after playing this that's for sure, but this is a nice installment to the series too. I miss Crash Mode and the relentless traffic checking of Revenge, but open-world Takedown Mode, Marked Man, and Stunt Mode were all good. Racing is kinda meh.

One thing kind of disturbs me about Burnout Paradise though. It made me feel like the people in Crash, like I was watching car crash pornography. I mean, I played Burnout games before, but this was the first time I picked up a vaguely erotic vibe to it. The way the cars slowly crumple together in super slow-motion, parts slowly warping and melding together in full 1080p like some kind of perverse automotive mating ritual, before finally climaxing in an ejaculation of glass and metal. It's like they're expecting me to pull down my pants and start jacking it. :-\ Between this and the self-proclaimed Gun-Porn of Black, with it's loving-crafted weapons, portrayed with more polygons than probably everything else on the screen at the same time, I've come to the conclusion that the people at Criterion are really fucked up sexually.

New crash mode is mildly entertaining in it's own way, but it sucks compared to old crash mode.
