I think you'll see another spike in sales - this is the first time in over a year that I'm selling the system at a good clip. Still can't keep the 360 in stock. I dunno if there's a production or GameStop-centric ordering and replenishment problem, or what. But people are really gobbling up PS3s. Called around (plus my neighbor is another SM) and it's pretty much the same here district wide. Dunno about nationally.

Well, GameStop had a raincheck program in place for the Wii systems 'till the 25th of January, so all Wii systems we were going in were going straight to the rainchecks and were not for public sale. We get an allotment of 6 to 18 Wii units per week and they just sell out like nuts. Can't keep 'em in stock.
Real talk: Nintendo sends out more Wii units than Microsoft does Premium, Arcade or Elite SKUs.
-
I'd be really interested to see some global retail data. On a purely microscopic level - one GameStop district, I'd wager that we've sold more PS3 units in January on the basis of Xbox 360 product unavailability alone.
Coupled with the recent shift in the format war to BD and several major retailers offering no interest on HDTV purchases for 12+ months, the PS3 has become a hot item.

What about software?
-
Neither one have been pushing a ton of software out the door. We obviously sold more copies of Burnout Paradise and Turok for the 360, but it wasn't a huge gap. That said, our store skews to a PS3 market, so it's really hard to say whether or not anecodtal evidence will be accurate to NPD data. Whereas hardware units are easier to get a count from store-to-store and are far more telling when the NPD stuff is released.
I really do feel like on a grass roots level, that the PS3 is starting to get some traction with gamers and momentum to boot. A lot of folks are seeing an affordable Blu-Ray player with some big titles on the horizon - like Metal Gear Solid 4 and GT5 Prologue and Killzone 2. Whereas the 360 is still fighting an image problem due to the RROD and there is little in the way to look forward to in 2008... yet.
-
Turok is selling well then?
-
It's selling meh. The pre-order pickup percentage is pretty low. It's not what I'd call an impact title. It, like the PS3, might owe a lot of its sales due to product unavailability or lack of product whatsoever. There's really nothing out there for the hardcore and shooter market - they've been playing Call of Duty 4 for months. The next impact title will honestly be Devil May Cry 4. I expect that to sell huge.
-
Willco, how do you expect Lost Odyssey to sell?
-
How much is the trade-in value for a premium 360? I better do the deal while a 360's still worth something.
-
People are buying Bluray Players amirite lol
-
probably for DMC4.

Not a ton on a company level, but I've got a bunch of pre-orders in my store. I've really made it my key title for the month and because I'm excited about it, my staff is excited about it (I've got like five staff members who also pre-ordered it), so our base is excited about it. Microsoft is putting some marketing money into the title - all GameStop stores got standees and it's apart of our PowerTrade offers, which usually is extended only for huge, impact games (GTA, Halo, Smash Bros., etc.) and sports titles.

I don't know offhand. Somewhere in the ballpark of like $150. We sell the wired ones for like $199, so it can't be too much.

It is most definitely a big reason for a lot of the purchases; the Blu-Ray effect is starting to really hit folks. Microsoft needs to hurry up and restock retailers, announce some of their "secret" titles and a formal launch announcement for their Blu-Ray addon. It will really lose some momentum if any of Sony's first-party titles pan out.
probably for DMC4.
Eh, not really. As the case with almost all multiplatform titles - there are more reserves for the 360 version than the PS3 version.

Sony cannot make a comeback

I bought one in January. I don't have a single game for it yet. :)

it's pretty interesting to hear from inside a store how systems are moving and it's a surprise that ps3 is gaining momentum. i'd love to see it finally get off the ground, get more titles, and generate enough interest that gamers (not casual) have a library to purchase and play with it rather than 3 titles. so far ps3 hasn't had much to offer.
the 360 has been a gem for me especially with the live arcade and all the great games that are on it. unfortunately those are running dry as i don't see any interesting games coming out for it with the exception of bionic commando. couple that with little to look forward to this year in games besides lost odyssey - which is currently in the mail - and microsoft will start to lose speed soon enough.
personally i think that's great because this year is an enormous year for me and i have so much more to do than play games and spend money on software/hardware. that means i can look forward to taking care of my backlog and enjoying the prices of cheap older games should something come up. besides i have no interest in having a bluray player at this time, nor an SACD player (does anyone that has a ps3 now know or care about that?), so there is nothing in it for me. maybe in 2009 or 2010 when the price is reasonable and i have a fantastic job with tons of money to blow.

blurays arent games, the sky is falling Willco

yeah, got one as a gift in october but all i have is the 2 games that came with it: motorstorm and formula one. mehhhhhh. not really my cup of tea. i haven't even played formula one once.
gonna get uncharted soon, after we're finished our gigantic game backlog.

No, they're not games, but in the same breath, I don't think it'd something I'd brush off. I was accurate about the sales spike from the 40GB models.
-
yes but it had no effect on SOFTWARE sales
-
I didn't say it did! I even said I have no clue about software sales now, but to expect a hardware spike. Geez, don't get your panties in a bunch!
Nobody is saying WELL THAT ABOUT WRAPS IT UP FOR MICROSOFT, but I do think the House that Gates Built lacks that killer instinct in terms of its competition. If the situation was reversed, Sony would've delivered a killing blow to Microsoft an entire quarter ago. I really think Microsoft has kind of let them hang in this thing.

knowing nintendo, there better be a (all around) decent PS4 so this is good news.
hopefully XBL gets a price cut or an upgrade sometime soon as PSN starts to get better.
