Culdcept Saga is the latest entrant in the popular Magic-meets-Monopoly game franchise that had previous installments on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. Developed exclusively for the Xbox 360, this title is the first in the series to incorporate the advanced online matchmaking features of Xbox Live. While the plot is purely peripheral to the gameplay, the game's story concerns a powerful queen and a young boy who must fight to bring peace to their land. The boy, a Cepter who can control magical cards, must defeat adversaries to free the land from tyranny.

As in Monopoly, players in Culdcept Saga roll dice and move around a game board, attempting to claim spaces and assess fees against other Cepters who land there. Unlike Monopoly, squares are claimed by summoning creatures to guard them, and players who land on them can opt to challenge this creature with one of their own rather than pay the toll. If successful, the challenger claims ownership of the square. The winner of the game is the first player to return to the starting location after amassing a sufficient quantity of magic/mana.

Creatures are summoned from customized decks ("books") of cards which players design ahead of time from an available pool of cards. Other cards in these decks bestow items to enhance creature abilities, or represent spells which can influence movement on the game board. Although there are nearly 500 different cards in total, players must earn many of these through skillful play and story mode progression before they can be used.

Although the game relies somewhat heavily on luck, players do have a choice over what cards make up their decks, as well as when to play those cards. The squares in the game consist of different terrain or elemental types (e.g. fire, water, etc.), and the abilities of various creatures can be bolstered by deploying them on an appropriate square. Some more powerful creatures can only be summoned when a certain number of squares of a given terrain type are already controlled, so balance is required when designing a deck. Players must also decide when to upgrade the squares which they currently control. Upgraded squares exact higher magic toll rates than non-upgraded squares when opponents land there.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 05, 2008, 05:11:51 AM
I wanted to make Culdcept Saga our very first Game of the Month title, which will be picked on my discretion based on anticipation from the community in an effort to find titles that we can all eventually converse about (in a civilized fashion) and play together.

Considering this title will retail for $39.99, I urge all our Xbox 360 owners that might be intrigued by this kind of release to pick it up.  The game looks sexcellent and will provide us many hours of entertainment for minimal dollars!

My personal close runner-up, Lost Odyssey, won't be too far behind in my thoughts.

This game is only possible on the Xbox 360, demi.  You better pack up your PlayStation 3!

Anyone who pre-orders Culdcept Saga from GameStop gets some kind of art book/user guide that basically tells random losers what the game is about so they're not shocked to find out it's not some lame loli JRPG.

Willco, is there a reason that GameStop doesn't post their trade-in values anywhere? I assume it's so I lug all my games to GameStop and am too depressed to take them back home when I hear what they have to offer. But I also am thinking it's time to get rid of Bullet Witch once and for all.

The values fluxuate daily; I have to keep a binder full of daily price changes no less.  And the values don't always necessarily decrease.  For instance, the PS2 Slim and Large were worth $30 and $25, respectively, a couple of months ago.  Now they're worth $45 and $40.  The Xbox 360 used values have fluxtuated dramatically over the past fiscal year.

Same thing with games.  It'd be too much effort to constantly post and update all the values.  Plus, the customer service nightmares that would ensue from that would suck.  You'd print off a value you found for a certain game on Friday, come to trade it in on Monday, find it you'd get less since Friday and argue with me all day long.

Not really--assuming your website hooks into the same database as your store systems, it wouldn't be any additional work at all. I can imagine the customer service arguing would be pretty obnoxious, however.

It would just be nice to know if a game is worth $5 or $25 before treking over there. :/

You're assuming GameStop has the tech people in place capable of doing that, when I can cite several dumb-dumb tech problems that I have with our very own P.O.S.  We lack some of the basic features that most retail operations and it wasn't until the past year 'till the merger that EB Games dumped a DOS-based P.O.S. for a Windows-based one.

Just call ahead and ask for the values.  I do it all the time.  The only time I don't is when someone calls on a Saturday during the busiest time of the day with a list of like, 20 games.  Considering I need a free register to look up some information, sometimes that's not feasible.

Bitches don't know bout my Culdcept.  :-*

A few things. One, I managed to grab a preorder booklet despite the fact that I didn't preorder. This is probably because roughly 10 people in the United States of America preordred CS. So if you just ask for one, you'll probably get it. It's not anything spectacular but it does have some pretty nice art in it, and it's good to give to a friend who's like "WTF is Culdcept Saga?"

Two, if the booklet had been about 1/4 of a inch narrower it would have actually fit in the case, which would have been nice. :(

Three, the instruction manual is 50+ pages and full-color. :rock Probably because the game itself is a little more complex than just "Press RT to shoot Dino. Press X to stab Dino. Press Y to use Injun Vision which lets you observe realistically rendered Dino animation."

More thoughts.

Four, despite offering you a few limited character creation options, there's no way to not play as a faggy emo kid. I tried various options, but he looks faggy and emo no matter what you do. You can only make him look more or less faggy.

Five, the voice acting is lawl-worthy.

Six, the writing and story is also lawl-worthy. Your guy is a slave, and not some cool slave like Conan, but a faggy emo slave who will probably be put to work as a sex butler for some Caligula-type dude. But then some princess finds out you have the power to cast spells with cards, so you end up in a Yugioh card battling arena instead. Then you get lines like: "Wait, stop! Do you sometimes dream about stars exploding from the darkness?!"

Seven, the gameplay is total nerd porn. I've made it through the first two matches, and already I'm itching to do some deck building. :hyper I gotta hurry up and win some more matches so I can get some good cards.  :heartbeat Then we can pit our faggy emo kids together!  :hump

You're already hitting Faustia. When she comes down to the gladiator stalls to gush about your amazing technique (it was just like in her dreams!) you think she was talking about card battling?

Holy crap, this game is like a nerd orgasm.  I fuckin' adore it.  Too bad nobody will buy it.  Bandai Namco sent my store two copies - one of them was my reserved copy.  Fuck Devil May Cry 4 - this is where the fun is at!

I can play anytime tomorrow after 9PM PST.

I love the game, but part of me wonders if this wouldn't have been better introduced as an XBLA game.  At least we know that there are a handful of Evilboreans up for the game.

Eh, it'll get more notice from folks browsing a brick and mortar store than as a XBLA game.  At $39.99, it's already budget-priced and there is a ton of content.  I'm not sure what it'd benefit from if it was offered as a XBLA game.

I think at least seven or eight people bought it today.

Why would you buy it as a XBLA game and not a retail copy?

Why would you buy it as a XBLA game and not a retail copy?
good question, here are some thoughts:

- cheaper for the consumer
- play the game off the HDD, no need for discs
- graphics ain't anything special so it would be better as an arcade title
- 10/15 price tag seems reasonable and in the long term it may be profitable, plus you can't rent or buy it used which means more profit.
- it will always live on the marketplace, game won't go anywhere

Maybe I'll play it alongside you guys just so I can talk about it at least. It's a great game, but the Japanese online gamers are seriously hardcore so I don't stand a chance.

Hey, I'm seriously hardcore too when it comes to my beloved Culdcept. I trashed the whole fucking house after coming in second last night. Beezy: I am a dickhead, I should've said to Drinky "hey invite Beezy!". I blame the booze and the drugs.

I'm sorry, too, Beezy.  I just wasn't sure that was you because of "eezy" being kinda commonplace in internet handles.

That was a fun game last night.  I tried to save the replay, but it didn't work (when I go into the replay section, it says I have no saved replay data).

Man, I played an online match last night and this guy's whole deck was pretty much made out of cards I'd never even seen before. Back to single player mode.  :lol

Do the cards you win in campaign transfer to your multiplayer deck?  I just guessed that the two decks would be separate from one another.

Yeah, you can bring your deck online.  Part of the strategy is removing certain cards from your deck or creating a deck that is strong in certain elements.

I only played one campaign match last night.  I don't have a whole ton of free time, either, so I won't be able to nerbo out on the game.

Yeah the games are loooong.
How long are you guys spending on online matches? Offline takes long enough, but with real players and real intelligence, I imagine it takes even longer.

I think all said and done, false starts considered, it probably took between 60-90 minutes.

There's a clock in game that limits players to 60 seconds to do shit, so it keeps the game moving.  It certainly didn't feel long.

I got beat on the first stage last night. Like...crushed. It's been a long time since I've played, and Culdcept isn't really like riding a bike.   :-\

After the shame, I added the pity cards into my deck and destroyed her by over 50%. Gas cloud FTW.

I might try to go online later tonight, depends what time my wife goes to sleep. She hates Culdcept with a passion, so if there is anything at all 'better to do', I can't play.   :'(

The game is regionally locked for the U.S. territories and as such, will not be playable on a PAL set Xbox 360. I know that there are many dedicated Culdcept fans in Europe, so I ask that you please be patient while we determine our release plan for the game in that region.
