Title: What was the best thing Monty Python ever did?
Post by: TVC15 on February 06, 2008, 05:05:37 AM
This made me ask the question:

John Cleese points out that The Holy Grail is esteemed in America, whereas Life of Brian is esteemed in England.  This got me to thinking about what Monty Python's one major contribution to the future has been.

Me?  I have to side with Life of Brian.  I grew up in a catholic household, and while I don't want to give the flick too much credit, it definitely was a reinforcing factor when coming to recognize religion of all stripes as nonsense.  In that way, what is on the surface a comedy or a farce becomes an actually important movie.  Arguably more important than the most shocking of documentaries.  And I am pretty positive I am not alone on that point.

The TV show outshines the movies any day, with the exception of The Meaning of Life.

Life of Brian rules
Holy Grail is just goofy...it's fun, but dumb

What, no Meaning Of Life?  Let the people choose!

I took the TV series, because it still stands up well.  For all the ballyhooed anarchy most of the best skits had a very good structure underneath, which helps keep the material funny after the shock of the absurd has worn off.

I added Meaning of Life.  I only left it off because I basically considered it an extension of the TV show.

Terry Gilliam did a lot of good stuff.

I picked him, mainly because most of the movies he has done I've liked. Jobberwocky was great imo. It was... different. :P

they've been doing it since the 80s, you'd think they would have found some other cultish comedy to revolve around by now

I got to second base with Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album playing in the background.
Good CD.

Good CD.

Not third? It's right there in the song and lyrics, man!
