Title: Whoever wrote the IGN AU review for LO is my new hero
Post by: bluemax on February 06, 2008, 05:55:47 AM
Quote
Such traditional development is a problem for two reasons. One, it keeps happening and players keep buying into it, which means that it'll continue. Two, every time I have to play as a stoic lead character with no past who is out to save a dying world, it makes me want to cut someone – and it just might happen. It gets to the point where you can start picking the twists just by looking at the character design. That's bad. By the time the loveable rogue meets the rambunctious princess and they start to fall for each other, you'll either reach for your copy of Final Fantasy IX or go all gooey because you've never played an RPG before.

I've been feeling this way about JRPGs since, um Skies of Arcadia. Of course people will eat it up, but still, I was hoping for more than a PS1 era FF knockoff.

I'm not sure why people even bother with japanese rpgs anymore.

Because they're good?

Nothing wrong with a little tradition now and then.

Yeah, PS1 was like the second best RPG system of all time.

SoA was um, amazing. Most western rpgs are sandbox trash that result in hours of usless and aimless tinkering and wandering around. Exceptions are there, but I've found more to like in JRPGs then WRPGs. Having to 'imagine' or create the elements that make a WRPG good is bullshit. Morrowind was fun, I dumped a lot of hours, but its a pointless game that only served to point out just how pointless its sequel was.

And how is this as bad as every generic fps ever? They all contain big dudes with big muscles who have to save the world from some enemy that has destroyed it or something. Yawn.

In fact, how is this any different from the movies? You can do the same thing with movies. THere's the guy who falls in love with the girl, the smart ass guy;etc. there are arche types that are universal. Who the fuck cares. Enjoy the damn game.

I think my main problem with WRPG fans is its the same intolerant people I see bitching about anime, when anime is in fact a very LARGE field of subject matter and does not always boil down to what they quickly assume to sloppily define their macho reality. JRPGs are GOOD, there are lots of GOOD JRPGs cause the japanese MAKE A LOT OF RPGs!

The only good WRPGs come from a VERY select bunch of devs, and a lot of these RPGs from western devs are given A LOT of fucking credit for doing something really low budget and boring. BUT OMG GOLDEN DAYS OF SOME SHIT JESUS!

Why does the American media hate traditional RPGs?

morrowind WAS pointless, there are pictures of people stacking pillows. Hillarious yes, but ultimately pointless

Fool!  Pillow stacking is an integral part of the Western RPG experience!

Yeah, apart from Christian Nutt, I can't think of any western mag reviewers who actually are into the JP RPGs at all. It really sucks seeing such amazing games get shitty scores. I remember BKO got something like 6.0's and 4.5's... that just gets a big "what the fuck" from me, seeing as it was one of the best games from last gen. Plenty of awesome RPGs have gotten totally shafted - Dragon Quarter, Etrian Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of the Abyss, the aforemented BKO. I guess western reviewers prefer action-oriented combat, dialogue trees, create-a-character, and an illusion of nonlinearity, to more sophisticated turn-based combat and a more linear, focused quest.

Honestly, for all the talk of JP RPGs not progressing at all (which is bullshit since I can name at least 10 different last-gen RPGs with completely different mechanics, and not to mention the action and strategy offshoots of the genre), the Western RPGs have actually *devolved* in recent times... my understanding is that games like Planescape Torment, BG2, Fallout, Ultima 6-7 are more involved and higher quality than stuff like Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Oblivion, etc.

The main complaints I have with the JP RPG genre (this occurs in 90% of the genre) are:
-Strategy guides/FAQs are necessary to find a lot of secrets/subquests
-Towns have like 3 buildings in them

In general, I hate the argument in the games media that a game does not merit a decent score because its gameplay is "traditional", be it a JRPG or a shooter or what have you.  So what if the core gameplay is essentially decades old?  If it's fun - it's fun.

My only problem with LO being traditional is not the combat but the camera, i wanted something like Blue Dragon or Assassin's Creed, free camera control.

this way, I'd feel more impressed and say, yeah this is next gen alright.

but it's just me, there are lots of folks who prefer LO's camera.

The only world in a JRPG that is as interesting as Morrowind's in terms or architecture is FF12.

8.2 from the US IGN 360 site.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/849/849927p1.html

6.5 Presentation
The story is so-so, the menus look ancient and the loading screens never seem to stop.
8.0 Graphics
Excellent enemy design and attractive special effects. The framerate is distracting at times.
7.5 Sound
A good soundtrack, but mediocre voice acting.
8.5 Gameplay
Though it's very traditional, the ring-building and skill system are highly addictive. Turn-based combat is actually fun.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
The four discs will last you anywhere from 35-50 hours, depending on your thoroughness. There's not much reason to go back once the quest is finished.
8.2
Impressive OVERALL

Does your avatar imply you like Mario & Luigi RPG, because if you do, you don't have much of a leg to stand on regarding "originality".

Haha, my avatar is a joke. If you look at the full image its a copy of Mario and Luigi I found at Best Buy with a sticker on it that says "Best RPG on XBox".

I found it funny that the best RPG on XBox was a Gameboy Game.

I love the places this thread went. Where did I say FPS' were without scorn? Where did I say WRPGs were free from criticism? Nowhere.

The only WRPGs I've completed in the past I dunno 5 years are KoTOR and ME, none of which are without a heavy share of genre flaws.

Jumping to the island of conclusions!

I absolutely feel this way.  And I used to be one of the people who loved them! They rode that formula into the ground.

What was the point of that anecdote in the AU review about fighting the insects or whatever?  I didn't get why it was supposed to be a balance problem or any kind of problem.

X-Play just gave Lost Odyssey a 3 out of 5. They really like those 3 out 5's lately.  :-\
