I'm finishing some stuff up on Blue Dragon before Lost Odyssey comes out next week and I've gotta say...the visuals in this game are just so damn good. After all the Lost Odyssey media I've seen the past month or so, I honestly don't think LO's graphics have anything on BD's, which is extremely diverse.
Maybe the game looks better in your face or something.
I doubt you can examine every single object in Lost Odyssey like you can in Blue Dragon either. :D

I will still never get how Blue Dragon got pooped on by the media.
-
Better than Chrono Trigger
-
And Final Fantasy
-
And Persona / SMT

Especially since DQ8 was given 9s by everybody. At worst, Blue Dragon is DQ w/ much better graphics.

I was going to pick up either this or Persona 3 on Sunday. What do you guys think?
-
Persona 3. That'll be rare faster. It's also, imo, better. But that's subjective.

Blue Dragon, dur, it's the better game
-
Blue Dragon because you should trust Demi and Maf over Himumu.
-
Blue Dragon because ILL NEVER GIVE UP!!!

RPG of the century gets a 6.0 at Gamespot. :'(
Honestly, best RPG in like, um, a long fucking time....
-
Best high production value rpg in a long time, yes.
There's been plenty of good niche jrpgs in the mean time though.
-
only if you like see-through character models...
-
and 5 fps
-
^^ what?!?!?!
-
I'd argue Eternal Sonata is a better looking one... my problem with BD stems from the excess depth of field effect they've got going on. Some of the later areas in the game look absolutely fantastic, though.
FFXIII, WKS, Infinite Undiscovery and SO4 are probably gonna end up being beautiful as well...

Blue Dragon is a really good RPG technically, IMO. It's balanced poorly (normal mode is too easy and hard mode does not change the balance, it just gives everyone MOAR), but the battle system is really fun.
The difference between DQ and BD is the story and the charm. Oh and BD is more like FFV than any DQ IMO.
-
I still haven't seen anything as visually impressive this generation as when the world splits up and leaves behind a bunch of cube planets on the 3rd disc. My jaw was on the floor.
If it weren't for all the screen tearing and the occasional slowdown BD would rank up there as one of the best looking games ever, imo.

I dunno. It has the DQ story set up: go through town by town, learn the town's story, save the town from trouble. It doesn't pull it off nearly as well, and it doesn't have nearly as much charm as the average DQ but it's good.

I should really get around to playing this game again, but I have no time for RPGs especially since the school semester has already started.

i played blue dragon a little bit while i was waiting for lost odyssey and i really liked it though it suffered from the save point problem - namely there weren't enough. but the way it moves and plays is fantastic. i just figured the story was going to be just pretty good if not uninteresting after saving town after town in the old style of nintendo rpgs (as someone else on this thread pointed out).
in other news lost odyssey's stories are fucking awesome. too bad the game has some flaws and there are some MAJOR save point distance problems.
-
What sort of flaws?
Didn'tn the GT review say there were checkpoints between save points?
-
BD had checkpoints before boss battles.
personally, i think all jrpgs should be like Enchanted Arms, save anywhere + fast forward battle animations, this is next gen bitches.

I agree save points should be spaced more evenly, but I have my problems with save-anywhere gameplay... namely, it kills nearly all tension. Then again, I'm a sucker for those oldskool games where every step may be your last, as you're wandering deep within a large, confusing dungeon low on HP, looking for a special item.
-
Actually tiesto, saving anywhere might fuck up the game more than that.
imagine saving in a place where you can't return to buy items or something, or a place where there is no grinding and you have to fight the boss to proceed.
still, rpgs are long and most adults can't afford to waste 30~50 min looking for a save point, just saying.
-
if you have some.
still, you beat me, FA :bow :bow
-
what a twist!

Jeez. Is Blue Dragon the best looking jrpg ever or what?
... 'or what', I guess. I just thought they were good, but then again I gave up 5 hours into the game when I got Mass Effect. In terms of JRPG graphics, I thought DQVIII and FFXII both have better/more interesting art styles (trying to sidestep the obvious graphics generation gap here).
JRPGs are so dead to me :(
