I'm on my parent's computer and there's no sound. They don't have any working speakers (lol) so I inserted my headphones into the jack. I can hear the static sound or whatever it's called, so clearly there is sound. But I'm guessing the sound is on mute.
Now, I'm looking to turn it off from mute but I don't see how. Usually the sound options are in the taskbar, but not on this computer. And when I went to Sound/Audio Devices in the Control Panel it said there is no audio device.
Anyone know what's up?

start - control panel - system - hardware. then click on device manager
click on sound/video controllers and see if anything is there or giving you a warning / caution icon

Yup I see a problem
AvanceAC97
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
I've uninstalled/reinstalled it no luck

try to find the drivers for it online and install/reinstall those
if that doesn't work, from device manager uninstall the device, reboot the machine, then from control panel "add new hardware" and let it find the card again
if it can't find the device still, then it may be bad and it's time to get a new one
