Title: I watched Nic Cage's The Wicker Man last night
Post by: TVC15 on February 11, 2008, 02:55:27 PM
Wow was this terrible.

So we've all seen the YouTube clips of the bad parts, but really, the entire movie is essentially one long bad part.

I guess it doesn't start out too terribly, but it isn't long until we are treated to the absurdity of Nic's daydreams where things get suddenly run over by tractor trailers.  And that's not the only time they pull the OMG IT WAS A DREAM trick in the movie, either.

Also, about halfway through the movie, Nic apparently forgets his mission and decides (rightfully so) that it's just more worthwhile to scream at women.  And then he ends up in a house where Nic goes from room to room seeing the most contrived "creepy" scenarios ever.

This might be the most inessential and distinguished mentally-challenged remakes I have ever allowed myself to see.  The original movie is totally a cult, love-it-or-hate-it thing, but it's funny to see that a remake more than 20+ years later has had to drop the entire sexual angle from the movie.  How things have gone backwards since then.  Without the sexual angle (and heck, the musical angle), you lose about 90% of the bizarre factor of the original.

This movie is also so poorly directed.  Whenever Nic discovers something SHOCKING, the camera stays on his fat distinguished mentally-challenged reaction too long, and by the time the camera reveals what he was looking at, I've already guessed whatever the fuck non-shocking-shock he has just discovered.  I am not sure if the director of this movie has actually seen a suspense or horror movie before.

There are other things.  Little things that would require too much explanation to describe when outside of their original context.  This movie is truly as bad as they say.  But I made it all the way through, on my Creative Zen W!

I think this one is in "so bad it's good" territory.  Must see, especially if you are a misogynist.

yeah i hated this movie - but it does have a strong core message for the kiddies - "Women will be the death of ya"

Dont follow a woman to your grave.

This was the film that cements LaBute's reputation as an absolute misogynist.  he tried denying it for awhile and hid it behind an artistic facade, but this seems to prove that stripped of any pretense, the guy really hates women.
I think more then that it cements LaBute's status as a guy who under no circumstances be allowed near any sort of genre film.  Or bees.

I downloaded this thinking it was the original film (which I still have never seen). It really was atrocious...i was asleep within 20 mins I think.

otoh, last night i watched both The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford AND American Gangster. AG is a solid 3 stars but Jesse James may well be a masterpiece. Rarely has such a slow burn of a movie gripped me so tightly. After it was over I sat listening to the music play over the DVD menu screen for about as long as I watched the Wicker Man. Incredible stuff. Why haven't I heard of this director before?

well he's only done one other film, Chopper, despite it launching Eric Bana's film career, wasn't widely seen.  Its pretty good, and very, very Aussie.
I've got BR Jesse James on my Netflix queue, but its gonna take a while until I can see it (a pox on thee, Very Long Wait).
