EDIT: For non-fancy SLRs, I strongly recommend the Canon PowerShot A-series of cameras. Nikon's Coolpix line is apparently really good, too, but I have been married to Canon. Fuji's Finepix line are good point and shoots if you do a lot of low light stuff. Sony's Cybershot line ranges from good to great (my point and shoot of choice is a Cybershot), but they have an excellent array of relatively easy to use features.

The Powershot is pretty much the better camera, but it eats batteries for breakfast. The Sony is a little smaller than a deck of cards, and the Powershot is twice as thick, which makes the Sony easy to keep in your pocket.

The Sony is also better for video. I think you can get about 22 minutes a gig at 640x480. Handy for blackmail purposes.

Not since high school, and that was long enough ago that it didn't cover digital at all. I didn't pick up the hobby again until last year (because it's the kind of thing you need money to make an initial investment into). I find it really neat how when you learn about the digital imaging component, there's a crossover space with computer graphics. It's neat to see things like HDR lighting turning up in photography and the like. Similarly, learning about computer graphics and monitors, there's a ton of crossover with technology.

That D300 is 500 bucks more than the 40D, but it has a lot more features. I'd have to buy new lenses, though, which means it's really more than a 500 dollar difference. :(

My laptop is bottlenecked at the videocard, as good as it performs for its size, more ram wont help any.

If it's in stock! This area is stocked with nerbos that nerbo more than me, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were sold out. You better believe that HD-DVD/Blu-ray writable drive is number one on my hit list.
