Title: Delayed sleep phase syndrome
Post by: cloudwalking on August 03, 2006, 05:18:32 AM
Anyone else have this problem?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome

Quote
* DSP individuals are night owls. They feel most alert and say they function best, are most creative, etc. in the evening and at night.
* They usually have tried many times to change their sleeping schedule. Failed tactics to sleep at earlier times may include relaxation techniques, early bedtimes, hypnosis, alcohol, sleeping pills, dull reading, and folk remedies. They often have asked family members to help wake them in the morning, or they have used several alarm clocks. Or family members - especially parents - have tried to get them up on time.
* Symptoms almost always begin in adolescence, childhood, or infancy.
* They are sleepy during the day, especially in the morning, if they have had to get up early. They sleep in on weekends (often past noon and for more than 10 hours) to make up for not getting enough sleep during the rest of the week. Some people with DSPS take naps during the day and feel refreshed afterwards.
* Some people with DSPS have occasional, sudden, and temporary reversions to sleeping at earlier times.

I've been like this since I was very young. No matter what time I wake up -- I can get up at 6 AM -- I still end up staying awake past 2 AM. I'm always really sleepy and sluggish for a few hours, but after I manage to shake that it's like I can't help but try and push it til dawn every night!

I work retail which causes me to have to be at work at different times depending on whether I open or close, but on the days that I open, it sometimes really kills me and I feel like I'd do anything to take a nap at work.

I guess I've just sorta learned to deal with it. Apparently DSPS is treatable but can never be cured. I was just sorta expecting it to go away as I got older. Anyone else suffer from this sleep disorder?

Well there's no known cure for it. There are some treatments here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome#Treatments

I've tried the melatonin and the chronotherapy a few times and it's never worked for more than a week.

If I fall asleep I'll fall asleep but I usually want to wank to porn first.  I haven't had insomnia in a long time.

I used to be like that.  It really got bad when I stopped working.  So I tried working out in the mornings, it woke me up and tired me out so I went to sleep at a more reasonable hour.

I'm up right now at the butt-crack of 7am because I've tried to get "normal" sleep hours but it backfired.

I've been like this all my life. No matter what my sleep schedule just shifts so that I'm asleep during most of the AM hours but awake in the PM hours.

When I carpool I get up at 6, when I dont im up at 5. Anything to avoid Seattle traffic.

Honestly tho I dont even need an alarm clock; I just wake up.

Wow, that's me to a T. I remember when I was a kid I would stay up until well after midnight watching Nick at Nite even when I had school the next day. My mom would try to get me to go to sleep earlier but I would just end up laying awake in my bed for hours. I still have this problem, I have to work early in the morning Mon-Fri and I can't go to sleep before 12, I always catch up on the weekends though.
