Title: Lost Planet PS3 = Puke
Post by: bork on February 21, 2008, 11:08:11 AM
What happened here?  The first thing I did in the PS3 version of the game tonight was go into a multiplayer match.  Things weren't moving smoothly, which is strange since it didn't feel like lag.  In fact, going into an underground area below all the action sped things up again.  Uh-oh.

I then went into the single player mode.  Started up a new campaign, and within the first few SECONDS of game play, the game was slowing down and it felt like I was playing underwater.

Perhaps this is some small issue that can be fixed with a patch.  Perhaps the 5gb mandatory install somehow messed something up.  Or perhaps this is just a bad port, and the 360 version that was released back in December 2006 is much better.

It's too bad.  I wanted this version for the extras.  I don't think I'm going to be able to stand the slowdown long enough to ever see them.

It takes a lot to get me to just sell something right back to the store the next day.  This is one of those games.  I'm no frame rate whore, but this is some inexcusably bad shit.

can you check the manual first? wonder what studio handled the port.

I'm going to delete the install and try it one more time in case something really messed up.  It's hard to fathom Capcom releasing something as crappy as this.

I don't see any other companies listed in the manual.

Nah, still in Japan. I did quit my job though. I've got 3 weeks until I'm jobless and homeless. Oh well, a friend back up north said I can live in his spare room for free until I can afford to pay rent. I'm going to be living on instant noodles for a while though I think, because there seems to be fuck all teaching work around now.

Everybody keeps saying the PC version is the best when on my setup (Q6600 Core 2 Quad with a ATI X1950PRO and 4GBs of RAM) I can barely run the game at medium settings in a small window without it lagging miserably in DX9. Wtf are you fools talking about?

EDIT: Could be worth mentioning I've only played the Steam demo of LP, so maybe that means something.

What do you mean by "everybody"?  Gaf?  Whenever a multiplatform game is not available on the PS3 (e.g. Bioshock)  or sucks on the PS3 (e.g. Orange Box) , Sony fans magically become PC gamers that'll rather play those games on their PCs.  In your case, you're being held back by a relatively dated videocard.  LP, like most modern games, are GPU limited.

Dated? 8800s still cost 500 fucking dollars. I was gonna upgrade my card to play LP on my PC but the cheapest Nvidia 8 series was 350 bucks, so I'm just buying a 360 instead.

The only thing I ever saw about it was fanboy bitching and commentary that it didn't look as good as the 360 version.  Nothing about how poorly the game actually runs.  :P

Jesus fuck, NO!  Don't do it.  If you need something new, get Dynasty Warriors 6 over this turd of a port.

the fuck? an 8800GT, which will run LP aces on any dual-core (A64x2 or better), is like $250.

You can find the 8800 GT or even the 8800 GTS 512 for much cheaper than 350.  With either of those, most PC/360 games should run better on your pc.

I would probably get a 360 first though, as your videocard is not that bad for most games.

Exactly my thinking. I'm gonna upgrade my video card when I move over to DX10. I'm no slouch when it comes to computer specs, but right now I was hoping to dedicate most of my game time to console gaming instead of PC gaming, since I spent alot of my time next to my rig LAST year.

Lyte, how does it compare to this?  This trailer looks decent to me (about the same as the demo).  Seems pretty much on par with the 360 version.  PC version remains the ultimate choice (when ISN'T that the case these days?), of course, but the video makes it seem reasonable.  Was your experience that much worse?

But does anyone really even PLAY Lost Planet multiplayer on PC?

That video didn't seem to much slowdown at all.  The game absolutely chugs along at a lot of points.  I'm gong to try some more today and see if maybe it gets better a level or two in, and if the online got a patch or something yet.  I doubt it.

You gotta love Gamefaqs. I posted a brief comment about the PS3 version and have already been called a liar because "there is no single player mode" to compare with the 360 version.  Never mind that I was talking about the retail version and not the demo.   :lol

Probably not.  I've to check since I haven't played it in awhile but I think it's one of those GFW games which requires you to pay money to play online.  A subscription fee to play PC games online is probably the dumbest idea that MS has ever had.

The game does look amazing on a high end PC though.  Imagine the 360 version with twice the resolution and framerate, plus a significant bump in special effects.

Oh yes, I believe I mentioned earlier on that I saw it running at a store on display and it looked quite nice.  But it's not going to look like that on my current PC and my next computer is likely not going to be much of gaming platform at all...

there is a fee for playing against 360 users, not pc users.

same for gears.
