Title: what do you think of grandia, eb?
Post by: ananus on February 21, 2008, 08:43:22 PM: i saw gaf praising it some time ago, but from what i've seen of it, it doesn't look like it lives to the hype. i was going to replay ff8 after fft, but i might play this instead if it's as good as they say.

Grandia 1 is ok so is 2, give it a try i say.

and avoid 3 at all cost.

I love Grandia 2 to death though, it's easily my favourite JRPG thanks to the tremendous battle system. Millenia ruled.

I have Xtreme, but I've never played more than an hour of it.

Two was one of my first 3D RPGs. Completely loved it.

Just about everything about 3 was meh to horrible, but the battle system is hot sex and that's all I needed. I beat it in like 2 weeks.

If you're starved for a JRPG, go for it. But it's not magical, it is very, very obvious.

The story and its theme of discovery and wanting to travel to the unknown are pretty unique as RPGs of that generation go. The innocence and lack of angst were a welcome change of pace after turds like Final Fantasy VII and Legend of Dragoon.

As many have said, it hasn't aged well. 2 was decent, but (and I don't know why people are saying the opposite) the battle system was totally borked, lacking any semblance of balance - you just magic'ed your way through every fight in the game, basically. Never played 3 or 'Xtreme' or whatever that one was called, since they both had lackluster reviews. Overall, if you're thinking about it now, you should definately skip unless you've exhausted all the other, better JRPG options.

Say, have you played BoFV? ;)

Too bad the US only got the inferior version, with dubbing that sounded like it had been recorded using a couple of tin cans and some string.
