Title: Should Abrader buy a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12?
Post by: abrader on February 22, 2008, 06:39:51 PM
Hehe you know the ride - all stainless steel body - the car from Back to the future.....

I got a mate at my office who bought it new (he has number 58 from the production line) but it doesnt run anymore.

He wants to unload it and im looking for a project.

Whatcha think? Should I buy and refurb this piece of history?

I went out and saw the actual car and took pix but they are on my powerbook which is locked down in my garage and im too lazy to go get it hehe...but for those who dont know - this is the ride.

Nay - you can get a low mile working one for $25,000 or so.

This WOULD NOT make a good primary car - it would be for fun only.

Looks pretty nice.  How much is he asking for?

I guess it'll be cool to keep around as a collectible.  It's probably not worth spending too much money to get it running again.

Thats not the real pic of the car for sale - ill post those in a bit when i get them off of my notebook...

I snapped some shots at the guys house.

He has to sell the car because of his home owners association.

Topic re-opened because isn't there supposedly a new production of these cars coming?  I read something about a new company taking over and restarting the DMC.

Interesting.  I had no idea that celebrities and the British government funded the DMC, and that it was built in Northern Ireland!'

The video says you can buy used models refurbished or new models built using genuine parts.  Used is around $25k, "new" are around $40k.

Now I see what Particle Reality is talking about above - he wants a new 2008 DeLorean

Anyone have any new pix of the 2008/2009 model?

I was hoping to buy this non working 1981 DeLorean for under 5K.

The guy decided he doesn't want to sell and will instead have the car towed off to storage until he can get around to fixing it.

Have you driven one before? I never have.

Im not sure I can feel excitement over $60K on a car which wil have such small production numbers (says 20 per year in the Wikipedia article)

I was hoping id end up with this 81 DeLorian then I would have my 08 Infiniti for day to day and the refurbed DeLorian for fun and amusement.

Is the 2008 DeLorean different?  Because the ones you can buy new now look exactly the same.  You can have some things added though...watch the Youtube video I posted.

The problem with refurbishing one of these things is finding a working flux capacitor.

Abrader, why don't you just buy a Porsche?  It's better than all the cars you've mentioned.  Combined.  You can find a 2000-2005 Carrera for a good price.  Also, Porsches have some of the best resell values and most of the used cars are in great shape.  Once you've driven a Porsche, you wouldn't want to drive anything else.

The new Boxster and Caymann are way better drives than the old Boxster.  In terms of handling, the Cayman is even better in some ways than the Carrera.  It's a shame that Porsche limits the power on the Cayman because it's not their high end model.  There's no better car than a Porsche at making you feel like a world class driver.  My dad's friend has owned both Ferraris and Porsches and he finds the Porsche to be superior for most purposes.  I've driven high end BMWs and Benzes and they feel like low end rentals compared to a Carrera.

You're going to have to have to get some sort of banging futuristic nu-rave outfit to wear when you drive it. There was a DeLorean parked at the pub next door to my house last year and it was awesome apart from the conservatively-attired 60-something banker driving it. It's the sort of thing where you have to go all or nothing and no-one wants nothing so I guess it has to be all.

But yeah, do it.

This was actually a big deal when I was growing up in NI, because the factories of foreign companies tended to get bombed by the various terrorist organizations around at the time. The economy was absolutely fucked so the govt. offered extraordinary tax breaks but DeLorean was (IIRC) the only one mad enough to take the deal. For that reason, it's quite sad that the whole enterprise turned out to be such a dismal failure. Still, you have to salute that kind of enterprising lunacy.

Hey thanks.

I just did the research and the Cayaman-S fully configured the way I want it is pretty affordable.

I liked what I read in reviews.

I will test drive.

For $25K, I'd rather have a fully-loaded Chevrolet HHR SS.

2008 - fresh off the truck. I got it with 8 miles on it.

I never rode in an SS.

It's a cute ute that can run the Nuburgring at around 8:40, which is not bad considering the curb weight and specs. What's not to like? :-*
