Title: Evilbore's Academy Award for Best Picture and Academy Awards Discussion Thread
Post by: Bloodwake on February 24, 2008, 08:29:52 PM
I figured we needed a thread an hour from showtime polling this forum on what they think should win, since we are all highly elitist and proud of it.

So, vote your asses off and give some discussion. My choice:

What you said.

I'm attempting an IRC jinx of Michael Clayton right now. It worked with Tom Brady.

Why is Transformers not on that list?! This is EVILBORE'S Academy Award, right?!

This is a travesty.

What do you think of There Will Be Blood?  Everything I've read about the film suggests to me that it's a simple film that's not saying as much as people think it is.  Even DDL's performance sounds pretty one dimensional.  If that role were played by a less famous actor, I couldn't see how that performance would be worthy of a nomination , much less an award.

See the movie. I can understand why people wouldn't like it, but it's a great film. It's not particularly flashy I guess.

DDL's performance is beyond amazing. As I said in my acclaimed review, the performance is so good that you forget he's acting. He becomes the character

But there don't seem to be many nuances to that character.  Should he be rewarded for playing that character perfectly, if that character wasn't that hard to play in the first place?

I think I'm the only one here who actually liked no country more than there will be blood actually  :-\

Well, Ebert agrees with you.

Miles Trahan called There Will Be Blood "the greatest movie in the last fifteen years" and gave it a score of 9.5/10.  So, I dunno, if that movie wins, I'll :lol

I know the Shake Award is depressing, but he's right, it really does deserve it.

No Country for Old Men is just as good though. I think for me it's just personal preference.

Isn't it pretty dangerous to download films?  Especially if they aren't even on DVDs yet.  My cousin got a warning letter once from his ISP so I"ve never dared to DL a movie before.

The pacing is perfect?  Mupepe is insane.  It's good, but way overrated.  I haven't seen There Will Be Blood, but I really have no interest.  Don't like Paul Thomas Anderson and the folks I trust all say it's just a Daniel-Day Lewis vehicle.  Pass.

Nope.  I really dislike the artfag circle jerk that Paul Thomas Anderson creates, and I just don't like his filmography in general.  I almost bit the bullet to see There Will Be Blood for Daniel-Day Lewis, but when folks I trust told me the deal - I passed.  I haven't seen enough legitimately good films to waste time on a director I actively dislike, even if it's a flawed, but decent vehicle for an amazing actor.

I'm like 50-50 on PTA.  Boogie Nights is one of the best movies of the 90s (no, really), Magnolia is an indulgent mess (with some great performances), Punchdrunk Love is at least mostly successful.  Dude is clearly talented, and I like that he keeps doing projects so vastly different from each other, but at the same time, this tendency prevents me from getting into his hype queue.

You don't like P.T. Anderson either? Thank God I've met someone who shares my dislike for the guy and his movies.

And yeah, The Yiddish Policemen's something-or-other, some bizarre murder mystery/alternate history that takes place in Alaska.  I haven't been keeping up on my Chabon but it sounds unique, to say the least.  Coens :bow

Bloodwake, did you see La Vie en Rose? By all accounts, Cotillard went through an amazing transformation for the role of Edith Piaf.  Everything I've read indicates she worked the hardest and deserved it the most.

Also, she's prettier than Ellen Page.

Bloodwake, did you see La Vie en Rose? By all accounts, Cotillard went through an amazing transformation for the role of Edith Piaf.  Everything I've read indicates she worked the hardest and deserved it the most.

Also, she's prettier than Ellen Page.

I will watch it now, that's for sure.

But Ellen Page is my age and has similar tastes, and I want to do her.

Not counting their recent missteps like The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty, I'm assuming?

Fargo's a good movie and all, but it's kinda slow in a non-effective way.  I get kinda bored watching it and I want to skip to the good parts.

It's a really good movie, but it's a hard one to recommend without caveats, so I'm not surprised it was snubbed.  It's very deliberately paced, aka the good kind of slow, and a lot of people don't like that.  I'm also familiar with the subject matter, so there's that aspect--I might be finding it more interesting than someone going in blind.

So yeah, it's good.  I really like it, but I wouldn't be surprised if many didn't.  Awesome score, too.

Just from what little I've seen of No Country through clips and such, I think Affleck should've picked up the Oscar.  Playing an icy sociopathic killer like Bardem did is every actor's ice cream dream, like scoring a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow or a cripple role - there's almost no way they can be accused of overacting, and audiences/academy members eat that shit up.  Affleck gave a very nuanced performance, I couldn't ever tell he was "ACTING."

Yeah, Zodiac should have at least picked up some nods, definitely.

Silver Age Jesse James or Golden Age Jesse James?  They're very different, so this is an important question!

jesse james was a piece of shit, really, and most films paint him as some sort of robin hoodish victim forced into a life of crime, which is utter bullshit

Have you seen this yet?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The retconning of Jesse James after his death is a sort of plot point
[close]

perhaps I am not being clear

yes, I saw the movie

Ichi wants to have a Jesse James movie marathon

I am pointing out that, prior to Assassination, most (if not all) films about Jesse James have presented him in the light of the "Robin Hood" myth/legend, and are going to be very different films than Assassination.  Assassination is probably the closest you're ever going to get to the truth of the matter.

Yah, I know.  That's kinda why I want to see how the portrayals change and evolve through time.  Or in the case of Colin Farrell as Jesse James, DE-evolve, hahahah.

I loved it.  I can see watching it several times.  Excellent blind buy.  I was really impressed with Sam Rockwell - the scene at the end where he "becomes" Jesse onstage is downright eerie.

The Long Riders is a pretty good flick if you haven't seen it, Ichi.

Even Assassination alters some facts to allow for storytelling compression, though

Is that the one with Stacy Keach as one of the James Bros.?  If so, I've seen it, and liked it.  Also seen American Outlaws (which would not be part of said marathon...I saw it for Timothy Dalton!!!), and I Shot Jesse James.

It's a History Channel special on the James legend.  It has some awful acting during the "reenactment" parts, but there's a lot of interesting historical trivia in there (like the guy who found $32,000 worth of gold Jesse buried).

It's like you're reading my mind here. I was rooting for Affleck too. Bardem's character is very memorable, like Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. But it was essentially a one-note performance, just exceptionally well done. I wouldn't have any confidence (based on only seeing NCFOM) that Bardem could handle a deeper role. I'm pretty confident that Affleck is the real deal though. Thanks to the magic of DVD screeners, i'm hopefully seeing TWWB tonight, but so far I give the nod to Jesse James for cinematography, score (Nick Cave :bow), supporting actor and possibly director over NCFOM*. The same cinematographer did both movies actually, so I'm wondering if the director had more of an influence in making Jesse James look so great. Hard to tell from this side of the camera, really....

*This is by no means a knock on NCFOM, which i heartily enjoyed.

Javier Bardem IS a great actor with plenty of range, though.  The thing is, it's just a juicy role (much like Daniel Day-Lewis's), and the Academy looooves to reward people for this type of thing.

But who cares about awards, really?  Other than serving as some sort of validation for your personal tastes, they are meaningless - especially stuff like the Oscars.  Fun to discuss, but they will not affect how a picture is seen twenty, thirty, or even fifty years from now.

I wonder when Nick Cave is going to write another movie.  The Proposition was pretty well-received, right?  Maybe he is getting more interested in movies in his old age.  It's pretty awesome that he fronts the best best band in the world and the movies is like his side gig. <3 Nick.

Casey is awesome in the Assassination of Jesse James.  Going in, I kinda had a bias about actors with the last name Affleck, but he's pretty awesome.  I believe this is my first exposure to him.

Yeah, I think I am going to buy The Assassination of Brad Pitt by the Coward Casey Affleck on BLU-GAY sometime this week.  I came close to making a blind buy at Best Buy a week ago, but I just don't like doing that with my personal film collection.  I'm a sucker for westerns and the hype from folks I trust is too high, though.

I didn't get to see the DEATH MONTAGE.  Who got the most applause/tears - Bergman or Ledger?

True story.  The 1st cadaver I saw was a black guy with an absolutely gigantic member.  I don't know if it was the formaldehyde or what but the thing just looked unnatural.  It was at least a foot long and as wide as my forearm.  The balls were the size of my clenched fist.

and that's what inspired you to go into medical school?

The pacing is perfect?  Mupepe is insane.  It's good, but way overrated.  I haven't seen There Will Be Blood, but I really have no interest.  Don't like Paul Thomas Anderson and the folks I trust all say it's just a Daniel-Day Lewis vehicle.  Pass.

That's so unfair to Paul Dano I can't even tell you.

This movie, while flawed, was robbed.  Dano didn't even get nominated and without his performance the movie might have fallen apart.  Glad to see it got a Cinematography nod though, it was a beautifully shot and framed film.

As a movie guy, you owe it to yourself to watch it.  It has a lot more going for it than most mainstream flicks.

My grandpa loved it and said it was the best movie he's seen in a long time. Granted, he only recently started watching movies again, but it's tough to impress an 80-year-old Army veteran. I hadn't seen him gush over something like that in a while. It was cool to talk to him about a great film.

The Alfred Molina drug deal alone has enough awesome for five movies.

While I agree he can be a little iffy in some of the choices he makes, every PTAnderson film generally has great performances, fantastic music, and a good sense of humor.  I've yet to see anything from him that wasn't at the very least entertaining.

Magnolia has great performances and some great bits, but it's so ridiculous and indulgent that I can totally get people not liking it.  I'm not even a fan of it, really.  Punchdrunk Love is just a strange duck.  I'm a sucker for dysfunctional humor, and I think PDL is an interesting example.  It's no Todd Solondz or anything, but I dug it.

Like I said, I think PDL is an interesting weird comedy, but I'm not sure if it stands up with the greats of the weird comedy niche genre.  The most nicest objective thing I can say about PDL is that it does a fairly decent job of avoiding Sandler's more typical "modes."

I've only seen parts, but it seems like a movie that would trigger my usual complaints about biopics and especially Scorcese gangster movies.

Someone shoots to the top of an exciting, taboo business, then a combination of hubris and cocaine tear everything down.  Even if it's really well executed, I never enjoy it quite as much as it probably deserves.  Just a preference thing.

Magnolia is way too long, and random at that, so I can definitely see the hate for it.

There Will Be Blood is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Magnolia though. It's a different film altogether that never feels long and features not only the best performance in cinema today, but another one by Paul Dano that is also pretty damn good. I really think he got robbed for the best supporting actor nominee.
