- There's a stealth section in a prison where if you're seen you have to start all over again
- The voice acting is mediocre and the facial animations are worse than PS2-era RPGs.
- Jansen, in particular, has bizarrely extemporaneous voice acting--he didn't just phone it in, it sounds like he Skyped it.
- I had to suffer through poorly scripted cut scenes where Sakaguchi works through his mommy issues last night for almost two hours. I could have watched an Oscar-winning film in that amount of time.
- I don't like ANY of the characters.
- The characters often behave bizarrely out of character (c.f. mommy issues sequence, when everyone stops behaving in character and stops to weepily agree how sad everything is in life.)
- A supposedly emotionally moving sequence was reduced to a sequence of impossibly tedious fetch quests, followed by a poorly scripted untimed "rhythm" "action" minigame.
- Every city so far is an Estharian monstrosity of winding roads and unmarked buildings. I hate NPCs. I never want to talk to an NPC again.
- Some kids made me find their looking toys in said ginormous city.
The battle graphics are good, and I (want to) like the battle system. But the battles take too long (canned animations) and the town/cutscene/dungeon ratio in the first 10 hours is something like 30/50/20 instead of 20/20/60 (tolerable) or even 10/10/80 (preferred).
I really loved Blue Dragon and though that it was a charming distillation of everything I love about JRPGs. I guess that Lost Odyssey is all the parts left over after they made Blue Dragon.

yeah you coulda watched CRASH
-
Sounds like a typical Final Fantasy game
9.5/10
-
I <3 Jansen.
-
I like Lost Odyssey a lot more than Blue Dragon for some reason. Even so, the difficulty scaling is kinda of whack and brings to question all the fanboys that complain about heavy random encounters in a game. There simply are not enough in a natural play through to win some of the battles along the way. For example the flower garden battle. I lost the first time over and over at level 17, a level I made it to by naturally following game events and winning key battles. However at 17 the foot soldiers successfully block and the horse people do 300 damage from a Rush move. Nice.
So I went to the Crimson forest and I shit you not, ran in perfect circles until a random battle appeared. After a few of those I made 19, went back. I lost again. The cavalry units Rushed almost non-stop that match, and since they are behind the wall, precious little can be done. Stone? Petrify? haw haw, those never work! Dont waste cast time.
So I consult the strategy guide and it tells me to keep attacking and if someone dies dont bother to rez them cause you need to keep attacking. I KNOW this game can do smarter battles than that. Eventually I won not because of any deep strategy, but because on the 8th attemp, the cavalry units just didnt feel like using their Rush move anymore.
Fancy that.
Im past that now and back to the stuff I like so its not a huge knock. But anyone who bitches about frequent random battles needs to realize that if things arent done right, me running in place to get a random battle is actually more ridiculous than fighting tons of random battles. The solution is of course to create respawning fixed encounters that players can choose to engage.
I wont comment on the story, it is what it is. And what it is, is more interesting than FFX-12 and probably 13. The emo stories are well written and the dialogue is funny. Whatever, its a fukin RPG if I want good writing ill read the most excellent Halo novels.
-
I died in the mansion. That was kind of lame. Other than that, I've really dug it.
-
Im only 8 hours in so far
-
You're not too far behind me. I agree with an earlier point - the difficulty scaling. I died in the mansion, because the opponents were ridiculous. I'm not too far in, but it was frustrating enough that I haven't picked it up where I left off since I died yesterday. I think I need a temporary break.

well once you realize you need to stop and grind its fine, but there's no indication of where you should, save grinding EVERYWHERE until you get crap experience gain, but even then the experience gain from enemy groups is not set, and hardly predictable.
-
The characters often behave bizarrely out of character (c.f. mommy issues sequence, when everyone stops behaving in character and stops to weepily agree how sad everything is in life
Oh, I can see where you take issue with that, but come on, that's not entirely unrealistic. If you were present in the same room as a friends relative passed away and they were clearly very upset, would you continue to joke around like an asshole? Well, regardless of what you may have done, most people will probably show a little emotion in such a situation. Just because you are a happy go lucky, "I joke around all the time" kinda guy doesn't mean you'd continue to act that way in the presence of a tragedy.
-
Amazing game, Patel wrong
-
Most people who joke during periods of loss have issues with sharing feelings with others. People who do not emote anything just don't give a shit, which is fine. Still, the game is emo because MOST PEOPLE who are internet shut-ins like ourselves EMOTE when shit goes down.

To get a wee bit Freudian, I think people that joke when faced with death are just emoting a mental response of not being able to let external factors be able to "get them down". I'm that kind of person, and I find day to day life much more traumatizing than big deaths and the like. Big deaths are events to be savored and experienced, not in an emo-y way, but in the sense that we get to experience something like that only very specific circumstances. To have someone die on you is not something that happens every day, and there's good to be had in all experiences, regardless of whether a situation is viewed as typically good or typically bad.
-
I agree with demi. :o
-
I personally just dont feel anything about death right now. I havent had someone close enough die to me. Part of being human, however, is to exercise empathy, or at the very least, an appreciation for what others feel. Along those lines, I appreciate what the characters are feeling in Lost Odyssey even if I haven't felt that way before. I also appreciate that its a JRPG and not some epic work on the human condition.
-
yeah you coulda watched CRASH
(http://safeliving.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/crash_cover.jpg)
lacks turgidity
-
yeah, I also died like five times against the flower guards, and three of those attempts were "perfect" attempts with the maximum effective amount of strategy
I, too, had to run to the Crimson Forest in advance and fake grind til I stopped getting XP
I also haaaaaaaate Jansen. Everytime he opens his mouth it's like he's peeing in my ears.
-
no shit
jrpg on xbox = :lol
like fps on playstation
lololol resistance is good and killzone too!!!!!!
-
-The stealth section is like 5 minutes long and there are not one but TWO shortcuts you can open so you don't have to redo it.
-Matter of opinion I guess, I think it's competent but I don't play a ton of RPGs. People I've played it with think it's good and so do I.
-Jansen rules, I have no idea why half his lines are muffled.
-Haven't seen much problem with character motivation outside of maybe Ming
-Discs 2 and 3 are better with dungeons, I could see disc 1 being mind numbing if you don't like the plot/characters
MAF - I haven't leveled up at all, and I haven't had to retry a boss since the second one. I do try to get all the items though. You need to use (and have) the right spells and mind your rings! I'm pretty impressed with the leveling system, all the bosses seem perfectly balanced to still be challenging. I don't even remember the details of the garden battle, non issue for me.
Willco, use Shadow on the enemies in the mansion, or Force. Physical attacks with Shadow did me just fine though. Shadow is almost broken in its awesomeoness.
-
Wrong on Stratocaster, wrong on Lost Odyssey
-
Wrong for America.
-
:rofl

BACKLASH BACKFIRE

:(
Well, does anyone want to buy my copy of LO for $50 shipped, send me a PM
-
Wrong wrong wrong
-
demi :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow
-
$45
-
I'm interested, PM sent
-
then somebody tell me that the game takes an abrupt 180 into having cool gameplay and combat and character/system management, and not like sneaking into a castle through a sewer or a ghost house or something
P.S. it's $55 now, demi drove the price up

I have a lot of people who will agree with me too. The game comes down to luck. Rings wont save you from Rush spammed twice on the same character two rounds in a row, shield wont save you from that either. The fact that you don't even remember the flower battle does little to back up your point of view.
I will agree that Jansen is fine, he's like a horny james woods
-
Maf, when I was in the forest, I had like a random encounter every 2 secs. I guess it really did all come down to luck.
I agree with most of Patel's complaints but I don't see what's the big deal if you're a FF fan. If those issues bother you that much, then you are the type of gamer that have never enjoyed and will never enjoy a FF game. Anyone that likes FF but not LO is a lamer that deserves to be called out by Demi.
-
I dont totally agree with most of his complaints, I just have a few issues with some of the mechanics, but they arent game ruining for me. I will say that Blue Dragon, for whatever reason, could never hold my attention. Seeing a JRPG in its purist forum just wasnt as much of a revelation to me. I'd rather have the emo ffstyle trappings done right.
-
I think the FF fan inside of me is dead :(
-
It was the trip to Paris, wasn't it?
-
I think the FF fan inside of me is dead :(
Dragon Quest was always better anyway
-
Synth: Its really no wonder, the FF games have been shit for a while.
-
just another average jrpg on the 360. well at least they've got more this gen than the ps3 will ever have.

All the stuff you complained about takes like 30 seconds to beat. Finding the kids toys, 30 seconds. Funeral fetch quest, 30 seconds. Funeral torch mini-game, 30 seconds. Finding your way through the OMG SO HUGE towns, 30 seconds. Stealth part, okay maybe one minute. Wow, that's like three whole minutes of complaints in a 50 hour game. And the bad voice acting? I wouldn't know...BECAUSE I'M PLAYING IT WITH THE ORIGINAL JAP VO THE WAY GOD INTENDED!
Lost Odyssey separates the gamers from the whiners. :violin
-
Can you switch off the dumb fucking 'gunblade'esque twitch elements? I don't want that shit in my jrpgs.
-
It was the trip to Paris, wasn't it?
my trip killed my Asian fetish, made me buy The Fifth Element on Blu-gay, and turned me against FF-style JRPGs. :(
-
And the bad voice acting? I wouldn't know...BECAUSE I'M PLAYING IT WITH THE ORIGINAL JAP VO THE WAY GOD INTENDED!
The lip synch is done to the English audio. The Japanese audio is better, but still amateurish, and the janky lipflap was way more distracting than the bad English voice acting.
-
LO > BD
fail
-
i'd suck himu's cock dry
-
BD > LO
real talk
-
Jpn rpgs this gen = :lol
-
I'd argue there hasn't been a really great JRPG this entire gen. What happened! *sob*
-
BD > LO
real talk
:bow FOUX DE FA FA FOREVER!

We're entering our 3rd years in this gen, and jpn isnt stepping up at all. It's so weird.
-
You're standards are too high.
-
We're entering our 3rd years in this gen, and jpn isnt stepping up at all. It's so weird.
Not so weird actually. The majority of Japanese companies would rather support the PS3 than the 360. The only problem is that the PS3 hasn't sold at the expected pace.
-
I have only finished the first disc, but I strongly agree with Patel so far. The game is way too emo even for my taste. I just sold the game off to a friend.

seriously, if this is emo then you need serious help.

STFU WE ARE ALL TUFF DUDES THAT EAT NAILS.
Fukin posin!
-
I think the FF fan inside of me is dead :(
I thought Final Fantasy was art. ???
-
I have no problem with emotional content I just have problems with pointless cutscenes that take 90 minutes to make a 5 minute point
-
Patel, the point of every FF game can be summed up in less than a minute. Why even play the game?
-
I don't know anymore. :-\
-
in your moment of crisis, let me suggest yugioh gx tag battle
-
or do what i do: play ANGBAND, the man's man's game of choice
fuck these console nancies
-

Crisis Core? Though, some people will not classify it as traditional turn based jrpg.

Why are you so pissed off, brother? You're acting like your dad made the game. The game wasn't my cup of tea, that's all I am saying. :) The game had some very good qualities (graphics, music, battle system), but it just wasn't my type of RPG. I did not like the story nor the characters - which are the most important traits for me in an RPG. Not saying they were shit, just that they didn't appeal to me.
-
i am not pissed and my dad is dead.
thank you very much.

it's true that when they released FFVII in Europe, fans took the game back to the store and angrily demanded: what is this shit? This is not a game, they said.

Did that make you mad? I remember back in the #square DALnet days, you were one of the biggest Square fanboys in the land.
I wonder if that channel still exists, come to think of it.
-
back then, sure, but nowadays, I would be marching beside them!
LIBERTE, FRATERNITE, SOLIDARITE
-
So far, LO seems like it's gonna be better than any of the PS2 FF games...
-

LIBERTE, FRATERNITE, SOLIDARITE
I remember bitching about FFVII the very day I started playing it when I realized the translation was riddled with typos, grammatical mistakes, weird usage of English, and disappearing accents (like Cait Sith sounding like a hillbilly half of the time, and the other half speaking in neutral English).
I was so ahead of the curve of FFVII hate. :bow
I'm pretty sure one of the reasons for the protests may have been that FFVII got an English-only release throughout Europe.

If it was hard it would stand out in my memory. It was a total non-issue, unmemorable.

Just don't equip rings.

:(
Well, does anyone want to buy my copy of LO for $50 shipped, send me a PM
I'll buy it at a high price.
Maybe, I dunno I still haven't finished Blue Dragon and I promised I wouldn't buy another 360 until I finish COD4 and DMC4.
-
Ew, finishing CoD4?
-
Ew, finishing CoD4?
Shrug, I don't get to play games often right now so I like games I can play for an hour and actually accomplish something.

It usually takes 3-4 years for jrpgs to start really kicking in ANY gen
where the fuck have you people been
-
this gen is different himu.
the rpg company known as Square Enix have yet to make a next gen rpg, instead they are porting and remaking shit for handhelds.
which means other developers will be sleeping till S-E make one and lead the way.
thankfully MS need rpgs so they are financing some good ones for us, poor xfags.
-
I dunno whats more obnoxious, people who are all OMG I DONT CRY or people who are all PSHHAW EZ WTF U LOZARS.

I am not sure if I follow. A lot of what I've seen in this thread were valid complaints. It's not like posters are trolling and shitting up the main thread (at least not from what I've seen). It's always like this with the big-name releases. There are obviously people that will not enjoy the game, and having them contribute and voice their opinions is not always a bad thing.
-
SHUT THE FUK UP HIGH ROAD EVEN HANDED PRETENDER MAN U SUPERFAN STFU

hahahahaha, whenever MAF posts now, the old Blanka sound effects go off in my head.

SHUT THE FUK UP HIGH ROAD EVEN HANDED PRETENDER MAN U SUPERFAN STFU

In Japan "this" gen hasn't even started yet. X360 is DOA, PS3 is too expensive to catch on with the masses and Wii is a toy.

Now that everyone hates LO, I'm going to rent it.
i still :heartbeat LO

i don't know if either of you speak japanese, but i do, and the japanese voice acting is ass compared to english. besides, the voices were originally in english and the lips follow.
does anyone here speak/read farci, arabic, or russian? i think those languages are written on the walls in some of the towns.
-
I fairly ignorant of the language, but I am pretty sure it's Sanskrit.
-

We both do, and I mentioned that to Bebpo yesterday--LO's Japanese audio is surprisingly amateurish. The English is at least competent, the Japanese is some Growlanser-level shit.

i think the writings on uhra are indian though i am not sure.
i have yet to see any arabic/farci letters.
-
i know for sure the town in the north filled with snow and cold has russian all over it. i just don't know what it says.

well, i am still at the experimental staff.
i will let you know if i see any farci/arabic words.
