basically since the New Zealand dollar is worth a whopping 82 US cents (highest its been since 1985 :o), and since bluray won, I was thinking this is probably a good time to import a PS3. I had a JAP ceramic white PS3 in my cart at play asia.... then I freaked and closed the window....
I think I need more time to think about this... but just a couple of questions....
Any PS3 game or bluray movie will work on any PS3, right? Same goes with component cables? Im guessing then I'll just need to buy an adapter for the power supply and I'll be set...
I'l probably buy it next paycheck... unless you guys put me off the purchase... I mean theres shit all games that inerest me on the thing but theres a couple of interesting looking titles in the pipeline, Im primarily planning to use it as a bluray player. Can we expect a flood of films to land on the format now that it won the war?
-
Buy it when Hot Fuzz and Shaun come Blu
-
ps3 games are region free. bd movies generally aren't
-
so If I buy a JAP PS3, I'll have to import movies too?
-
just buy another 360
lol, if you ain't interested in ps2 games, get yourself the 40 gig.
-
I definitely want the white 40 gig model, I have a slim PS2 which is pink and pretty and I want it on display
-
Buy a PS3 when it gets free games like the PSP.
-
yeah it looks pretty sweet :D

you are in a PAL territory right?
surely you should be ordering all your movies from Amazon US anyways, given that i'm sure you get raped on prices locally?
yeah we do get raped, PS3s are like 900 dollars here which is why Im going to import...
-
I want a queer PS2 too!
-
buy a ps3 for the superior version of mgs4

buy a ps3 for the superior version of mgs4
there is another version!? :o
-
MEGATON, you heard it here first!
-
GAF THIS
-
Main reason I bought a PS3 was to play College Hoops 2k8 since it will never get released outside the US. I'm stuck with PAL Blu Rays though which are a fucking rip off.
-
I'm gonna end up buying a PS3 when the MGS4 bundle comes out. :'(
-
I bought a white PS3 three weeks ago and haven't taken it out of the box yet. Hell, i haven't taken it out of the shopping bag yet. This is the downside of buying Blu-Rays from amazon.com when you live in Japan :gloomy
-
You may want to consider a US ps3.
Some games have hardware based region "selection" which can result in differences. One example of this is uncharted, where playing on a japanese ps3 will remove the blood from the game and give you more limited language selection options. Disc contents are the same from region to region so the differences are applied based on what region your hardware is from.
If you have no interest in japanese ps1 backwards compatability (disc based) then just get a US one, especially if you plan on playing resident evil or anything violent on it.
as far as blu ray goes, there are 3 regions: US and Japan, PAL, and Dirty Commies
to recap:
-ps3 games from all regions work on all ps3s
-depending on the game, there may be in game differences depending on what region your hardware is from
-disc based backwards compatability region is dependent on console region
-BRD's are regioned, but theres not as many as DVD, US and JP are both region A

A white U.S. PS3 will release in the coming months. Just wait until then.. don't buy a Jap one.
-
I'll get a PS3 later this year. Just not now, I'm saving up for my Macbook Pro :hyper
-
niiice, yeah I think I should hold off on the triple, as I'll be working from home in the coming months and I'll need a new desktop PC
still on the fence.....

Can someone give me a low down on the backward compatibility?
PS3 40GB has none.
PS3 60GB (only available used) has perfect.
PS3 80GB is software, so not everything works?
Is this correct? If so, is there a list some where online that says which games can't be played on the 80GB? Does the PS3 do awesome stuff like upscaling?
-
Correct.
Sony's site has detailed compatibility info for the 80gb on their site somewhere.
It upscales with optional stretching/zooming, not as good as 360 tho.
-
The software BC works pretty well, and it plays about 80% of the PS2's library.
-
im gonna get one in the fall
have to find games that interest me tho, since i dont give a shit about mgs,ff,or gt anymore.

I thought I read somewhere it was higher than that. I own a 80gig and the thing has played every PS2 game I've thrown at it....I've been pretty darn happy with the BC. It's much better than the BC on the 360, of course the 80gig PS3 has the benefit of having the PS2 graphic chip built into the motherboard so it's not a pure software emulation.....which is fine with me.
BTW, does anyone know if the new upcoming 80gig's still contain the PS2 graphic synthesizer or did Sony take that out? They do so many revisions it's hard to keep track with what the hell they're doing.
-
The 80 giggers coming in the MGS4 bundle have BC.

What? I want a white ps3 but the thing is that I don't want 40 gb. I'm going to get the MGS4 bundle
