Title: Nintendo sponsored Brawl tourney starts on Saturday for those interested
Post by: The Fake Shemp on March 04, 2008, 02:43:49 PM
Almost all GameStop locations are doing tournaments for Super Smash Bros. Brawl preceeding the midnight launch of the game.  Although some of the conditions are up to the individual store, like start time and number of players (1 vs 1 or 4 player battles), they'll all be on March 8th.  The winner gets a trophy from Nintendo and goes to the District Tournament (at a store location pre-determined by the District Manager) the following weekend.  The winner of that tournament has to go the Regional Tournament, where the top 8 scoring semi-finalists will be flown out to the brand spankin' new San Jose tournament store (I've stepped foot in this behemoth, it is fuck amazing!)... and battle for $5,000, a plasma TV, a Nintendo Wii and a library of Wii games (including Brawl).  Entry is free.

If any of you jerks make it to San Jose, I'll come down and visit you personally, take photos and we'll openly mock you on evilbore.

I lucked out and will not be here for the Smash Bros. launch or initial tournament, but due to my performance and store size, my DM picked me to run the District Tournament. :(

I told Prole that a nerd posse came storming into my store a few days ago.  They were all 20-somethings with long hair, unshaven non-masculine facial hair, glasses, beanies and most of their wardrobe looked like it came from Hot Topic and Nintendo Power.  The heavy breathing and socially awkward nerd talk, such as discussing strategies for the Brawl tournament and whether or not Samus is hotter without a helmet, sent a female employee hiding behind a rack of DVDs until their immediate departure.  Two of them had Razor scooters.  And they're in their twenties!  I think they were going to 7-Eleven afterwards and one of them bought Mario Party 8 used.

If this is what I can expect en masse, I am scared, Cohen.  So very scared.

Since the opening of the San Jose tournament store (a so-called world class store), GameStop has stepped up their efforts to make it a legitimate competitive gaming powerhouse.  Within the same month of the Brawl tournament, the San Jose tournament store is also hosting a Rainbow Six Vegas 2 tournament with a grand prize worth $10,000 and some other stuff.

Yeah, Rman, no joke.  They came in wanting to sign up for the tournament and to buy Mario Party.

I think my manager had to take me off hiatus and out of the computer, meaning I'M ELIGIBLE.

So I will probably kick ass at the tournament.

I might have to check this out.

I'm just going to buy a box of Lucky Charms and a box of Count Chocula and pour them IN THE SAME BOWL and see who wins.
:lol

No it doesn't. It definitely looks like shit on LCDs though.

You forget, Prole, as Wilco said, some of the competitors may be older than Bloodwake.

Pink Godzilla held a Brawl tournament here in Seattle a few weeks back. I saw some of the pictures, and was totally creeped out.
