I'm hoping for an Obama victory in both states, but if it turns out to be a split between Texas and Ohio, what's gonna happen? Hillary's not gonna bow out, right? I'm really getting tired of this primary season and I wish the Democrats would choose a candidate already. :-\
-
So many Hillary campaigners tonight :-\
I was glad though, there was a gigantic turnout. The people there said it has never ever been like this previous years. Primary turnout for Harris County is usually ~30,000. 30,000 for Houston is fucking pathetic. I hope this is making the youth realize how important this actually is.
-
One of the conspiracy theories I've heard is that if Obama gets nominated, Hillary's gonna work to sink his presidential campaign so she can run again in four years. I actually would not put this past her. I mean, I was saying back when she was running for senator in New York, she was only doing this so she could get some political experience for her inevitable presidential bid.
-
I wouldn't put it past her either.
It'll be close I think. But to be honest, I see Hillary winning Texas.
If Obama loses Texas I'm blaming Mupepes' people, if he wins Himu's people get the praise.
Hispanics do love Hillary. But there are A LOT of older blacks who simply don't trust Obama
-
I thought Mupepe was a registered Republican, anyway.
Man oh man, why do hispanics love Hillary? She doesn't even speak espanol like Bush.
-

Doesn't matter what you're registered as in Texas.
And they love her because they loved Bill
-
I never liked Bill Clinton. Helluva president, but I never got the appeal.
-
He's charismatic as fuck. So many hispanics entered the country under his Presidency and he never "cracked down" on the border issues. They love him. There's an article about how many hispanic restaurants and stores in Texas have pictures of him hanging on the wall, and it's really true.
-
How can you not get the appeal?
I hear him talk and he just comes off as smarmy.
-
I love Bill. Absolutely love him. But, she's no Bill.
-
I actually like Hillary more than I like Bill.

Dont worry, all of us here in Ohio are hellbent on ruining the country once more
-
Interesting article, but it actually makes me feel a little less confident in Obama's chances. If it comes down to the superdelegates, I think Clinton's gonna have the edge, due to being a Washington insider.
ANSWER MY PM
-
I actually like Hillary more than I like Bill.
Hilary seems so incredibly fake and un-charismatic.
But, I will absolutely vote for her if she wins the nomination. I want a democrat in the White House. Hopefully the majority of Clinton followers will do the same if Obama wins the nomination.
-
I think they both come off as fake, Bill's just better at hiding it.
-
Everyone I know back home (mostly blacks) are voting for Obama. I asked my mom who she was voting for and she said,"Obama." in a matter of fact tone as she chuckled deeply.
-
On CNN, Bill Bennett is being portrayed by George Wendt.

I think it is. My cousin who doesn't give a shit about politics asked me just last night: Obama or Hilary. A lot of the kids I knew back from High School who didn't vote in the 2004 election seem more interested in this election as well.

All is lost.

McCain is gonna win it, I swear. Obama's not gonna be the candidate because he's black and people are racist. Hillary's gonna lose the election 'cuz she's a woman and people are sexist.

A lot of my in-laws are Republicans, but love Obama and would vote for him. They would never vote for Hilary, though.

So apprently there's reports going around that people working some of the voting places tonight were telling people that they didn't have to come back for the caucus and that if they signed their name it would still be counted later in the night. Someone called Dem. party and apparently there's going to be some sort of investigation.
-
This thing's going to the convention. Or to a brokered nomination after the primaries but before the physical convention.
Don't undersell McCain, MAF. He's probably crazier than Bush about warmongering and he doesn't have a clue about economics (which is bad cause he'll be surrounded by Republican econ advisers and won't be able to tell when they're bullshitting him).
-
Told ya so

Just to clarify, I predict this would be all the time.
-
McCain gets this frenzied look in his eyes when anyone mentions war, it's like a little kid in a candy shop. The man loves bloodshed and exertion of American military force as a casual foreign policy tool, he's a total neoconservative in that regard and Dems would do well to remind the US public of that fact.
As for tonight-
I expect Ohio to tighten up a bit but Clinton to still win it tonight, no idea about Texas though, it's still really up in the air. I said Hillary in TX by 3 yesterday on GAF and it's looking somewhat possible.
Now it's down to April 22nd's Pennsylvania primary-this is sort of the armageddon scenario for the party, it's going to be Obama's charisma versus Hillary's scorched earth tactics and Philly machine influence. Fun to watch, but I wish this was over already.
-
even if texas is 52-48, wouldn't that still put obama in the lead?
-
I would like to dance in glee on your broken, bleeding librulll hearts, but I remember how distraught I was when Bush beat McCain in 2000.
See, I am a compassionate conservative.
-
I don't know if you're allowed to play the role of detached, ironic observer after giving your heart to a succession of moderate Republican great white hopes (McCain, Giuliani, Gingrich, Bloomberg).
-
If Sen. Hillary Clinton wins the Texas primary to keep her presidential campaign alive, she can thank Hispanics, who turned out heavily and voted 2-to-1 for the former first lady.

Triumph: Drink some warm milk and calm down. Shoehorning everything into the Establishment vs. Upstart narrative has you overestimating Hillary's chances and Obama's, um, upstartiness.

You thought Rudy's 12 point agenda was serious, nuanced policy! C'mon!

To Obama fans: Tonight you learned what Boston learned a month ago, and what they will learn again in May. Tonight you learned what 50 Cent learned in September. Tonight you learned what Sony learned last year, and what Nintendo will learn later this year. Only by pride cometh contention. Pride goeth before destruction.
Obama may yet still lock up the nomination, but tonight Hillary may have defeated his November chances. If he couldn't beat her with all the momentum in the world, how can he win when it matters? Hillary defeated him with two negative ads. How does he expect to contend in October if he cannot survive negative ads in March? Hillary ran a disgusting campaign, and I don't support that at all: but I'm a realist. She did Obama a favor by testing him, and tonight he gave us a glimpse of what could happen in the general election.
I'm not happy Obama failed tonight; he's a good man, and I don't like seeing good men fall flat on their face. Honestly I expected Obama to win Ohio at least. But I am happy that the swagger and arrogance is dead in his fans. The holy ghost is gone. The singing slaves by the campfire are now in darkness, their campfire blown out

Here it is. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=382018&postcount=1)
In the background, the projector clicked loudly. In the foreground, a man gets pushed away by a girl he's trying to get with, and he leaves. Somewhere between that float the particles that hit the screen, bounce back, and hit you square in the jaw.
Until this movie, I never realized the scope of some things. I never really remembered much about MacNamara other than a footnote of his position during Vietnam. I never thought this'd be something that would affect me.
...but then, I've violated his tenth rule time after time.
Now, I'm not good at long posts, so I'll condense this for both your and my sake. First off, seeing a man of his brilliance talk about his life as if it were his greatest accomplishment, and his worst crime...Every word he spoke, he had a look, a feel of regret to him. He saw it all, did it all. But in the end...well, you know how it goes.
The point is that this is a powerful film. Even the greatest of all time can be wrong. Even the most egotistical can have regret.
Watch it. You'll know what I mean.

That's gold, MAF. :lol

Hillary is trying to exact revenge for black males getting their rights before women. Unfortunately, she is more destined to lose than Obama was.
-
So I'm browsing CNN's Ohio exit polls, (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/#OHDEM) and I see that among people who considered race as "most important", she won by 59-40.
What sort of people admit this stuff to pollsters?

So many republicans in Ohio voted for Hillary today. :facepalm

The longer this nonsense goes on, the less likely it is for ANY Democrat to win come November. Didn't think the dems could possibly blow this election? STAY TUNED!
If they blew 2004, they could blow 2008.
-
Maybe, but I'd say it depends on how the campaign goes. If Hillary stays in attack mode and uses the same memes that McCain will (Obama's all show and no substance, he's not ready to be commander in chief of the armed forces, etc) and Obama's the nominee, that could hurt.
But otherwise you've got a motivated donor base and campaigns that are going full speed in terms of organization and recruitment, plus a much bigger share of national news coverage and local coverage in the few states that are left.
-
Finally Charles Foster McCain will get his due!
-

As I said on GAF, the longer the primaries go on, the more religious followers will get about their chosen candidates, and the more prominent the sour grapes will be when their candidate does not win the primary, which means regardless of who wins in the end, there will be a significant portion of the democratic base spurned, likely to not vote or care anymore at all.
If this drags on for another month, which is looking extremely likely, I will strongly doubt a democrat can win this election at all.
-
Democratic party LOL
I agree with TVC.

jesus fuck what a thing to wake up to

I still voted for Obama. But so many republicans suicide voted, it's crazy.
-
So I wasted two hours of my time last night... smh
-
So, Ohio and Texas can go suck my dick.
But that's okay, Obama still has the delegate lead.
-
I have a couple of thoughts to throw out...
If this thing comes down to Superdelegates and they go to the side of whomever is actually behind in popular vote or delegate count... will there be as much outcry from the Democratic party as there was in Gore/Bush election?
Also, without doing any real research...is it me or are elections more and more becoming...
Hispanic vote >>> all others
I know the popular sediment with the Bush wins was Evangelicals, but I believe he also won the hispanic vote by a decent majority. Which in those elections I believe could be looked at as the "swing" votes. The Hispanic vote is obviously becoming a major factor, and is the one group of voters that are growing exponentially every election. Which ever party can really firm up the Hispanic base, can really take a grip in future elections.
-
The thing is, unlike blacks and whites, hispanics will actually go to the polls.
They accounted for one-third (1/3!!!!!!!) of the votes in the greater Houston area last night. And to be honest, they're so fucking gullible. Most of them only watch spanish television news, and those few channels will all champion one person. In 2004, they championed Bush, now they're championing Clinton. It's amazing, because I know all these hispanics now who talk about Bush as the worst person ever and how he fucked them. YOU'RE DOING IT AGAIN YOU FUCKING MORONS! God, I spoke to some of them in line last night who didn't even know what the primaries were fucking for! The tv told them to vote because it would be good for them and their stupid fucking brown-pride movement.

Sadly, I'm not above voting like that, either. I have no problem crawling back into my apolitical hole for another 4 to 8 years if Hillary gets the nom.
-
yeah, I dunno if I could bring myself to vote for Hillary after the campaign she's been running
They really need to broker this out before next month. If this goes all the way to the convention, Dems are fucked total.
-
They're fucked no matter what. Race and gender has been an issue even amongst liberals at the polls, apparently. You really think America at large is going to vote a female or a black man into office over STRAIGHT TALK WAR HERO? Keep dreaming. Did we not forget how the dumb gay marriage fiasco helped Bush stay in office, just a few years ago?
I know for a lot of you, living on COAST CITIES, people being even subconsciously racist or sexist is hard to comprehend. I live in California, for Christ's sake. But the general election is more than just us and if you think America is "ready" (I fucking hate that term, because "we" should be "ready", it's just fucking backwards thinking) for either candidate... keep dreaming. Obama has the best chance with the fence sitters, though.

Having Harson, Stooge, et. al. freak out to the point that they were arguing over delegate counts before Texas results were even in was euphoria.
I will 100% vote for the Democrat this November, but when I see a liberal say they won't vote for Hillary and will instead vote for McCain (as opposed to not voting), my skin crawls.

Yeah, they should vote for my boy.

I voted and caucused yesterday in Austin.
I'm friends with the Republican precinct chairman who is also a huge Ron Paul supporter. Anyway, we head over to the school to caucus and when we get there we see a mob of people at the doorway to he cafeteria. We live in a very liberal hippy area so this was expected. The precinct chairman goes in, gets the packet to run the caucus and then comes out and makes a loud announcement to follow him for the republican caucus. Everyone laughs at him and then he says that it' ok we are all voting for Ron Paul, which was met with a few cheers and laughs.
Anyway, the 400 democrats had their caucus in the cafeteria while the 1 republicans had our caucus in the hallway. Our caucus consisted 7 young 20s college guys, a biker dude, a older fellow who brought his son and very well dressed woman who is an aid to the governor. Everything was underway after I did my duties as temporary secretary. I had to make sure everyone who was there voted. We started off by nominating and voting on delegates. We voted 5 Ron Paul supporters for delegates and then 3 for alternates. The next oder of business was voting on resolutions that will be sent to the higher ups to become official state of texas republican ideals.
We voted and passed the following resolutions.
1. End the federal income tax and replace it with nothing
2. Return to constitutional values to protect our liberty
3. Freedom of helathcare without government intervention.
4. Leave Iraq and take a non-interventionists foreign policy.
5. Free weed for everyone. (this made the older fellow ho brought his son kind of mad. He was a huckabee supporter.)
Then it came up that 8 of us were ron paul supporters which prompted the lady and th huckabee suporter to say "Well if i would have known that I wouldn't have voted for you." It didnt matter anyway cause we had majority 8-2.
Then after the caucus we went to the ron paul headquarters and drank some beer. I heard something about a second amendment party this weekend... I might try to go to that.

I will vote for the Democratic nominee (technically breaking my ranks), no matter what. I think it's a losing cause, but I'm not going to throw away my vote. There's always hope, I guess.
-
Willco: I think America is sort of ready for a female or black president, but with a metric ton of caveats.
There aren't a lot of people who are sexist/racist enough to completely rule out ever voting for someone with fallopian tubes/too much melanin. But there are a ton of people who would think Hillary is a bitch for being as assertive as the average male politician, or would see Obama at a rally with a 90% black audience and write him off as an ethnic candidate.
Hillary isn't allowed to yell. Can you imagine if she pulled an "I paid for this microphone!" moment? It'd be like the Dean scream for her.
Obama isn't allowed to say any attacks on him are racist, and generally has to soft-pedal issues of racial justice. When the Jena 6 story broke, Hillary and Edwards released statements specifically talking about black/white issues, while Obama talked about justice in general.
And a black candidate who used urban, black vernacular as much as Bush uses his hick dialect? Getouttahere.

I will vote for her if I have to, but I think Hilary is a losing cause, I still think Obama has a good chance of beating McCain.

I would rather not vote. But I have serious Hillary baggage issues that cannot be overcome. The sleazy campaign she's been running just adds to that feeling.
That, and, she is utterly unelectable. That just seems obvious to me, and has for the past year. I have no idea where this machine throwing its weight behind her comes from, because she's just a lost cause.

mmmmmm, yes I bet you love throwing your money at the government to pay for the war and the national debt.

It's funny, isn't it? In 2004 the Dems had a chance to nominate a candidate that would draw clear, stark contrasts to Bush and instead they nominated an annoying Frenchman. This time around they have a chance to nominate someone who can draw clear, stark contrasts with McCain and they seem intent on at best crippling him before the big fight in November, at worst nominating a shrill, nakedly power hungry former first lady with ridiculously high negatives.
And people wonder why I'm not a democrat...

Feel free to point out how stupid it is.

Maybe not, but I don't mind paying for other national programs.

Mandark - I don't think that's too much difference in what you said and when I spoke about folks being "subconsciously" racist and/or sexist. There are a ton of white folks that parade themselves as not racist ("I have a black friend!"), but they're the same folks who auto-lock their car when a black person walks by (I saw my mother do this once).
The other thing is that I think your view is a tad tainted by geography. Going to some backwater regions of this grand country has opened my eyes to a lot of ignorance. Hell, when my father took us on a family vacation that went through some parts of the eastern shore and mountainous part of Virginia (and West Virginia), we got stares because he and my stepmom are an interracial couple.
This was just four years ago.
I really do not think America has changed enough to welcome either Democratic candidate. Obama is the best bet, because with that "open-minded" middle of the road white voter, he could potentially win them over depending on how he runs his campaign. But like you said, he'd have to try real hard to tip toe that line.
-
...I was going to start pointing out how stupid that statement is, but then I remembered we had a thread for that already. This one is for real candidates and real issues.
Yes, a thread THAT SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF SHAME.
Shame on you, William Federwang.

You should know, amirite?
Racist.
-

No, she's your basic, upper middle class white female in 40-50 demographic. And if you don't think there's a ton of folks like her, you're in for a wicked surprise.
I think my generation is ready for a black or female president, but I don't think this generation has the guts or passion to really rally behind either candidate and push them ahead. We're too busy planning raids on Scientologists and playing WoW. Yes, I know the youth turnout has increased, but it could be a lot, lot more.
-

A good chunk (just over 50% if I remember correctly) DOES go towards the miltary, but the rest helps run the country. I'd rather see tax reforms instead of getting rid of it completely.
-
Reagan did a study in the 80s and found that over half of it just goes to pay for the interest on the national debt. Thats your tax dollars at work, paying for the interest on out debt.
-
I can see not voting (even though it may ultimately screw you), but voting for someone who is diametrically opposed to your political philosophy because Hillary is "dishonest" or (worse) "annoying" is outright stupid.
I know a shitton of "youths" who didn't vote for Kerry in 2004 because he didn't excite them or speak directly to kids. Now all they do is bitch about Alito and Roberts. They are going to be there for a VERY long time.
-
Willco: Yeah. I learned years ago that open racism wasn't just a relic documented in history textbooks. I've been to places where I've been an exotic minority because I'm Jewish (half-assed, light-skinned Jew that I am).
I think Obama's got himself in one of the two sweet spots for a black candidate. You can either be the young, accomplished, post-racial optimist or the steady, paternal authority type (Colin Powell, David Palmer).
Mayor Williams was sort of in the first group, although he was a lot more Carlton Banks than Obama is.
FoC: Get out of here with that shit. Reagan did a study? Come on!

I know, MAF. The problem is that these victories give Hillary a new lease on life, meaning she will be around for at least another month to rouse up her supporters even more and do more shady campaigning that will hurt the campaign of whomever gets the nom in the end. Even though, by the numbers, it appears impossible for her to win, that doesn't mean she won't be doing damage.
-
No I know all about that. She's not only working to kill our chance in the end game, she is killing her chance of another shot in 4 years.

All the gaffers in the Iraq threads saying how they hate the war, it's ruining our country, it has to stop now. Fast forward to the primaries, where Obama loses a few to Hillary.
"That's it! In November, I am voting McCain! Fuck Hillary!"
Maddening.

I wonder how that feels for the enlightened Obama supporter, to share ranks with the barbaric frat boys and fainting cultists that litter his campaign stops. It must make them pause for a minute.

Breaking News: GAF is full of shitheads.
Anyone surprised?

That would be th right tact. But yea, there were 3 or 4 in the huge political thread that say they will vote McCain if Hillary wins. They weren't the usual left-GAF .. they seemed like all political newbies.
I guess that could be a dangerous offshoot of Obama attracting all these new "non-voters". They may just vote against Hillary in November out of spite, if Obama never got in the race they probably wouldn't have voted at all.
-
Any successful product, including a campaign, will produce a large chunk of mouthbreathers who define their identity through allegiance to the brand. That goes double for young people.
Unless there's a chunk of the coalition that has some really rotten political beliefs and is big enough to make demands of the candidate, who cares? I got over the "People I don't rate like things I do rate" crisis after denis580 spammed GAF with Dynasty Warrior topics years ago.

You're forgetting the typical rallying cries, Toxic.
Hillary "has lied," will "do anything to win," "is dirty," "is not presidential," etc.

I think she's a power hungry liar and ideally I wouldn't like to see her in office. However, if it comes down to it, I'll back her.

I'm sorry, a politician should at least be able to hide it well. She's blatantly lied and been called out during her campaign. Most politicians can at least keep it hidden until they've actually won the Presidency.

Like when Obama lies regarding whether or not his campaign heads were lobbyists?

The solution to out of control government spending is to give them less money. Is that too hard for you to understand? Or do you like giving uncle sam 30% of YOUR earnings.
-
MY earnings? Are those from MY job? The one that I drive to on government-built roads in a car filled with government-subsidized gas, where the cafeteria serves government-subsized food, that doesn't kill me because a government agency over sees the quality? I know you think you're some kind of independent heroic ur-man, but pretending that your money is yours and yours alone is distinguished mentally-challenged.

Obama camp: What's Clinton hiding'
Posted: 02:40 PM ET
The Obama campaign is taking aim at Clinton over her tax returns.
(CNN) – Barack Obama's campaign took fresh aim at Hillary Clinton Wednesday for refusing to release her tax returns, asking in a memo circulated to reporters, "What does Clinton have to hide?"
"In the face of her unwillingness to release her tax returns, Hillary Clinton has made the false case in this campaign that she is more electable because she has been fully vetted," the memo stated. "When it comes to her personal finances, Senator Clinton’s refusal to release her taxes returns denies the media and the American people the opportunity to even begin that process."
David Axelrod, the Obama campaign's chief strategist, also said in a conference call with reporters Wednesday that Clinton has a history of non-disclosure and is the least-vetted candidate in the presidential race.
Clinton had said she will only release her tax returns if she captures the Democratic nomination, though her communications director, Howard Wolfson, issued a statement Wednesday indicating she would do so around April 15.
"Over 20 years of the Clintons' tax returns are in the public domain," he said. "Their tax returns since they left the White House will be made available on or around April 15. This information will be in addition to 15 years of uninterrupted public financial disclosure reports."
"Instead of making false attacks, we urge Senator Obama to release all relevant financial and other information related to indicted political fixer Tony Rezko," Wolfson also said.
Obama, who released his 2006 tax returns last April, stepped up his pressure on Clinton to release her documents early last month after it was revealed the New York senator loaned her campaign $5 million.
"I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from," he said. "I've disclosed my income tax returns. I think we set the bar in terms of transparency and disclosure that has been a consistent theme of my campaign and my career in politics.”
The New York senator did file a Senate disclosure form last May that revealed the Clinton's income for the previous year was upwards of $12 million. But, according to the Wall Street Journal, a tax return would present a more comprehensive account of the Clinton's income, and include revenue sources that aren't required on Senate disclosure forms.
"Though her campaign has tried to kick the issue down the road, Democratic voters deserve to know, right now, why it is she is hiding the information in her tax returns from last year," the Obama memo stated. "The Clinton campaign has said that they have released copious amounts of financial information but there are many questions about their private dealings that could be answered in their tax returns but not in the information that is currently available
-
So anyway, I would have rather McCain took the nomination in 2000 than in 2008.
Back when he was lobbing bombs at Robertson, Falwell, and BJU, a win would have been widely interpreted as weakening the Christian right. Sort of the opposite of the post-2004 election talk of "moral values" voters.
But now he's acting like they have to be accommodated, and even if he believes in his heart of hearts that they're wrong and hateful and intolerant they still have as much of a claim on the GOP as they did before. Though there seems to have been a shift away from the old guard of top-down leadership to a more networked, grassroots thing.
