Title: Is the PSP dead?

After Crisis Core, there is absolutely nothing on the reserve list for the system.  I thought it was selling well - what gives?

You've posted, and I'm not kidding, like a good portion of the games coming out for it ALL YEAR.  There isn't even anything on the list past October.  It's friggin' nuts.  I can't fathom a piece of hardware selling so well that gets absolutely no software support.  Himuro killed PSP. :-\

After Crisis Core, there is absolutely nothing on the reserve list for the system.  I thought it was selling well - what gives?

I heard the Bionic Commando PSN/XBLA/PC game was originally developed for the PSP.  Poor software sales drove the title to the downloadable services.

I was really looking forward to more capcom goodness when the mega man and ghouls and ghost games were announced three year ago.  Unfortunately, they bombed big time  :-\.  My head would explode if Mega Man Powered Up 2 were to be announced for anything.

Wilco, why do you guys(gamestop) tell people Wheelman is coming out early summer? Is there some secret Midway announcement coming?

No idea.

Himuro, Wipeout Pulse.  And as I said to demi, almost all those games listed are within the next two months.  The other half of your list hasn't even been announced for US release!  R-Type, Wipeout, Wild Arms, Secret Agent Clank and Space Invaders are the only ones on your list you can even pre-order.

I thought Hot Shots Golf: Portable 2, Star Ocean: First Departure, Echochrome, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, KOF-Collections: The Orochi Saga, SNK Arcade Classics were all announced for US release for this year? I mean, FF:D and Hot Shots Golf P2 haven't been announced but they're from popular series so they don't really need announcements for a confirmation.

No, but I know it's totally coming. I'm importing Umihara Kawase though. Along with some other import psp games.

Yes.  I've already been saying for a few weeks that the PSP will be dead soon.  Who's going to keep releasing PSP games when so few people buy them?  Unless God of War shows some significant improvements, everyone including Sony is just going to give up.  Still, it's been a fun ride.  Enjoy your free games while they last.

I was vehemently against downloading PSP games before but now I don't care anymore.  PSP's going to die regardless of what a few of us do.  No point in buying games for a dead system.  I'm going to get my fattie hacked once I'm done taking the board exams.

the PSP will be the first system killed by piracy.

The Dreamcast had many other contributing factors, but the only dang reason the PSP hasn't taken off like a rocket is because !EeT Ha><orS.

GOW and Crisis Core are probably the last major attempts at selling PSP games.  If these two don't sell well, I don't think we'll be seeing any more new projects for the PSP.

Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?
Post by: Smooth Groove on March 05, 2008, 11:14:17 PM
The PSP's inherently flawed design is a major reason why piracy is so commonplace.  Gamers are actually better off with pirated copies because they get better battery life and loading times by playing games off a memory stick.

At least on the PC, there are some advantages to owning legitimate copies, such as online play, not having to hassle with cracks, or being able to apply new patches .   PSPs are very easy to hack and their games are so quick and easy to download, that it really shouldn't be surprising that the majority of PSP owners choose to pirate.

Holy shit  :lol :lol

Still, even if you add them all up, you're seeing less than 50k sales go to piracy. I think people just don't want to buy PSP games.

And 40 is WAYYYYYY too expensive for handheld stuff. Even DS stuff isn't selling gangbusters at 35. FF12RW kinda bomba'd, as will Crystal Chronicles.
Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?

handhelds need to go online or use SUPER ENCRYPTED MEDIA to end piracy once and for all.

Dude, 40 is pushing it but still. I personally think that 20-30 is the ideal price for a handheld game and they should rise it above that.

Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on March 06, 2008, 01:34:48 AM
There were so many pre-order promotions for God of War and a ton of folks pre-ordered it ages when they thought it was coming out LAST year (placeholder dates lolz), that it's likely a good portion of folks simply forgot.  I really think I'm going to be stuck with a ridiculous amount of backstock.  Unlike Patapon, where we got like 10 reserves, but everyone picked up their copies.

I think God of War will do a decent amount of business, but the well looks extremely dry after Crisis Core.  There is literally nothing for us to recommend to customers to reserve afterwards in terms of a big, mainstream game.
Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on March 06, 2008, 01:36:28 AM
Personally, I was just wondering, because someone traded in one of those white PSP Slims in mint condition and was tempted to buy it used (with discount!) and pick up a copy of God of War since I have a long plane trip ahead of me.  But, I don't want to buy a PSP and not have anything to play for it in the near future.
Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?
Post by: Ichirou on March 06, 2008, 01:36:38 AM
Can't you call the people that pre-ordered?  I thought you usually took down people's number when they ordered something.
Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on March 06, 2008, 01:38:18 AM
The ARN calls all people who pre-ordered the game a day before its release.  It's that dumb "Hi, I'm Aeris from GameStop, calling to remind you that your copy of [enter game here] will be available for pick up at [enter time/date here]!" message that you get.
Title: Re: Is the PSP dead?
Post by: Ichirou on March 06, 2008, 01:42:12 AM
I've never gotten that message, but that's because I haven't pre-ordered a game since the PS1 days. :lol

At any rate, even if the PSP were to die tomorrow, you'd have a shitton of games to play.  I've put buckets of time into that little gadget - over 100 hours on Tales of the World alone.  I don't pirate shit either,
 ( :piss Himuro :piss2 )

and I already have 15 games plus like ten more I'll eventually buy.

i was super hyped and got a launch unit, but it just never materialized

whereas the psp was a great launch unit and continued to be good.  the launch games are still stellar.
same here.  the lineup is balls IMO

Yes, the h/w is selling VERY well

the software? not so much.

I wonder why  :lol
I DO wonder why, actually.  The library is extremely good.

there is your answer.
Ah, yes.  I had forgotten about the piracy.  :(  That's really pretty sad.  I mean, I do enjoy the homebrew scene on PSP and the fact that you can enhance many games via memstick loading and a higher clock speed, but it really has hurt the market.

PSP piracy is just too damn easy to pull off and it seems to have become common knowledge.

maybe sony should have went with a cartridge/flash or whatever media like the ds.

I remember the PSP launching with what I'd consider the best launch lineup in the history of gaming... Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure, Metal Gear Acid, some other games... but then for a good solid 8 months there was absolutely NOTHING coming out for it. DS had a horrible lineup, but by the middle of the first year, I'm like yeah this is gonna kick ass. The best days of the DS are still to come, DQ9 obviously being the killer app for the thing.

oh yeah, well, you can play old arcade games on PSP, does that count? no, it shouldn't, but PSP spin doctors always pull that shit

Darkstalkers
Street Fighter
Salamander
Parodius

not so hot anymore is it

looks like PSP fails, no wonder it sucks

"best" is arguable, since majority have the same functions - the flashcard scene is extremely saturated, so I just picked the one that has the best support

i use an M3 Real (formerly M3 Simply), which comes with a GBA cart (and Rumble Cart), that lets you play GBA games

I still think that slashing every PSP game by $15 would probably generate more revenue than keeping them at their current prices.

They would still be more expensive than "free".

Me either. But we've got PSP slims so they're a lot faster. I know that Wipeout Pure loads faster on my psp slim than it did on my original PSP, if just a tad.
