Need music suggestions? Pop in here!
I have been taking my Zune everywhere with me lately and I'm almost always listening to something. I want to branch out in the black music genres that aren't hip hop.
Eric P! I need yer help, bro!
I made a thread at gaf a while back for music suggestions but all they did was do that stupid list bullshit. I asked SPECIFICALLY for the bare essentials, you know, the stuff you NEED to listen to? Like you wouldn't suggest Gil Scott-Heron to someone interested in soul/r&b right off the bat. If you were wise you'd suggest The Temptations, or Stevie Wonder, or Marvin Gaye. You know...the ESSENTIALS. I'm tired of being a hip hop connoisseur. I want more music!!!
Anyways, I want to branch out and experience more reggae, r&b, and pop.
I'm not too knowledgeable on reggae although I love it. These are the guys I'm familiar with, mostly introduced to me through Grand Theft Auto series:
Scientist
King Tubby
Bob Marley
Black Harmony
Dennis Brown
UB40
I'd love to have more reggae on my Zune.
R&B, I'm familiar with of course, as R&B is essentially black people's country music except...you know...good.
These are my favorite essential R&B artists, but if I'm missing some suggest some please as long as it is good. It doesn't matter what kind of R&B, classic or modern.
Gil Scott-Heron
The Jackson 5
Stevie Wonder
Diana Ross
New Edition
Marvine Gaye
Erykah Badu
Lauryn Hill
The Temptations
New Edition
Usher
Tyrese
TLC
Boyz II Men
EnVogue
Da brat
Dru Hill
Whew that's enough for now.
Pop is another genre I'd be interested in experiencing more. Like, I love specifically 1960's era pop. I am a big fan of Burt Bacharach. The Look of Love is a fucking amazing song. This doesn't have to be exclusively 1960's pop, and no I do not mean rock either so don't go in here suggesting that shitty Beatles claptrap. I guess I'm fond 1960's - 1990's pop in general. It's the one genre where I know the song, but I just don't know the artist and I honestly don't know shit about this genre or where to start. Some bare essentials would be wonderful.

i can't help you out with the reggea or dub because neither of those genres really interest me.
i can however upload some Roots Rock/Ska, and it's really different from the ska you'd hear associated with the third wave (aka 90s ska).
you may also want to check out Go-Go. It's a genre which comes from DC that doesn't get much play outside the beltway.

I'm not terribly familiar with the genre, but it struck me that your reggae list is missing Peter Tosh, Augustus Pablo, Burning Spear, and The Congos, all of whom are essential reggae roots/dub musicians. These guys should be in everyone's library, regardless of specific taste.

Is TV On The Radio black enough for your musical taste?
