What are the necessary fonts any self-respecting man should own and cherish?

Comic Sans (for presentations on programming language theory, see e.g. here (http://lucacardelli.name/Slides/2007-08-02%20An%20Accidental%20Simula%20User%20(ECOOP%20Prize).pdf) (PDF), here (http://research.microsoft.com/~simonpj/papers/marktoberdorf/Marktoberdorf.ppt) (MS PowerPoint), here (http://conferences.oreillynet.com/presentations/os2007/os_peytonjones.pdf) (PDF))
Computer Modern Roman (for everything else)
That's all.

Anything and everything designed by Adrian Frutiger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Frutiger), typographer of the forever.

I learned my Swiss designer friends are buddies with Frutiger tvc. They have a bunch of original woodblocks he did in their office.

. . . Too easy.
-
You need to find Optima and Futura. You should already have Tahoma and Verdana, which are decent enough approximations of Frutiger, and plenty of good serif fonts packed in with your OS. Font whores will pop their monacles, but the real deal isn't necessary.
-
I don't understand half the words you just said. Words are words. As long is it's not pink with hearts in place of periods it's fine.
-
Particular fonts have particular application, PD. Incorrect usage might be fine in an informal setting, but formal writing should always use something appropriate. Getting into the different styles might seem a bit nuanced and extraneous, but a well-chosen font goes a long way in enhancing the presentation of a document.
-
Fonts are like clothing for your words. If you use Arial or TNR you like 98% of the fuckers out there. If you use Comic Sans you buy your clothes from those stores that sell $2 joke shirts that only tweens/fobs/red necks find funny.

monotype sorts

It's probably the case that you don't notice the use of fonts because they feel natural. If you looked at something that had bad fonts you would better realise the role of good fonts.
-
Granted I can understand why an unprofessional font wouldn't be ideal in a professional work setting, but when it comes to internet nonsense I don't get the fervent love/hate of various fonts. WHO CARES

Because font fetishists tend to be easily riled assholes.

Would you really use an uncommon font for like a presentation or a resume or something? I've always been afraid to use anything but Arial or TNR for stuff like that. [Except for headings, of course.]
