It's for real. It's known as 'ikizukuri'.
As Kurt said, 'it's ok to eat fish, they don't have any feelings'
edit: watched the vid - that's actually pretty tame. try this:

When I go salmon fishing, its not uncommon at all for the tenacious effers to be twitching in the cooler for quite some time after they've been drug out of the water and their skull has already had an appointment with a billyclub.
the way I see it, the harder the sea creature fights to survive, the more delicious it is. That's why crabs and lobsters taste so good, those bastards go down fighting.

For some reason, that doesn't really surprise me. Something about the fish going back into the water with half its body gone.... ???

Yes, this is real. Another thing I've seen is, they put a bowl with water and blocks of tofu with small fish in it and start boiling it. The fish freak out and start moving in and out of the tofu. You pick up the tofu chunks with still-living fish in it and eat 'em. It's supposed to feel very pleasant wriggling down your throat, like you're being tickled.
:yuck

Still living fish carcass. I actually saw this in a TV show once, the female host was on location with some chef and he showed her the dish with the cut-up fish, and you could see it still breathing. And meanwhile the female host is going "Ohhh, oishi sou..." (It looks delicious)

The Japanese are the only people I've seen at aquariums commenting on how tasty the fish or other aquatic life look.

hahahah, I've noticed that too. :lol
