Title: Windows XP Vs. Vista
Post by: bork on March 09, 2008, 06:30:35 AM
So I just got a new MacBook and I'm looking to buy a copy of Windows for dual booting.  There's only a few things I really will need Windows for, and the rest is just for some light gaming (mainly emulators).  I'd really just like to stick with XP, but would Vista also be adequate for this purpose?  I've heard so many vomit-inducing stories about Vista that I don't know what to do.  A friend told me that my computer is probably powerful enough to handle Vista without any real headaches, but I don't know.

XP is still the champ, then?

march 20, vista sp1.

time to move on.

But I would only be using Windows sparingly.  Move on?  I did that...I moved right onto the better Mac OS X.   :D

Is Vista a big resource hog?  Would my 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, 2gb RAM MacBook run it just fine?  And are most of the issues worked out with SP1?  I'm still undecided, but I mean Patel did say "XP" three times, so that's gotta mean XP is still the shit.

Am I reading that MS page wrong, or does Vista take 15gb of space to install?  That's a bit much since I only want to give Windows around 32gb or so of space.

vista is fine, if you have issues with 15 gigs of space you need a bigger drive, honestly lulz. I use both vista and XP at work, and going back to XP feels so ghetto

In case you missed it, ME AM HAVE MACBOOK.  I want to give Windows only a little space; I don't need it for much.  Plus I believe I can only have 32gb of space max if I want to use a FAT32 style partition and transfer data back and forth between Windows and OSX easily.

Now that I'm back with OSX, going back to anything Windows feels ultra-crunk broken-down ass ghetto lolz lolz

I have re-joined the superior Cult Of Jobs.  My PC is almost completely cleaned off and ready to be TOSSED ASIDE.

One advantage of getting Vista would be that I could buy a Japanese copy.  XP doesn't contain multiple languages, but Vista does.  But in the end I think XP will serve my needs fine.  Plus I think some of the smaller apps I want to use don't support Vista yet anyway.

No, not the Asian language support.  Of course I know about that!  I'm talking about the language on the OS itself.  The OEM copy of Windows XP I got with my PC has multiple languages for example, but standard copies of Windows XP sold in Japan are in Japanese language ONLY.  I know I can get by, but if I had to do anything slightly complicated, it would be a real pain in the ass trying to figure out what does what.

Just having to do multiple reinstalls of Windows should be enough of a reason to want to switch!   :lol

I'm about to Downconvert

Vista keeps disconnecting my Seagate External HDD and when it does that it removes the shell link to my Music folder, which fucks with itunes which causes a big headache

update bios, drivers and vista (SP1?).

did you do all of that?

THe BIOS should be fine and drivers but I didn't install Vista SP1. Vista SP1 RTM is already out?

Even then, I'm going to stick with XP until I upgrade to a Dual Core Intel Mainboard

well, it should be out on 20 of march.

but since you are already a vista user maybe the sp1 upgrade is offered via windows update already? dunno lol.

another thing you can try is to use another usb cable or another port, and if you are using a multi usb hub then try not using it.

Went through all the diagnostic stuff for USB stuff, it was always the same thing :-\

It seems like Vista has issues with certain Ethernet devices and USB connectors for certain mainboards. I know its not the External HDD because it works flawlessly with Windows XP (Vista keeps asking me to scan the harddrive, format it, then it works and then it automatically disconnects). Blargh

weird, no vista support here and the latest bios is 2.30, install it if you haven't already.

better to stick with xp i guess, if only xp sp3 was out already.
