:o

The funny thing is that despite being in all Biggie's videos and seeming like his DJ, Diddy didn't produce much of anything on Ready to Die except the intro and skits; iirc Wiki credits him for a couple songs but in reality The Hitmen did all his stuff.

In other news, if these 90's music icon death memorandum threads are going to be allowed, you better be prepared for the Kurt Cobain thread next month!

Then we should also have a thread for Billy Corgan. He may not have died in the '90's, but his career sure did.

Too bad youtube took down the video talking about how E-40 could have had Biggie's limo lit the fuck up in Cali, but he stopped the hit at the last minute  :lol

While wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment, it just won't be any fun without Diablos.

You don't like Ready to Die? I'm not a fan of his second album, but RoD is one of the great east coast rap albums of the 90s. I'm not saying it's Illmatic or OBFCL but it's damn good

Who are some of the greatest rappers to you sir?

They gave Madvillainy a 9.4 and Vaudeville Villain a 9.1 so I can't hate too much (although I'd probably switch the scores)

HATERZ

Ready to Die rules. Life after Death is meh

Ready to Die=hunger
Life After Death=complacency and flash

Granted it has classic joints on it  but overall it's so fucking disjointed. Ready to Die isn't a concept album per se but the album fits together perfectly.

Sucks because Biggie wanted his third album to be a total 180, with no singles (and no Diddy) or flashy shit. I heard that a few songs were done for it but they were lost.

speaking of pitchfork

Quote
There's no exaggeration made when you hear someone referring to Metal Face as one of the best writers in rap: "Modern Day Mugging" has Doom turning a tired theme like, well, robbing people from a ghetto clich into a comedic spectacle, delivering a how-to for all aspiring thugs and thugettes: He only carries a .45 with "no bullets, no clip" that has "black electrical tape over the hole in the handle" but still manages to cause a fellow citizen to "run his chain like an errand." After detailing clever break-in methods, he plays the fall guy, getting shot by one of his elderly victims and claiming that he "woulda let her have it if he had the ammo."

Since any kind of fan or hip hop or rap can go die if they don't at least respect what BIG could do, I have to say he will be missed.

Personally, however, I'm not a big fan at all. East Coast just doesn't do it for me. Their lyrics are too serious.

i was going to try to take a picture of my cubicle wall which has Kehinde Wiley's portraits of LL Cool J, Ice T and David Scheinbaum's picture of KRS-1, but my cell camera is too crap and i left my usb cable for my camera at home.  I'll take the shot then post it online.

my own preference for rap is pretty much the 80s.  I lost interest in most rap when most white boys my age jumped in (with the release of The Chronic).  Watching that horrible G-Funk sound permeate hip hop for the next several years was just depressing because rap ceased to be fun and it became about serious hard men talking about serious hard things and it just cycled out of control into the horrible shit we have today like fiddy.

edit: to give an idea of how big these Kehinde portraits are
