This movie is pretty fuckin' awesome.  I think I have a mancrush on Casey Affleck.  He is so dreamy <3  And I guess this movie also counts as penance for at least some of Ben's crimes against cinema.

I agree that she doesn't deserve to have the kid; but it's a bit rough to not even let her know whether the kid is alive or dead. Also, as a recent parent, I have a very hard time with the idea that someone else could just decide that they were more fit to raise my child than I was and take her from me. Then again, in this case, Social Services might end up doing just that in a few years anyway. My head was spinning for hours after the ending...

When you have a child in that kind of environment and neglect it as she obviously did, I think she loses all rights and I lose all respect for her as a parent.  I know how you feel about "if that was my child" because I'd die not knowing that.  But as an irresponsible mother, I think she made it clear that she didn't care that much in the first place and in that case my thinking not only goes for the child first but only for the child.  I stop giving a shit about how the parent feels.  She had her chance and she blew it.  It was clear recorded fact in the movie that she was negligent and a horrible parent and put the child in danger.  Fuck her.  I loved thinking about it after the movie ended.  It's impossible not to discuss.

Yeah. And it made it very clear that the kid was also going to grow up to be a crackwhore who abused/neglected her own kids too. At some point, extreme measures are necessary to break that kind of destructive cycle I guess. You have to wonder what would have happened if they'd just gone to the mother and said 'let us adopt your kid'. She obviously loved the attention she got when her kid was missing but that was about the extent of her emotional involvement in the situation.

Completely.  She just seemed like she was happy to be the star of the moment and might get something out of it as well.  They could have gone about it a different way, but if we're discussing the end, not the means, I believe it was the right thing.

I JUST finished watching this and, well, I continue to be eluded by EvilBore's taste in movies. It was complete trash. The writing, acting, plot, sound, video, every single aspect of this film was either sub-par or absolutely terrible. What the hell, guys? Please, tell me what I'm supposed to enjoy about Gone Baby Gone.

I grabbed Assassination of Jesse James as well, so I'm going to give that a shot, but Gone Baby Gone was just...wow. Wow. I could say somethings that would probably start the Holy Wars about the film, but I'd rather not.

Sure, we all liked an incredibly well rated movie--we must be the ones that are wrong here.

What was so bad about the plot?  Its really damn rare that I see any movie anymore that surprises me while still playing fair (IE, is not a surreal mindfuck).  Gone Baby Gone had one of the tightest plots of recent memory.

I don't think EvilBore is wrong. I'd like to avoid the flame wars, but really I just didn't enjoy Gone Baby Gone.

The fact that you could see the twist coming from miles away as soon as the first presented conflict is over and done with half way into the film. The pacing confused the shit out of me, and made the movie much harder to stomach. I'm all for unoriginal plots, I mean what's original anymore? But that's not what bugged me. The plot was just drew on for too long in too many different directions. They set you up for one cliche, and then it turns out to be another. It's possible the movie was overhyped for me, but you guys make it sound like the movie can hold its own against hype.

Seriously, what can be good about a movie that has the line "I feel like 9/11 right now!"?

I enjoyed Iron Man, but I don't understand the amount of white-hot comic book movie passion it's been getting.

I guess Raban values the twist over execution.  I can see that.  But I just like how everything progressed and was eventually laid out.  To be honest, I think it was best that you could see where it was going because you watched it all come to a head at the very end where it was neatly laid out for you in a fashion that made you think about the ending and validity of their actions.

Indeed. His portrayal of Robert Ford is truly one of the creepiest/wormiest characters that I can remember in recent years.

But I didn't really like the film. The plot twist reminded me alot of the film NARC with Ray Liotta, and the Casey Affleck's character was almost too benevolent to be believed.

No I mean, even a boring plot could make an engaging movie if the execution was done right, but from what I saw, man, nothing was done right. The camera was boring, the writing was teetering on cringe-worthy (seriously, "I feel like 9/11 right now", wtf?), the acting was so/so, especially for people like Casey Affleck and Morgan Freeman, who have done so much better in their past films, especially Freeman. I can forgive a shitty plot if its presented well, but Gone Baby Gone didn't even bother justifying anything. The on-again off-again voice over was annoying as well, as the movie would've flowed much better had we been in Casey's head the whole film.

Also, some of the set choices were completely absurd. When it comes to a from-scratch screenplay, you have a lot of freedom concerning stuff like where things take place, and one of the final scenes that took place in Freeman's front yard was too awkward for me to handle. Heavy plot elements aren't delivered well when the characters are standing out in the front yard of a summer cabin staring each other down. The revelation taking place in that set just didn't make much sense to me.

As far as the progression of the film, the pacing fucked that up for me. The movie couldn't decide when to run and when to walk, and when it finally does pick up, it lasts maybe 10 seconds before the scene is cut short with a collage of short clips to explain something they could've explained by following through with the sped up pacing rather than using the awkward method in the film, which ultimately gave me a case of blue balls.

The moral ambiguity and some of the plot points are good stuff, but the execution is actually what I was bothered by. Also, the color theme of the movie was extremely distinguished mentally-challenged. Scenes would go from dark and grainy Fight Club to glare-tastic Michael Bay, to washed out The Departed.
