Marlon is pretty good in that movie, actually.  You get to see him fuck.

Also, Marlon isn't really in it a whole lot.  It's a supporting role.

and Jared Leto is fuck hot in that movie.  Too bad his band sucks ass.

TVC TRIVIA: you know how certain scenes are sped up real fast to get through certain instances, like a party or drug session? This happens in A Clockwork Orange as well; was that the first film to use that type of technique?

I dunno, that's probably been around since the silent era when people were still figuring out speeds.  I can't think of an earliest source, but there's speed fuckery in Harry Lloyd and Chaplin movies and I think the Keystone Cops flicks.

It's kind of corny, but it was OMG awesome when I was like 19-21 and still watched Taxi Driver like every day.

Actually, I guess it's kind of like The Fountain in that regard:  it's kinda obvious and dumb and overblown, but it's got great visuals, a great soundtrack, and pretty good performances.

How far in are you?  What is happening?  Wait til you meet BIG TIM.

I'm an hour in. And yeah, it's pretty obvious. But it's obvious in a rather interesting way artistically, with lots of visual metaphors instead of corny monologues

Jennifer just sold her body to her old shrink :(

Halo 3 would have been almost okay if the Arbiter did the things his character in Requiem does.

Good movie, not great/amazing. But I do think it was a great look at addiction, as well as the mindset behind it. Instant gratification . I've always felt that I'd be really fucked if I ever got hooked on drugs because I have a problem with moderation. I can't just have one glass of Sunny D, I need 2 or 3; and an hour later I'm already thinking about pouring another glass. That seemed to be the root of the film to me, with everything else being built on top. Also, the loss of hope and the craving of love seemed to be themes. Each character starts with a dream but never achieves it, instead winding up in a crippled (fetal) position. Also each character seeks love and acceptance, either from others or lost loved ones.

Yet this root of disarray and hopelessness is covered by a facade of content and normality, a happy face for those around you. I've lived a lie before, and basically am right now; it eats at you but you still find a way to numb it, pushing it below hoping it won't immediately resurface. There's a powerful scene in the film where Harry's mom is trying to explain her situation and addiction to the television, admitting it's what gets her up every day. It's a vicious cycle: she wakes up everyday hoping for the change then faces the disappointment of reality that nothing has changed by looking forward to tomorrow, over and over again until her weak grip on reality falters.

I really was impressed by Ellen Burstyn's performance here. And yeah, Waynan's performance wasn't bad at all. I was concerned initially. The guy with the sad eyes was great too, and plus Jennifer Connolley was showing bush, ass, and giving blowjobs. Oscar winning performance, and give her an AVN award too omg

The film is extremely metaphorical and uses various visuals to display them, such as surrealistic dreams. While they were rather obvious I thought they were still well done due to the presentation. And speaking of presentation, technically this is a great movie. The edited was great, especially the quick montage edits during the various addiction consumption scenes. Also it seemed like the camera displayed emotion just as much as it showed it. Various scenes featured hectic, out of control shots to help convey the insanity of what was going on; that goes back to the obvious nature of everything. The score and sound also contributed to this as it deteriorated throughout the film until all that was left was a jumbled mess of strings.

Overall it's a good movie and does a lot of fascinating things but some things felt rushed to me, especially with regard to the drug dealing arc.

8/10

plus, finally I have an excuse to be a good business student. I want to go to one of those parties  :-\

Ellen Burstyn should have won the Academy Award that year.  You know who did win it?  Julia fucking Roberts.

Gay. I've read a lot of good things about Erin Brockovich but it sounds boring to me. I doubt Julia's performance was more nuanced or varied than Burstyn's. That scene I mentioned almost made me cry  :'(

I guess Erin Brockovich won because it's so true to women in real life, getting by on nothing else but their tits.

Just finished watching it. I wasn't too keen on in really, I didn't like how drugs were cool at the beginning and then they started to suck. The most shocking thing about the movie is Marlon Wayans is a pretty good actor in this. I wonder why he didn't keep with it.

Uhhh...what

Drugs weren't "cool" in the beginning. The film portrays the decline of people due to addiction, not necessarily drugs. The best example of this was the mother, who was able to get her energetic high off one pill at a time initially, but wound up taking multiple pills once her body stopped reacting

didn't every character achieve their dream, atleast for a short period?  ellen burstyn fit into her dress, marlon waynan became a successful drug dealer, and jennifer connelley got to make it with another girl in front of a group of gentlemen, seems like they all achieved what theys set out to do.

particlereality try alice in wonderland, afterwards you can dress up like the madhatter and annoy the shit out of everyone at the mall.

Drugs weren't "cool" in the beginning.

They were in a way. Harry and Tyrone got all that money and were living a good life thanks to drugs. Then it all turned sour for them, which I didn't like at all.

Scarface.

Tony Montana lost everything to drugs, try again.

During that glorious summer, yes. But as their addictions grow the success and hope die in fall, until each character is left broken by winter
