Title: Why is Culdcept Saga so hard?
Post by: GilloD on March 22, 2008, 07:16:23 PM
Those first three levels are pretty okay. The learning curve is obscene and the complete lack of a cogent tutorial is nitty, but I picked it up pretty quick and the finer points came in some trial and error.

Then you hit level 4 and it's like the ghost of Bobby motherfucking Fisher showed up in the machine and a po' ass mothafucka can't catch a break for shit. I haven't wanted to toss a controller across the room like this since the NES was around. Fuck you, Culdcept.

It only took me 7 hours to put it back in the Gamefly envelope. I can't remember the last time a game made me this miserable.

maybe strategy isn't your thing if you can't even put a game back in the envelope...

The manual pretty much covers everything (I know, I know, you only rented).

None of the single player levels are staggeringly hard.  Some of them (the neutral level where the chibi character throws out all those Attacks First cards and all the elemental levels) have a very specific challenge so they can be impossible or automatic depending on whether you've got counters.

What I wanna know is why you can't browse your opponents' hands.  They let you see the hand for a couple seconds when they draw, so it's not like it's a secret, but they don't let you check at your leisure.

Quick recognition of cards based on their pictures shouldn't be one of the skills the game tests.

Otherwise, awesome game.

I didn't find it the hard (sometimes the CPU cheats you though  :-\ ) but I have trouble playing more than one match at a time. I might play one or two 1.5 to 2 hour matches a week, but that's about all I can handle. I can't just sit down and play it for hours on end.
