Stolen from that other forum. Apparently Microsoft is cutting back on arcade ports for their service. Hopefully Samurai Shodown 2 doesn't get booted for being an arcade port.
In a recent issue of Japan's Famitsu Xbox magazine was an interview with Masaki Sakari of 5pb - who are currently porting over two very popular Cave top down shooters Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label X and Ketsui X to the Xbox 360 as a retail product. In the interview Sakari has a short vent about why they went for a retail product:
"Out initial plan was to port lots of good arcade titles to XBLA. We talked to IP holders of these titles, and persuaded them. We secured these licenses, and finally talked with Microsoft. There they rejected all of our proposals saying, 'We are going to cut down faithful arcade ports.' We felt so frustrated. We wanted to show them that their decision was wrong. So we switched our two most promising projects into retail."

that about wraps it up for XBLA
-
lol @ paying for roms
-
:piss microsoft :piss2
i would announce a manabyte-style boycott of 360 games, but there aren't any 360 games left to boycott
-
On the plus side, at least you can still play your game if your 360 melts
-
Yep! Time to jump on the 3DO bandwagon. I heard they had an excellent port of Samurai Shodown and some innovative control scheme where the second controller plugs into the first. I guess if you start loosing you can always use the "unplug attack" to paralyze the other player.
-
Well, I'd certainly rather pay $60 for these at retail instead of paying $10 for Arcade games on Xbox Live Arcade. SMH Microsoft.
-
what a bunch of feggits.
-
easy money is too easy?
-
there's been pressure from the folks making original content -- western and eastern alike -- to make xbla cut back on the flat-port rom competition. the complaint is that the sales of straight ports like golden axe and tmnt are taking away from dollars folks would spend on, say, 3d miniature golf, which seems pretty disingenuous.
-
If their game sux they shouldnt cry when a game that did more with less years ago sells better.

I can understand if Microsoft doesn't want to run away all the original content developers and turn XBLA into rom dumping ground, but still people clearly have shown that they want at least some arcade roms. They can't just say "Oh sorry, consumer. You're buying too much of this, we're going to take it away and try to force you to buy this other thing instead." I don't care want Jeff Minter think, if you take away Frogger, people still aren't going to buy Space Giraffe.
-
Good games are taking sales from shitty games, as it should be. There are DEMOS if the DEMO sucks, your game probably sucks tooo.
-
so now it's a retail product? like raiden fighters?
hmm...there is something fishy about XBLA or maybe they are getting too arrogant.
-
Wait, why the fucking fuck is it called Xbox Live ARCADE, then? Kinda defeats the purpose... :maf
-
MS needs to keep their hands out of the fucking process. Who cares what games go up, just get them up.
-
look on the bright side, maybe this will make lazy fucks develop re-makes instead of straight ports.
still fucking distinguished mentally-challenged nonetheless.
-
yes
enough of this oversight!
let the market decide!

I want ports to sell shitloads so it encourages lazy ass developers to make good original titles. not shovelware shit
-
That's a good excuse, but no this isn't the reason they rejected it.
:shh cohen knows all.
pm me dood
-
Me too

Just a semantic detail, but from the way it's worded it could be that MS is requiring that old ports atleast get a face lift, like Pacman CE/Bionic Commando/1942/SSFIIT? I'm not a fan of straight rom dumps.

that's what shard and some other gaffers say.
but isn't sonic just a rom dump?
-
I couldn't say because I didn't try it. I assumed it was and it didn't interest me. If so, then yes, that would be an inconsistency.
-
well, sega xbla games all have the same features/interface if i am not mistaken, leader boards, filter, stretch screen and online coop if available.
perhaps this is a new policy? hmm...
-
Sega games are straight ROM dumps, I have Sonic 2. Those came out a long ass time ago though.
-
Microsoft is like the Awesome Mom that buys her kid all the cool shit and then reads in the newspaper that it causes brain cancer and starts restricting it for no good reason.
MS has created the greatest gamer's paradise this generation, but they make so many distinguished mentally-challenged decisions in caring for their "ecosystem" that you have to wonder if Sony and Nintendo being such fuckwads is a coincidence or is there something in the water :\
