I've found personally I'm so much different from the majority of all of the other gamers out there. I'll buy a game, and specifically try to be as efficient as possible in it, while spending a lot of time and calculating a ton of things in it. I attempt to be the "first" with certain things in games like WoW or PSU (although I can't anymore because of school/work).
Other people will just buy a lot of different games and play through them alone for fun. I don't see how a normal RPG can be entertaining alone anymore. The only reason I've even played a single player game is because I'm playing it with Catz or because it's part of a series I loved when I was younger (Final Fantasy, Metroid, Mario). And even then I don't really even play them. It almost feels like when I play them I simply accomplish nothing. Like a "What do I have to show for on that?"
I see posts about all these different games coming out and all these different reviews of how much people liked them... and I just think "what's the point?" Especially in a game like Disgaea. You'll never get the chance to play it online with someone else to show them the time/effort/ability you put into it, so you have to be self satisfied to play that much on it.
I understand that an online game is just as much of a waste of time as an offline game.... so I can understand how my statement may seem flawed.... but I'm just wondering.... what do YOU get out of gaming? stress relief? fun? getting your mind off of other things? addicted? love being around others that play it?

Games are simple fun pass time. I enjoy it a lot as a hobby but it isn't something like film/music/novels that I admire as a part of culture and life.

I've been doing it since I was very young it's simply an enjoyable hobby.
And even as I get older my style of gaming has remained largely the same.
I miss the old school platformers and shooters though

eh I guess it's just something to pass the time, and something I became interested in as a child.
Although I can admit the hobby is without a doubt reaching its limits, hopefully the next gen can spur some interest back into it.

I buy games to fill the nothingness that is my life. I barely even play them anymore.
Guitar Hero II will change that.

'Cuz let's be serious, video games are pretty fucking dumb and shallow. Like a step above collecting action figures as a hobby. But that's also what makes them so appealing, they're a break from the crushing seriousness of everything else.

Because I get to experience and do things I other wise cannot do in real life. To me, it's the ultimate form of entertainment. It's got the music, the art, the movie like quality, and all of this with the interactivity. I know it's a minority opinion, but I get more from games than I do from music or movies.
For example, the reason I love rpgs, is because I get to go on adventures and do things in the games that I could only dream about. It's a magical feeling for me. I'm sure everyone else doesn't agree with that..

I've boiled it down to this.
You know when your character saves up enough monies to buy THAT sword? The feeling of buying that sword than getting to test it out on bad guys that used to give you trouble, then you kill them without a sweat.
THAT feeling is why I game. "What's next?"

technology, I think I enjoy messing around with the newest stuff more than anything else. Video games always wow me.
