Is there a reason to install it? I kinda want to play with it now that I have large american penis-sized hard drive. What distro do I use. Tell me.
-
How big and what RPM? Are load times faster than what you get with the stock HD?

250 gigs. I forget the RPM. I was told RPM isn't important with the PS3 because it has a constrained read speed or something of the like.

ive tried it, its pretty decent. using Firefox on the ps3 is tons better than the built in ps3 browser
I used kubuntu, which I also now have on my laptop, its interesting to mess around with
back when i tried it had very limited video ram access, something they have supposedly allowed more of lately, so watching videos might not suck as much and maybe plays HD now. Definitely get VLC media player, it rox

What resolution do they limit you to? I use my PS3 to check e-mail or EB sometimes.

ah well I believe you can output to the many video resolutions the ps3 allows, even 1080p, mine was something like that
you have to edit a certain file to get them to work tho, something to Google before installing, definitely
google "ps3videomode"
it might be all streamlined and easy to do now, this was half a year back or so

Running linux on PS3!
-
i installed ubuntu 7.10 on it last night, and well... it's pretty much garbage. at the very least it looks great in 1080p and firefox runs decently with it. but it does feel like a late 90s PC at best -- don't expect the CELL to make a difference. sony blocked all video acceleration at this point, so it's not a good media player at all. no good flash and java support either. i'm very disappointed. at least i've got a backup browser in case one of my 4 other computers die. :lol
i'm hoping it gets better down the road, but i doubt it, especially if sony is blocking out access to some of the key hardware. :gloomy

There's not much you can do with 256mb of ram anyway since most programs aren't optimized for systems with such little ram.
I don't even play games on my 512mb labtop and it still feels slow as molasses.
-
thats pretty much what it is, a web browser/torrent machine

:gloomy
why the spiel about the PS3 being some kind of supercomputer when it can't even run linux decently.
-
My Linux desktop has 256MB. It runs semi-ok. 512MB definitely seems standard these days though, it's what my laptop has and makes it significantly nicer.
