I haven't watched anime since... Dec 2006?

I got halfway through Eureka Seven (last thing I watched), it was a really fantastic show, shame I couldn't stomach my way through the rest of it. I thought the English dub was really well done.

Jungle Emperor Leo
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 11:30 am, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

Adapted from a manga comic by the legendary Osamu Tezuka, this charming fable directed by Yoshio Takeuchi is a treat for animal lovers of all ages. Leo, a majestic white lion, rules the jungle at the foot of mysterious Moon Mountain, living in harmony with the other beasts – until humans show up and threaten to shatter their peaceful existence. 1997 / 100 min., Rated PG, Dubbed in English.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

      Atagoal: Cat’s Magical Forest
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 2:30 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

Hideyoshi is, literally, a fat cat who loves nothing more than gorging himself on tuna and rocking out at the annual town festival in the magical land of Atagoal. He gets into trouble, however, when he accidentally releases the imprisoned Botanical Queen Pileah, who has sinister plans for Hideyoshi and his feline friends. Mizuho Nishikubo’s film is fun for the whole family. 2006 / 81 min., suitable for all ages, Japanese with English subtitles.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

5 Centimeters per Second
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 5:00 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

The title of Makoto Shinkai’s wistful coming-of-age film describes the velocity at which cherry blossom petals fall – a metaphor for the impermanence of human relationships that is the theme of its three connected stories. Each story takes place at a different point in the lives of the film’s three main characters, from puppy love thwarted by a family move, to an unrequited teenage crush, to melancholy reminiscences in adulthood. 2007 / 62 min., unrated, appropriate for all ages. Japanese with English subtitles.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

Appleseed: Ex Machina
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 7:00 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

The year is 2138. Society is divided between humans and peaceful cyborgs developed to prevent the wars that killed half of the world’s population. But what happens when nefarious forces find a way to make them violent? Inspired by a popular manga comic, Shinji Aramaki’s sci-fi braintwister offers state-of-the-art animation, thrilling action scenes, and a provocative meditation on what our world might become. 2007 / 105 min., PG-13, Japanese with English subtitles.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

I'm picking away at Oh! Edo Rocket, GITS: SAC, and Denno Coil.  Haven't watched too much anime lately. It's been Twin Peaks and LOST instead.

Appleseed Ex Machina was like Woo gave Aramaki a half-grin and said "You've seen all my movies. You know what to do." And then Aramaki took that and mixed it with his usual Bubblegum Crisis routine.  I dunno. It was inoffensive, but I didn't like how they portrayed

You should watch Woman in the Dunes which, along with the book, is a must for any serious japafag.

I read the book of this but somehow didn't know there was a movie

Did they ever make a Box Man movie?

So good.

Just got finished watching that a few days ago. I liked the first series better, but GITS is all good.

I'm currently involved in:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Strawberry Panic
Speed Grapher

And I need to start Full Metal Panic but I haven't got around to it yet.

if you want to get into FMP i suggest watching Fumoffu first. It is better in every way possible. After that check out the mostly average first series Full Metal Panic, and finally, Second Raid. Which is apparently the first FMP done right.

I watched Evangelion at the height of Evangelion fever in 1999-2000 and thought it was soooo overhyped. Good show, but not NEARLY as good as others say. Most overrated anime...really, EVER.

I think GitS: SAC is best when watched dubbed. When you watch it subbed there's so many phrases and shit and you have to understand and contain all of that information in a short while. It flows best when watched dubbed imo.

Are you fucking kidding me?! Not that I should be surprised considering what led up to it, but does Eva really just end with an hour-long rambling angst-fest? I've never prayed so hard for a giant robot battle in all my life. That shyt was ridiculous.  :zzz :zzz For most of the series, it's your basic monster-of-the-week stuff with a healthy dose of teenage angst and only a few brief hints at a larger plot, then in the last few episodes it's like HOLY CRAP LET'S CRAM AS MUCH PLOT IN HERE AS WE CAN PLOT PLOT DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE BUT OH WELL PLOT PLOT OH YES PLOT ALL OVER MY FACE!!!! Then in the last two episodes it's like, oh well sorry we couldn't resolve the plot at all for you like were probably expecting, but here's some shit we wrote while we were totally high last weekend and it seemed pretty profound at the time. Sorry we couldn't be arsed to even animate it, but that's shit costs money.

Does End of Evangelion somehow redeem this whole crazy mess, or should I just abandon all hope? :japancry

Are you just getting into anime?

I watch it off and on. I saw Cowboy Bebop and Trigun several years ago, saw Big O a while back, and then lately I've seen Azumanga Daioh, GITS: SAC, Last Exile, and now NGE. I've seen most of the more well-known movies: Akira, Vampire Hunter D (& Bloodlust), Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Perfect Blue, everything by Miyazaki, and some of the recently released stuff like Appleseed, Paprika, and Tekkonkinkreet.

That's good, because that's the way it's going to go down. They shouldn't give me so many choices; should I watch the Director's Cut of the last few episodes, should I watch Death & Rebirth, should I watch End of Evangelion? And it even if I watch all of it, it still won't make any fucking sense anyway.

Just watch D&R then EoE. The subtleties of the Dir Cut final eps would probably be lost on you if you havent seen it in a while, but these last episodes are really well done. Besides, End of Eva is basically a sort of alternate for the last two episodes of the series. They both cover the same basic themes in their own way.

End of Eva makes a lot more sense than the first cut Eva episodes 25/26. The Dir Cut 25/26 make more sense than the original cuts. The last minute of EoE doesnt make sense but thats ok, that moment is throw-away. EoE is pretty brutal, I think you'll like it.

Watched End of Evangelion yesterday. Seeing made everything better. I wasn't asking for something that made 100% sense and tied up every single loose end. All I wanted was a real ending. Any ending. Episodes 25 & 26 of Eva weren't a proper ending at all. They weren't anything, they were just an hour of rambling. End of Evangelion was a real ending, and now I can put this series to bed and return to some lighter fair.

BTW, Himuro if you're still out there, I started One Piece. I'm about 10 episodes in (they just found out the rich girl is going to be killed by pirates). So far I'm liking it. It's a light, fluffy show with just the right mix of action, comedy, and plot to interested. It's nice to get a break from the crushing pessimism and ineffable plotlines of Eva.

I never watched End of Eva. I was so mad at the original 25 and 26 back in the day that I could never bring myself to watch it.

End of Eva makes up for the crappiness of the last two episodes. It's awesome. I rented it from Netflix, but I went out and bought a copy today because I wanted to watch it again.

BTW, Episode 2 of Tower of Druaga is up on YouTube. I don't know if anyone else watched it besides me and Himuro, but I thought the first episode was pretty good. Plus it's free, and we get it at the same time as the Japanese, can't beat that.

nina goes batshit crazy and builds a nuke threatening to blow shit up :bow
suzaku am pissed and is going completely against his character with his bloodlust for lelouch
c.c. gets called zeros 'ho' lol, obvious at the end she loves him though, green hair omg
guilford fucks up cornelia and then gets pwned like two seconds after realizing what hes done under the geass, so great

stand in room intrigue. sometimes. but it's got some drama too. try searching for the first ep on youtube, it might be there.

Spring season update:

Golgo 13 owns as expected.

The new Golgo 13 does not have the best animation, but I don't think anyone with taste really cares. It is easily one of the better new anime to premiere this season and it's exactly what you should expect: Duke Toge fucking bitches, sniping, and owning everyone.

Direct quote from the first episode:

Duke: I need to be able to hit a target through 3 inches of glass with no change in trajectory. And don't let the increase gunpowder affect its accuracy.

Gun guy: What the hell is your target?

Duke: A meat-filled.....football.

Gun guy: :o

If you've a hankerin' for some manime, you owe it to yourself to watch this.

real drive - production ig anime, looks interesting but I'm not too knowledgable about the premise
chiko - second Bones anime this season next to Soul Eater. This one is a mystery series about a girl who steals art from museums. Sounds ownage and my most anticipated this season...STILL no sub.
library war - second production ig anime. sounds more interesting than real drive tbqh

overall this season seems AAA in terms of quality, comparable to 2003 when Last Exile and a few others were running at the same damn time.

Kemonozume - Cannabalism and hunting demons and awesome.
Gankutsuoh: Count of Monte Cristo - It has mechs, but it's not really about them, and also, they appear in about 1-2 episodes. Better adaptation than the recent movie.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC series - Philosophy, sci-fi, ass kicking, robots. Awesome.

Golgo 13 - Manime

I've seen GITS: SAC and Golgo 13, not my thing. Isn't Kino's Journey old?

My taste in animu is probably a bit gayer than that, I liked Honey & Clover and Haibane Renmei. I have His & Her Circumstances but I've never watched past the first disc. I loved Genshiken & Azumanga too. Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien was great as well, although I watched it not knowing what it was from. Anything like that those I'd probably enjoy

One of the guys I used to work with supplied me with shit like Kanon and Colorful which were fine but I never really got into.

 ???

It was two comments. I wanted to know how many animes in this thread have things like sex and table masturbation.

I was also remarking about the fact that I'm low on hard drive space.

Golgo 13 has sex. Macross Frontier is better than sex. :rock

I haven't watched much anime in years. I started watching Welcome to the NHK but gave. Someone recommend me some very recent stuff that doesn't have mechs or fighting.

Kemonozume - Cannabalism and hunting demons and awesome.
Gankutsuoh: Count of Monte Cristo - It has mechs, but it's not really about them, and also, they appear in about 1-2 episodes. Better adaptation than the recent movie.
Kino's Journey - Introspective and philosophical anime that's very unique and unlike anything else.
Skull Man - Show about a superhero. Extremely well made.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC series - Philosophy, sci-fi, ass kicking, robots. Awesome.
Basilisk - Someone once likened this series as the Berserk of ninja anime and while I disagree, it's still not that far off. It's about blood, kicking ass, and taking names.

Yeah Kino's sorta old but you said you haven't been watching anime for a long time so I dunno how long it's been since you watched it.

Okay... I like a good light hearted anime myself but I haven't seen too much recent anime that does light heartedness WELL. Maybe someone else can enlighten you (beezy?). If you like Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances), Honey and Clover, and KGNE I'd suggest Bokura ga Ita. It's a romance comedy with slice of life. It's pretty decent.

One show people like that fits the bill you're interested in is Haruhi. I'm not the biggest fan but it's interesting.

Some other shows in that crazy and wacky vein:

Genshiken ova's :rock
Genshiken 2 :rock
Sayonara Zetsubuou Sensei
School Rumble series
Futakoi Alternative

Recently? Allison and Lillia. Although it's not balls off the wall wacky, so far it's a fun adventure anime with some comedy thrown in. I'd suggest it anyways.

I would really suggest Gurren Lagann but you said no mechs, so...

I'm not sure if you read manga or not but if you do, I HIGHLY suggest Yotsuba&. It's by the same person who made Azumanga, and chances of an animated version are slim. It's actually better than Azumanga too.

Ugh.

Ugh.

UGH.

DO NOT WATCH ONEGAI TWINS

That show is only good for the unintentional humor, but it was AWFUL and I wasted my time watching it.

"He could be my brother, but maybe not!"

ARGH SHIT
Title: Re: anime you are watching
Post by: Himu on April 16, 2008, 08:11:11 PM
It's about 3 people. They receive a letter or something about being twins so they go this guy's house that is described in the letter. There are two girls and one guy. The guy is most definitely a brother of one of the girls, but they don't know which. A bunch of ridiculous stuff ensues and they fight over him despite the possibility of being his sister :lol

Oh shit. Pilonv, I forgot about Ah! My Goddess TV. Check that out too. And Yakitate!! Japan...a series about BAKING BREAD.

Comedy and slice of life animes? Himuro already mention Honey & Clover, Bokura ga Ita, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Genshiken, School Rumble and Azumanga. The only other two that I can think about right now that I would recommend are Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (it's about a startup band) and Paradise Kiss (about fashion and design students).

I almost forgot about Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). It's one of my favorite comedies. Watch and read everything GTO related if you can (manga, anime, drama, movie). They're all a bit different, but still good.

I haven't been watching these types of animes for very long, so this is about all that I've seen so far.

Fake Edit: Yes Yakitate Japan is fuckin hilarious too. :lol

Beck isn't comedy. It's drama!

I can think of a lot of great comedy anime but he said he hasn't seen it recently so I just listed recent stuff.

But if you wanna go all out, aside from the stuff beezy and I have already listed:

fmp: fumoffu
ping pong club
2x2
Guu trilogy
Cromartie High School
ebichu
golden boy

Blassreiter = Meh/10
Allison & Lillia = This season's Last Exile?/10
Kanokon = WTF, no./10
Kamen no Maid Guy = Not a great show, but I still lol'ed/10
Zettai Karen Children = Japanese Powerpuff Girls/10
Kurenai = Hard to say/10
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki = Main character forcibly married to a catgirl in the first episode/10
Chi's New Home = Kawaii!/10

And finally:

Macross Frontier = Eye Sex/10

No way I'm watching Onegai Twins, I sat through the bullshit Onegai Teacher and that was enough for me.

I'm not sure how old Kanon was but it's probably the same age as the Dreamcast game.

I've seen Beck (good but didn't finish it), AMG TV (same as Beck, actually really liked it but stopped), Yakitake (didn't care for it), School Rumble (watched all 26 episodes), Paradise Kiss (downloaded the first episode and never watched anymore, can't even remember what it was like), GTO (watched some but I have a thing against shows with like 100+ episodes).

Will definitely check out Bokura ga Ita though.

School Rumble has a 2nd season which is another 26 episodes.

GTO is only 43 episodes.

School Rumble was occasionally funny, but it was so generic. The characters were basically interchangeable with characters from any other High School based anime. I can't remember anyone's name on that show, I just remember blond girl, blue haired girl, other blue haired girl, that one guy that likes the blue haired girl, the tough guy, etc.

I guess I'll be watching this.

That was just based on one episode, but it did remind me a lot of Last Exile. It's about this girl and boy and two empires at war, the girl's a biplane pilot, they get swept up in some kind of adventure that could save both empires. I downloaded the second episode, but I haven't watched it yet.

You want the hentai, eh?  Be careful with this stuff, there's some really sick shit out there.  Hentai anime was pretty funny when I was 15, so I guess I can see the appeal.  It's a bunch of crap now though.  Try to find this old anime called "F3 Part 2." (or was it part 3, shit forgot)  The series is about this girl that can't have an orgasm, but who cares.  The LAFFS come from a male ghost haunting her house and possessing this girl, so she now has a penis and talks like a guy.  When her friends and an exorcist try to stop the ghost, he makes the house come alive and the girls are assaulted by DEADLY STUFFED ANIMALS WITH DILDO PENIS HANDS.  This was not intended to be serious like so much other shit, thankfully.

My only problem with the first episode was that I kept thinking "Geez, what is this girl's deal? Why is she such a whiny brat?" then I watched the rest of the episode, and was like "Oh, well that kind of explains it."  :lol It looks like it's going to be a pretty sweet show.

And yeah, the second episode of Macross Frontier was penis hardeningly awesome. It would make a better action movie than Michael Bay's entire filmography.  :gun

Rin Asōgi may look like an ordinary office lady on the outside but she is actually a private investigator taking on any jobs, from finding a stray cat to infiltrating a high-security corporate lab. What's more, she appears literally indestructible, supernaturally healing any injuries and mutilations. Together with her partner Mimi, Rin delves into the darkest secrets of the society but the ones she hides herself are by far more sinister...

Alternating between Blood+, Mnemosyne, and I've had GTO and Berserk on the backburner forever.  I'm also considering watching Serial Experiments Lain again...as insane as it is.

I'm not a consistent anime fan, but when I get the itch for it, I go all out. :)

I've already seen the first season of Geass, but I DVR'd the English dubbed episode last night just for fun. It wasn't bad, but it would've been cool to have a bunch of British voice actors/accents for the members of Brittanian Empire.

I really hope Bandai releases Geass (and Gundam 00) on Blu-ray in North America, like they are in Japan.

forgot how "avant garde" Lain is.  pretty interesting show.  fun fact: it was also the first complete anime series I watched.

also watched the opposite of Lain-- Hellsing OVA ep.1.   Fucking awesome so far.  I'm really happy they decided to do the manga justice.  The series was just blech, though I don't remember why any more (been a couple years since I watched it.)  In any case,  hand-spearing vampires then giving a quick smirk and self-affirming grunt ftw

I'm on like episode 16.  I still don't know what to make of it.  I like the vash but the other characters I dislike.  The dialog is horrid; even low for anime standards.  The story is really cool.  At times i like the art style and animation and other times it feels cheep.

I thought those three things are the norm in anime.  :lol

If normal means no superpowers, no supernatural elements, no over-sexualized women (and girls), no insane fight scenes that last forever, no constant emphasis of style over substance, no futuristic elements, no mechs, mutants, goddesses, or otherwise unrealistic characters, no non-sense plots, or other things that you typically find in anime,  then the most normal anime I've seen is Monster.  and it's fucking awesome, though it's not 100% free of usual anime bs. There's some unrealistic psychological things going on, but for the most part, it's a straight up mystery/crime/suspense drama.

whoops-- I guess there's the whole slice of life genre too.  but that stuff tends to be for teen girls...

What's "dmz?" Do you mean DBZ?

I have zero interest in shonen fighting shows (Naruto, DBZ, Saint Seya, etc.), hentai does nothing for me, and I find loli/moe really disturbing.

I like giant robots (Gundam, Votoms, Macross, Dragonar), Ghibli, Satoshi Kon, Leiji Matsumoto (Captain Harlock, Yamato, etc.) and fantasy/scifi stuff like Last Exile, Twelve Kingdoms, Escaflowne, etc.

sure there is.  It's very possible to be into anime, gaming, japanese culture in general and not have interest in the typical mouth-breathing otaku pedo fanboy crap. (Okay, I'll admit I watched Azumanga Daioh...but that's it.)  it's just difficult to find people who are very into that stuff but aren't fucking insane about it.

Here's the awesome anime, with a few titles on there only because of toonami and nostalgia:

Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA + TV
Last Exile
Paranoia Agent
Lodoss War
El Hazard Magnificent World OVA
Neon Genesis Evangelion TV + Movies
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop + Movie
Eureka Seven
Gankutsuou
Excel Saga
Azumanga Daioh
FLCL
IRIA
The Galaxy Railways
Dragon Ball + Movies (No Z here thanks)
Nadesico
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team
Scrapped Princess
Scryed
Tenchi Universe + 1st Movie (Blame Toonami for this one)
Read or Die OVA (Tv series sucked)
Hale Nochi Guu TV and OVA
Giant Robo
Tsukikage Ran OVA
Castle in the Sky (Movie)
Perfect Blue (Movie)
Millenium Actress (Movie)
Tokyo Godfathers (Movie)
Paprika (Movie)
Tekkon Kinkreet (Movie)
Metropolis (Movie)
Howl's Moving Castle (Movie)
Slayers (Original/Next/Try + OVAs + 5 Movies)
Lost Universe
Nadia
Gundam Seed
Big O
Lupin the III (Only have the 10 movies)

I havent included the ones I havent got to yet but bought on recommendation:

Now and Then Here and There
Planetes
Twelve Kingdoms
Z Gundam
SteamBoy
Aquarion

See now what I dont get is people come on the forum going oh what anime should I watch and instead of offering the WEALTH of older good anime out there that has been re-released even just recently, they offer up distinguished mentally-challenged fanservice butt wagging loli hentai bullshit that requires a download from a torrent site. GODDAMN.

got up to ep IV of the OVA-- what a fucking cliffhanger!!!  I think that's exactly where I got up to in the manga--book 6 or 7.  It's going to take them all frikkin' year to release ep V.

I can safely say that the animation, art, and action in the OVA is some of the best I've ever seen in a show.  I need to buy the DVDs so I can support these guys and see these episodes at their best.

I watched mnemosyne ep 4, recently subbed by doremi, and no one else yet.

It takes place in 2025 unlike the first few taking place in the earlier 1990s.

humanity has evolved its internet into a VR like system, thus a large population of people are addicted and become jobless bums spending all their free time in their internet lives

Its a pretty good depiction of what I believe will happen to our society eventually, assuming such insane speed wireless internet becomes popular and there are VR headsets of some sort. Its not happening by 2025 for us of course

anyway everyone's favorite lesbian immortals are still doing there investigative thing, same office, same familiar "vodka means water in Russian" joke at the beginning of the episode.

this episode involves maenos now grown up son who is an internet addict in denial.. wont spoil anymore, watch it

:japancry

The wife and I watched the whole TV series, and were really enjoying it, right up until those two final episodes. The fountain of hatred that sprang forth over those two episodes was remarkable and justified. The movies were basically an answer to fan demand that it be finished properly, provide some good answers.

I sometimes wonder if there will ever be a day where a game would have a chance to make a massive sequel just based on fans being dissatisfied with the original's ending.

Did anyone watch the "Fansub Documentary" on Youtube?  It's pretty good...the guy basically picks apart all the fansub groups and shows what's wrong with them.  Good for a laugh.

Some of the early Slayers dub stuff is funny. They even poke fun at it on the interview extras. Next and Try were much more even

I just googled this, and it's probably the worst "documentary" ever.

a) he's a professional (or so he says) and they are not

b) he gets paid, and thus has to be professional, and they do not

c) he's british

d) why the fuck does he care, he can read the moonspeak anyway

I dont even watch this shit and I think he's a big fucking pussy. He is probably a GAFfot. Or Himuro.

First half of the first Full Metal Panic series is fun, then it devolves into generic mecha anime that isnt that interesting

Ah, the poor man's Cowboy Bebop. It's still good in its own right, though.

Actually, it began airing several months prior to Cowboy Bebop and is based on manga from 1997 which is itself a spinoff of a much older manga.

what's it a spin off of? It never even reminded me of Cowboy Bebop. I thought Trigun was the poor man's Cowboy Bebop.

Outlaw Star is decent. Nothing memorable though.

Future-Retro Hero Story. It doesn't have an English release though.

Both shows are about intergalactic bounty hunters and feature space battles. They aren't really all that similar, your post just reminded me about an argument I had one time.
