I'm in this religion class and one of the projects is to go to a mass/worship service of some faith other than your own. I don't practice, but I was raised Catholic, so I can't use that. We also need to compare our experience with what we learned in class. I have the most notes on Judaism so I thought I'd use that.
I can't bring myself to go a synagogue alone; I'd be afraid of doing something wrong and sticking out and offending someone. My sheltered self has mostly Catholic friends, so I can't even go to a friend's church. :(
Can anyone give me a detailed rundown of what happens at your services? I'll love you forever!
ETA: If you'd rather not discuss your religious affiliation on this board, you can PM me or IM me. xnikki118x on AIM. And I won't post your info on here or anything.

I might be jewish. My dad had a form of sickle cell anemia that is rarely found outside of jewish people. And he's from poland.
-
You should go to a scientology class for the class.
-
I think this is why you're lepered.
And here I thought someone had posted something useful. Bah.

But Jews are smart.
And isn't sickle cell anemia mostly found among people from Africa? Maybe you're black.

If you're serious, can you post a rundown of a regular service? Either here or PM me or something? If you have time. I'd really appreciate it. :D

Why not save yourself the grief by just visiting a black evangelical church
-
I don't even know if there are any of those around here, to be honest. I'm in a very very white area. Plus I missed some classes so I want to do it on Judaism, since I have the most notes on that.

I was just kidding. Why don't you just look up some jews in your city and take a visit.

I practice Norse mythology.

No mosques in town either? Last time I went to a mosque there was a greeter who told me all the stuff I had to do. I'd imagine synagogues have greeters as well. And if they don't, maybe show up on a day they aren't having full service and ask some questions, then show up on their day of worship
-
if you can't find anyone to go with, you could always call the rabbi at your local synagogue and ask to talk to him personally. just tell him you're doing a school project on his faith and you're interested in attending a service. be honest and say you don't know much about judaism, and ask him if there's anything special you need to do or know to prepare before you go.
people are always really happy to teach others about their faith, and it's his job, so he'll be glad to talk to you and answer any questions you might have.
also i'm pretty sure willco is half-jewish, so he could probably help you out.

Nikki, you're oblivious :hehe.
You're not in a very white area! You're one of the only two white families on your street! Granted, everyone else is Mexican Catholic, so that wouldn't help, but still.
There's a Mosque only a few miles from both of us, right between us, in fact.
And there's always lots of those militant black muslims in the downtown area, but I don't really recommend going to their place of worship.
I think there's mormons around too, because I'm always seeing those weirdos riding on their bikes in their black suits on the weekends.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 43,123 people, 17,961 households, and 9,878 families residing in the city. The population density was 6,296.3 people per square mile (2,430.6/kmē). There were 20,294 housing units at an average density of 2,963.1/sq mi (1,143.9/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 92.30% White, 5.09% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.58% of the population.
That's pretty white, lol. There are a few Mexican families at the bottom of the street, but up here it's mostly white older people.
I don't really have time to do the running around, unfortunately. I totally forgot about this until today and it's due Tuesday. :( I'm just looking for a rundown of a service so that I can be like "well I went to so-and-so synagogue and this happened and this happened and I thought this was going to happen but it didn't".
Even if I could get a rundown of, say, whatever a Mormon worship service is, I can't use it because I wasn't there when we talked about Mormonism and what their services are like. My only really extensive notes are on Jews.
This sux.

Isn't Jewish sabbath on saturday anywar? You'd be fucked either way.

Which is another reason why I don't want to go and instead just get a rundown of a mass from someone.

Yes, high holy holidays aside, services are held on friday nights and saturday mornings. It's been some years since I went to services, but you just go to services and listen to the Rabbi and Cantor read a portion of the Torah. You follow along in a prayer book typically in both English and Hebrew, also with English pronunciation of the Hebrew as well. The Rabbi will also give a sermon on saturday mornings. Many Saturdays are also spent with kids having their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs. During this part of the service, a 13 year-old boy or girl will read a portion of Torah.
But it also depends on the type of Synagogue...there's reformed, conservative, and orthodox Jews. And going past orthodox to the "extreme" are Hassidic Jews.
-
Just go to a reformed snyagogue. They'll be ecstatic you show any interest in the religion, will share a ton of information, field questions that most religious groups won't (you can be critical with a reformed rabbi) and are pretty open to all individuals.
There's no Hell too. Judaism +1

No hell? Awesome!
The thing is I need the paper by Tuesday, and I forgot about it until it was too late to actually go to a synagogue.

This is exactly what I mean! :hyper
We learned about the different types. Very interesting!
So I'm going to say I went to a reformed Jewish Synagogue, and there were no Bar or Bat Mitzvahs. (Or is that very unlikely? Are there Bar and Bat Mitzvahs like every Saturday?) The Rabbi read from the Torah, I'll say Leviticus, and I followed along in English because I don't speak/read Hebrew.
What happens after he reads from the Torah?

[bump, in case anyone has anything constructive to add]

Let them know that after circumcision, any practicing Jew gets a media discount card that entitles them to free movie tickets, cheaper cable prices, etc. Also, once a month, we get a check for running all journalism sources.

Willco, you forgot to mention the gold!

Himuro should become Jewish instead, then he'd actually be on the winning side.

Willco, you forgot to mention the gold!
Ah yes, nikki, they hide their gold in their noses. That's why they are all misshapen.
