What makes you say that? They still sell and GT has a huge fanbase. Burnout is also another successful, albeit not my favorite, racing franchise.

Totally agree with you on this, except I didn't care much for Sega Rally and liked Mario Kart DS well enough. I can't stand sim racers though... too slow-paced, too high learning curve, and I hate excessive realism in my games.
