Title: It's been almost a month since I have done any actual work.
Post by: bork on April 09, 2008, 04:19:44 AM
This is amazing.  Four weeks ago, the kids were finishing up and I had nothing to do.  Then there was graduation and two weeks off.  This week I come back and find new staff and STILL nothing to do-- for the entire week.  My days have been spent endlessly on the internet doing whatever.  It amazes me how much useless nonsense the schools here do at the end and the beginning of the school year.  Oh well, two more work days left this week.  Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Well, I definitely realize the pointlessness of the end of the school year, even as s student.  We all can tell that when there's a bunch of bullshit projects with only like a week left of school, they're getting desperate for time well spent and more grades that are even needed.

What do you teach, lyte edge?

What do you teach, lyte edge?

I'm an assistant language teacherguy that sits around on the internet and occassionally goes and helps teach English to junior high school kids in Japan.  The school year here ends in late March and begins again in April...those poor kids (and poor teachers!) don't get much of a break.  Even weirder, they still have summer vacation, for around six weeks, so basically the school year starts and then four months later they're off again.

Teachers don't get this time off, so you just come into work, baking in the hot non air conditioned school and be bored, bored, bored.  ALTs in my area at least get "cultural furlough," which basically means you get five days off during vacation periods as long as you do something culturally relevant (I.E. don't leave the country), on top of the 20 days of paid leave you get every school year.

My time here ends at the the end of July and I am looking quite forward to getting the hell out of here now.  I've certainly enjoyed the majority of my time on the JET Program, but it has largely been unchallenging and rather unfulfilling work.  I really don't think the teaching thing is for me.

At least you get paid for doing nothing.

Well, before I'd go to class and stand around and stuff too.  Maybe say something in English now and then.
