The engineers at Sony can't be too thrilled with fighting the constant battle against PSP hackers, issuing firmware updates that "strengthen security" in a futile attempt to curb piracy and homebrew applications. Going by a recent survey commissioned by Sony Computer Entertainment, passed on to us by a reader who was asked to take part, the company seems to be looking into the reasons why PSP owners are opening up their portables.

Sony reps call the survey a part of "ongoing PSP consumer research", attempting to learn more about the size of the PSP hacking population and the mentality behind the behavior. Questions like "Do you know of anyone who has "hacked," or modified, transferred and customized their PSP firmware and software?" were included elsewhere in the poll.

We're following up with Sony to learn more about its research.

"Hacking my PSP is my way of compensating for the tiny size of 'my other handheld'.  1)  Do not agree at all... 5)  Agree completely

I love how they go out of their way not to acknowledge that modified PSPs allow to play retail games for free

They did.  It's in the 3rd option.

I'm impressed at how many times they manage to hint that hacking your PSP is actually illegal.  There's not a legal precedent for that AFAIK(nothing has gone far enough to get a judgement/opinion written on it).  I wonder if they are also angling the 'survey' to scare people away from hacking their PSPs.

Even if there was, there's no way that they are going to try and get people in trouble over this.  It would be a huge PR nightmare.  Hopefully most companies have learned from the RIAA's and MPAA's mistakes.

if people confirm the rebel theory, will they try to fight piracy through reverse psychology?  they could run commercials and ads exhorting people never to pay for games.
