She looks totally out of place.  Kinda like Gon in Tekken 3 for PSone.

Is that supposed to be somebody, or did they just decide to add some animu-looking character?

The latter, apparently. They got the guy from Sgt. Frog to contribute, but forgot to tell him to make the character not look out of place...  :-X

This character is still better than Darth Vader or Yoda.   :-\

The character is designed by Mine Yoshizaki, who is most famous for Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog).  This is "Angol Fear," I guess related to the younger character from Keroro somehow.  I like the guy's art, but the model doesn't fit the game at all.  I wish Namco would leave the "guest character" shit to just being outfit designs like in Tekken 5.  This is has gone beyond Necrid and Spawn the shitty Todd McFarlene poop in SC2.

But hey, the game's gonna have online play and not be all fucked up like SC3 was.  I'm there.  Might get it on PS3 since Vader is still less homo than Yoda.

I don't get the hate for Yoda.  He was pretty badass in his fight scenes, even more so than Vader.

He's a muppet.

Wait, I take it back.  He IS cooler than the entire Star Wars cast.

But let's get back to hating on SC4.  Stay on-topic!

I really have the urge to play it now. Since SC4 is a fucking abortion. And to think SC1 was probably my most played game of last generation. What the fuck.

And you know this how...?  Just don't use the guest characters if you don't like them.  I don't know if I could go back to SC1 with all the changes and new stuff the characters got...SC2 is where it's at, not the original.  Think I might play that when I get home...ON XBOX 360.   :P

Anyway, Samurai Spirits Sen is like Soul Calibur and has no dumb guest characters.  It's supposed to be out in arcades today...hope someplace here gets it.

I didn't like SC2 as much as the original. Probably because of the dumb mascot shit (or because I had grown so accustomed to the original). SC3 I never got into because I didn't have people to play with. I don't even know why I bothered to buy it.

It's because SC1 wowed everyone with it's better-than-the-arcade graphics.  That's what sucked everyone into the game more than even the game play did.  By the time SC2 came out it seemed like old hat, but man is SC2 a much better game.  I didn't mind Link in the GC version but YUCK YUCK to Spawn and even Heihachi.  SC2 is also forever tainted by Necrid.  SC3 is just fucked up.  They fixed some issues with the arcade version, but that never got a home release.  My favorite thing to do is play versus matches with randomly-generated create-a-characters.

Yes, Necrid was worse than all the console-exculsive mascots combined. Jesus.

And I'll admit the graphics point lyte edge. SC blew my 13-year-old mind, and I played it to fucking death. :P

Saw this first-hand at the game shop I was working at.  We imported the Japanese version in summer 1999 and people were pissing themselves when they saw the game running.  It was an easy system-seller.  I think maybe last year on GAF the game came up and I was questioning why people were calling it "revolutionary," because the only thing about the game that really made it stood out was its visuals.  People today still herald the game as something ground-breaking, but that's bullshit.

Jesus fucking christ SO MUCH HOMO never fit better.   Get your Todd McFarlene loving ass out of here.   :maf

I think it's safe to say Samurai isn't going to do that.   :)  I'm more excited about this game than SC4.  It's a Type X-2 game and the graphics look like something beyond what the PS2 does, so I think it's safe to say this will get a next-gen port.

Yea, I'm pretty sure I've never described it as "revolutionary." It just completely shit on every console game I had ever seen before it graphically. Also, I had never played a fighter with weapons...outside of Ergeiz (however the fuck you spell it). Was it the first successful weapon-based console fighter?

i still think it's the best-looking fighter of last generation by far

I think you could say it (starting with Soul Edge)  was the first successful weapons-based 3D fighter, but Toshinden did come out first, and the original sold decently enough at the time if I remember right.  There was also Capcom's Star Gladiator (The original playing very similar to Soul Edge, but I think Soul Edge hit arcades first) and later on Sega's Last Bronx.  The latter I'd love to see an updated version of, since there are no real modern weapon-based fighters out there.

Are any of the PS2 SC games widescreen?

I want to say SC2 is also 480p and has widescreen just like SC3.  Been a while though.  I was thinking of picking up a Japanese SC2 PS2 copy up so I can try it upscaled to 1080i or 1080p...the Xbox version offers 720p but forces a 4:3 aspect ratio on the game when you do this.  But the J-SC2s are a little inferior to the U.S. versions...they changed some of the music and also added the bonus vs. characters into the U.S. versions.

sc3 is, and supports 480p

Some of SC3's backgrounds are just  :o.  But is it better-looking than Tekken 5/DR?  Hmm...definitely shits all over Tekken's animation, but that's no real surprise.

SC2 looks better in 720P althought it's limited to 4x3 in 720p mode.

Smooth, have you ever tried SC2 or SC3 upscaled on a PS3 before?  Come to think of it, I don't think I ever tried SC3 in 1080p.
Title: Re: Soul Calibur 4 SMH
Post by: Smooth Groove on April 18, 2008, 01:42:19 AM
No, I rarely play last-gen games any more, unless you count the WII as last gen.  The PS3's upscaling does wonders for DVD but seems to do little for PS2 games.

PS2 games' native 480P rendering (in games that support it) looked better than upscaled 1080P.

I bought all 3 versions of SC2.  The Xbox version looked the best because it could run in 720p.

I bought all three versions too.  Multiple times counting the Japanese and American releases.   :lol  But I didn't have a TV capable of outputting 720p at the time.
