It's pretty decent, especially as far as 16-bit SRPGs go... insane levels of customization options, but the difficulty even at this stage of the game (the 7th or 8th skirmish or so) is steep, especially since you don't seem to get enough money to upgrade your wanzers to their fullest. I like the music though and will be playing more. What is the EB consensus on this game?

It great, it gets soul crushingly hard after a few missions tho.
Maybe I'm too weak when it comes to strategy, but its truly relentless.

I got about as far as you are. My main worry is it'll get monotonous before long. Games like FFT have a million shiny toys (jobs, abilities, gimmicks) to distract me and that seems to be missing here, but the strategy doesn't seem super-substantial either. Customization is cool but the end result is a handful of numbers

It is mecha boring
ha ha ha ha

fantastic game with an amazing soundtrack and a refreshing semi-realistic setting, but on both scenarios it gets laughably easy as soon as everyone in your team gains the ability to target specific wanzer parts (you'll always target the body), along with powerful missiles and mid-range guns
the second scenario starts off with some really hard missions, and some good set pieces, but after that it keeps getting easier and easier, every mission consists of "destroy all the wanzers on screen!" instead of the tense set pieces of the first scenario and of the early second scenario... the last few missions for both scenarios basically cannot be failed with all the upgrades you've accumulated at this point, with the last boss fights being some of the easiest in the history of gaming
I completed both
the story in the second part is also good, but it's noticeably shorter and some secondary characters are lacking in development... but it's funny to see how Royd, his band and the O.C.U are the bad guys, and the Hell's Wall crew the good guys in the second scenario

I got it on sale for $20 last year and still haven't played it.

Any tips for raising money in the beginning of the game? Grinding in the arena seems like quite the chore... I'm up to the mission where you have to destroy the 3 SAMs and there are a shit ton of powerful enemy wanzers around.

take your character from the lowest level for the arena fights, and then find an opponent that offers about 2x the wager's money if you win or more, and then repeat as much as possible
