'Cause I'm fucking lazy and don't feel like looking through 40+ pages fanboy forum threads, which version is supposed to be the best? I know the game is getting exclusive DLC on 360 but I doubt I'll care about the game at that point.
-
the game isn't out lyte.
-
PS3 has a 5 min install. Both systems have minute colour differences related to their display output.
I think that's it.
-
PC?
Except for GTA3, which I got for the PS2 in the 1st month of its release, I've always waited for the PC versions. The better framerate, higher resolution and faster loading times are well worth the wait.

Why do you think we charge you $50 for a flu visit even when all we do is tell you to get some sleep and water?
It's to buy expensive upgrades for our gaming PCs.
-
360 for the exclusive DLC and the online community. If you don't really care about either, then it's a coin toss.
-
360 cause im too busy watching blurays and playing MLB The Show 08 to bother getting GTA4 PS3
-
I've never had much of an interest in the GTA games, but I have to say what I've read about the MP sounds really, really inventive.
-
ps3 because

Eh, I'll try it, but I get the feeling it will be back to the FPS games soon enough. I'm leaning towards the PS3 version since it would give the console some USE. Plus I have all that HD space available.

ps3 version is the official choice of sam houser and various unnamed rockstar employees who spoke to andrew pfister -- those are some PRETTY COMPELLING ENDORSEMENTS
$50 mil doesn't go as far as it used to :usacry

Well, you sold me.

doesnt matter, its a rental either way

I'll go with whatever version Deadmeat chooses. He seems to be the expert on such matters.

Buy both!

PS3, superior version (confirmed by rockstar, skip and sam houser himself)
no dre or rrod
no xfags online
free online
superior something something
15 million people bought GTA3-SA
~1 million bought LC and VC stories so even less will care about the DLC
-
360 version. I'm gonna roll the dice everytime I boot and enjoy my achievements and multiplayer with actual friends.
IM SURE THE FACT THAT YOU'RE A SONY HATING taco GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH IT HMMMMMMM
-
but they'll buy GTA in their droves on PS3?
yes
3 to 1 in favor of ps3 version in the uk
-
it doesn't really matter but i think the ps3 version would be better because:
-the system won't crash in 2 - 3 years which means you'll be able to play the game without buying a new system
-when the ps4 comes out you'll probably be able to play ps3 games
-(to lyte) you barely have any ps3 games anyway and the collection needs a little help and expansion
-
360, mostly for the DLC and people that I play online with are getting that version.
-
360 version for me. I still am the only one of my friends with a PS3BLURAYmovie player so definitely have to have the 360 for multiplayer.
-
360 version. It will be COD all over again where ill play online more than the single player anyways. And XBL is where its at.
-
360, i'm not dumb
-
Dont tell Wollan that Kev youl break his heart.

these "compelling endorsements" boil down to "the color looks better" and "man, i wish ms woulda made the hd standard across skus"
if you can't muster a better endorsement -- even a "i like the temporal aa better than actual 2x aa" or a "it has 60 fps cutscenes" type of low-wattage preference -- i suspect shenanigans
shenanigans of the sort that suggest rockstar doesn't wanna cripple sales among internet sony fans by talking about the real state of the ps3 port
but what do i know, i am totally xtarded

tbh i'll be surprised if the ps3 version isn't a bit worse, 360 being 'lead platform' and all. but it's pretty fucking funny that microsoft's big payout didn't buy positive mentions from rockstar staff, prominent logo placements in the ads, the sort of platform focus that some devs give microsoft FOR FREE, or any immediate content difference -- 'you can buy some sort of expansion in the fall' is a pretty cold fish. that sort of money used to buy exclusivity.
-
Didn't Square and Konami supposedly offer ports of FF and MGS to MS for big sums of money? If those reports were true, it's no wonder that MS considered Rockstar's $50 mill fee to be a bargain.
-

why would rockstar bother? they could maximize sales on both platforms (xfans are going to obviously disregard whatever anyone says about ps3 anyway, lol) and let MS and Sony pay for their advertising campaigns.
companies like namco and ubisoft that do the moneyhat thing and then are awkward and cagey when asked about other platforms end up with ports like Splinter Cell Double Agent and Ace Combat bombas. the moneyhat for ac6 must have been purdy nice. game sold like 80k at launch and then dropped.
-
Sounds like the PS3 version is the way to go due to better load times and on-screen graphics due to the install.
Unless you want the DLC.
-
i think the 360 has the optional install
-
I'll get it on 360 for the DLC, but I can't answer the actual questions in the OP about which one technically runs better.
-
X360 version cannot have jaggies.
If there are jaggies, then it's the PSX3 version.

Exclusive review from OA Mina:
Long story short.
GTAIV has the COD4 effect. Looks the same on both consoles until you start looking for nit-picky things.
Firstly the game looks pretty ace for a GTA game, but it's not the best looking game on either console. I can prolly name many games that *look* as good or better, but that doesn't mean this game looks bad in any way. It would help you if you judge this game from previous GTA games in terms of visuals, because the effect is much better that away instead of comparing it to say, Gears or Drake. At times GTA4 looks stunning, and at times it looks a bit average. It really depends on the condition of where you're at and the lighting/texturing of the scene you're in.
But to make up for some of the graphics, the sense of scale is very nice and invites you to dick around in the large open playground they set for you. One of the things you notice is how populated the world is, with lots of movement and *life* to it. Definitely much better than previous GTA's as well as previous GTA clones. Traffic looks, feels and reacts like traffic should. This A.I. traffic looks like it they're actually driving for a reason and not just cruising in and out of the scene just because -- so yes, it's quite convincing. Driving around in a vehicle is much like previous GTA, and perhaps it's just been awhile since I played a GTA, but I thought the controls were more responsive this time around (also coulda been the vehicles I driven around). In a way, it reminded me a lot of Crazy Taxi 1, just with actual damage. Driving around causing trouble has always been the best of GTA for me and this does things MUCH better. Plus it seems you get into a lot of trouble much faster than before. =)
What really sets the game are the animations and physics. There are moments of stiffness and poorly blended animations here and there, but for the most part everyone and everything moves fluidly. Things tend to react how they should, some things don't. It *appears* you can crash into almost any object and it will cause a reaction, and sometimes you can smash into something at Warp 5 and nothing happens 'cept your car gets totaled. I guess fully destructible environments ain't happening this time huh? That's ok, it's not a big deal and you'll get over it.
The controls are subjective on this one. Both console controls seem to be pretty tight and responsive. It's all gonna depend on how you like your analogs spaced and if you want rumble outta the box.
I couldn't tell you which version loaded faster or not as the game was already being played when I showed up for the lunch party. smile.gif I also didn't ask if there was any mandatory installs or if the PS3 version was running of the HDD. Sorry.
So which version is *superior*?
Well as I said before, it's the COD4 effect. At first glance they look the same with their small differences. 360 looks sharper, higher-res in some areas. Coming up to some objects will reveal that, also things at a distance look a bit more defined too. They both suffer from framerate issues, tho it looks like the 360 is handling it better when it comes to more populated areas (people, traffic, etc). The pop-up/fade in isn't too distracting, I do admit that is DOES show in both versions, but it doesn't look to be more or less on either console.
Lighting seems about the same, honestly I was looking at texturing more than lighting to notice it too much. =p But there were some parts on the PS3 version where things look like it was pre-baked with lights/shadows... it had that faked Heavenly Sword look to it where you know they did some *tricks* to make something appear at least statically, because they couldn't get it dynamically and it loses it's richness. As for the "softness" and "warmth" of the PS3 rendering that was talked about earlier, it makes things appear smooth but it's like putting turtle wax on a low res texture. It has that soft upscaled look to it that most of you console-ers should be used to by now, and looks like some filtering was used to clean it up a bit, if not *hide* it. I don't know if it's being upscaled, but it just has that look to it.
So unless you're as nitpicky as I am and don't care about the differences, each version is good to good depending on your choice of control pads and whether or not you want the extra DLC on the 360.
-
I don't know if it's being upscaled, but it just has that look to it.

The best part would be if the game ends up selling less than it did last gen, which would be reasonable considering the lower userbases and the decline in popularity that's expected going from one generation to the next. Course, then again, Halo 3 and CoD4...

leopold or harold?
in any case heavenly sword was supposed to have an effect where the time of day changed as you did super moves, but this turned out to be confusing, and it was a PITA for the artists, so they axed it. but they kept the fully dynamic lighting engine -- that's why the shadows are so low-res.
all of mina's 'technical' claims sound like the kind of reverse reasoning that goes on here -- 'deadmeat sez rsx budget gpu, so there must be something technically wrong with all ps3 games, even when they obviously kill the ugly 360 games i apologize for.' again, i'll be surprised if the ps3 version comes out ahead, but i'm waiting for comparisons from eurogamer/b3d/the few gafers who know their shit

A great sacrifice was made to get GTA4 running on PSX3, Rockstar basically turned off shader and switched to 16 bit rendering. :-X

Very unprofessional, imo.

never said that about hs, which has some nice dynamic effects (@ 15 fps, budget gpu powar). i said uncharted has some seriously baked (multi-texture) lighting in its underground areas, and i was right
:bow me :bow2
:-X rsx lo-fi shadows and 2003's stencil effects :-X
if ps3 deserves any credit, it's that it has more ambitious devs who cut their teeth on the ps2, instead of letting directx feature pipelines do all the heavy lifting for them.
-
Drinky, 15 fps was HS's max framerate. The average framerate was around 6-10 fps.
-
deadmeat's rarely right, but his observation that the rsx is essentially the 7600gt is spot-on. admittedly, there's an extra-fat bus mainlined straight into 256 mb xdr (not gddr3 or worse, as on the average budget card), but the number of pipelines seems to mysteriously double whenever a jargon-happy albeit math-clueless sony fanboy decides to pull up a pedestal at beyond3d
rsx *is* a budget gpu. xenos is a significant improvement in a lot of ways, but it's shackled to ex-pc dev directx-style thinking and will never really be exploited save by folks like rare, who unfortunately also make rare games
-
You're probably right about the lazy devs working on the 360. I remember all that talk about how Xenos is capable of more polys/s than RSX but the 360 has yet to show much advantage in that area.
At least, Xenos' scaling abilities have been put to good use. The 360's scaling ability is a severely underrated feature. On my 1080P TV, the 360's picture looks noticeably crisper when I set it to 1080P.
I suspect that the PS3 looks a bit blurrier because it can't scale most games to 1080P and even when it does, it's doing some weird method that isn't exactly 1920x1080.
-
Has this confirmed to be real? If so, that's pretty weird that Rockstar would be complaining about disc space when GTA4 is only 6.3 gbs.
http://kotaku.com/383017/pirated-gta-iv-leaked-early-online
-
maybe they cut out something?
-
The 360 disk only holds 7 GB. If the ISO is compressed, I imagine they'd be pretty close to the limit.
-
The interview with Sam is basically "I don't know anything about the technical side of things i leave that to other people , but the DVD is simply too small!"
err...
be prepared to walk all the way to your 360 to put in the second disc once you enter city #2 in gtav

xbots: multiple discs are awesome! i can play disc 2 and share disc 1 with my mate!
-
SO EXCITED> SO SO EXCITED.
-
It's so exciting to be in New York and then play the game. My city! Oh.
-
with my 360 version I found that the game looks like ASS, prepare to be severely disappointed when you get it
annoying shimmering all over the place when outside that distracts you when you try to view things away in the distance (there's a bridge and it's so rough around the edges I can't believe it), unimpressive character models, environments and objects, some really, REALLY bad looking set pieces... only the facial animation in cutscenes and the lighting looks good at times, for the rest it's an Xbox game in HD
apart from that it's the same kind of game as GTA III, only with more emphasis on developed film-like cutscenes... this aspect is really good, I love what Rockstar is doing and they're once more at the top of their game
and one character calls another a cigarillo! take that GAF queers, muhahahahahahaha
-
Multiple disks. Somebody has been going to the Wollan school of Xbox FUD
mentioned it to him, says that he only did it 3 times so it's somehow not fud.
Meh i got banned for calling him out on that blatant fud last year.
-
Gaming real talk: I honestly don't expect GTAIV to be that much better than the last generation of games were, nor do I expect it to top Crackdown, which kicks the collective asses of all the GTA games all over the place. But I finished Crackdown quickly after its release and am looking for something new to play. Saint's Row just didn't cut it for me (but I will be checking out the sequel), so hopefully this game will. I still don't expect the multiplayer to be anything special or long-lasting. Really if GTA wasn't being released now, with so little else coming out, I don't know if I'd really care about it at all.
So if the game turns out to be much better than expected, great! But if not, I'm not going to be let down as I'm already going in with average expectations.
-
Im more interested in the multiplayer. But i guess im in the minority
-

Hey, if it's good, I'm in.

But the game is not on multiple discs, right...?
-

I'm way interested in that, dunno about 'more'

Dcharlie, did you read that GAF article on 1up? It was pretty hilarious the way they tried to portray MS as the bad guy on GAF. First, they mentioned Jeff Bell and then Sp0rks mentioned that GAF is teh suck at detecting virals because everyone missed the fact that Ghaleon is the biggest viral.
-
Meh i got banned for calling him out on that blatant fud last year.
i'm wondering how long my free pass on calling out people 'who will never be banned' will last ? lol.
I'm being fair, i'm not saying anything false, just holding up a mirror. If they don't like what they see, hopefully the bullsheeet will stop.
P.S. Xfag Emperor is allowed to be a hypocrit, it's in my contract. ;)
Meh i got banned for calling him out on that blatant fud last year.
whut whut? what was the reason in the mail?
I mean - at that point, it was basically "i think" vs "i think" (except if you knew -anyone- at R*N who were saying "it's on one disk" for AGES), so people arguing were just exchanging FUD/FUD-Flare+chaff. To be banned for not agreeing it's on multiple disks.... jeesssh. Unless of course you called him a donkey's cock dribble or something like that, i don't get it :(
That was last year, he was spewing out his toll booth pics and people were worried about multiple disks in X360 GTA4. I basically said that the Multiple Disks thing is Sbot FUD and bam got banned Missed E3 last year.

Can you do splitscreen online?
-
Can you do splitscreen online?
only with the power of xenos.
-
Splitscreen is not possible on the PS3 because its firmware takes up too much memory. Only with the unique memory architecture of the Xbox 360 is splitscreen play possible.
-
What is the real answer lol

It's real if you believe it. Haven't you learned at least that much from your time at GAF?

there's no split-screen whatsoever in either version, v
