Title: why do people talk in ellipses?
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on April 23, 2008, 07:19:37 AM
I don't really get it... because it's not actually any easier to type than using proper punctuation... and it looks distinguished mentally-challenged... and I don't see what's so hard to learn or understand about punctuation rules... is it a style thing... where did it originate... what message is it trying to send... help me...

I use it as a substitution for train of thought type posting.  Sometimes I post like that, other times I form complete ideas before I post.  Still other times, I form complete ideas about midgets unrelated to the subject.  It all depends, either way I find ellipses a good tool for informal posting and emailing.

As far as my use of it goes, when I am online, I generally type as I would speak, and I use the ellipsis to mark a pause.

yeah, like groo I do it where I would pause, hesitate or change direction midway through a word/sentence.

But . . . that's what commas . . . dashes . . . semicolons . . . and colons are for. . . .

yeah I just use normal punctuation

I used to be alot more anal about typing, using capitalization, all that jazz, but then I realized it was stupid, so I stopped

apparently céline is a major influence on internet users -- his prose style and his politics

i derive my underpunctuated, overindented posting style from futami, whose innovations in the field of being annoying on the internet merit deep study

I basically associate it (in men at least) with unrelenting passive-aggression and perfect reason dodge.  It gets me thinking Ayn Rand had a point about the evil evaders.  Whatever else you might say about her, the lady knew how to rock the punctuation.

Actually the ellipses is rather helpful when it comes to Rand.

it was totally appropriate there.  Rand kicked ass at punctuation.  Period.

I inserted the ellipses. :-\

outside the first few and last few words, I omitted the entire book,

I hate when people write like that. I also hate that two-dot ellipsis. Is it supposed to be the new.. slimmer.. version.. or something?

Wanna know what else I hate? Misuse of the word literally. If you were literally falling apart on the floor, that'd be a huge mess. If you were to literally eat a horse, you'd have lots of PETA-type people angry with you. If you were literally freezing outside, I wanna know how you came back to life to talk about it.

I literally came at the prospect of lampooning MAF ... but then I realized I neither came nor was able to lampoon MAF.

I have a habit of using lots of ellipses... I think that's because during my formative years I grew up spending a lot of time playing poorly translated 8 and 16 bit RPGs.

my friend was mad at Golgo13 for NES because EVERYONE used ellipses all the time during dialog.

lol my friend used to ask me what the ellipses meant in Golgo 13.  I told him they were grunts, or him 'judging' whatever information was just told.

I hate questions like that, motherfucker you watched the same shit I did!
