Title: our dog might be dying
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on April 24, 2008, 07:00:45 AM
he suddenly developed heart, breathing, eating, moving problems.  may have been poisoned
he's only 7 years old and is the cutest, most fun, most soulful dog I've ever known.
I've been up 36 hours hoping he gets better.

That sucks.  I dogsat for a friend recently.  I've known those dogs for years and it was sad as hell to watch them limp around while remembering how they used to be.

My aunt's dog (shetland sheepdog like mine) was killed by some malicious asshole who fed it some hamburger meat with ground glass in it.  It had to be euthanized because of how much pain it was in.  It was only like six years old as well.

Have you taken it to a vet yet? :(

My cousins dog recently almost died from drinking anti-freeze.

I remember when our old dog, this half miniature schnauzer/half schnauzer, started to get age problems. He was around 13 or so when he finally passed away, I think. He got slower and slower nearly every day in his last few years. When I was little, I used to race him down the stairs in the morning and he would always run by like a gray blur and beat me single pawedly. When I started to catch up to him, I thought I was just getting faster. Then I realized he was getting slower. By the end, he had to slowly walk down one step at a time, wheezing and coughing.

I still remember waking up, and my brother and dad were in the bathroom taking care of him because he hadn't been able to stand up that morning. They had him down on towels down in the bath tub, trying to keep him in one place, using a damp cloth to cool him down and make him relaxed. Panting and wheezing. I went downstairs and waited with my mom for what seemed like ages. Eventually my dad came down and told us that he had been in a lot of pain but that he wasn't going to hurt anymore, and I started to tear up but didn't know what to do. Apparently my brother, who was only 5 or 6 when he picked out that dog as a puppy, was holding that dog in his arms and crying at the very end.

I hope your dog is okay. I really wouldn't want that to happen to anyone else. Not so early. :'(

about the best I can say right now is that he doesn't appear significantly worse than five hours ago.  maybe this is rock bottom and he'll start going in the other direction at some point

Poor pup. :( Have you taken him to the vet yet? What's his prognosis?

All these dog stories are making me tear up.

man Id kill someone if I found out they did that

a dying dog sucks, had two of them die on me in the last few years... I wasn't around when my first dog sierra died (it was pretty unexpected) but my other dog named kieante had cancer (a second time) so we all knew it was coming.

We took him to the vet.  She's not totally sure what the problem is but thinks it's likely a spinal cord problem, and prescribed steroids.  So far (10 hours in after start of treatment --- she says we should see an improvement or decline within 24 hours) he doesn't seem to have gotten noticeably better or worse.

I'm glad you're there for your poor dog though, I hope he pulls through.

Thanks, everyone.  He seems a little better than he was this morning, but it could be my imagination.

Thats happened to my dog a few times.  He'll just find a place to hide and shiver from the pain but the steroids have always helped him get back to normal.

My wiener dog Buddy got bit by a rattlesnake when I was little.  :(  He had to be put down.  He used to jump and try to bite our horse's dicks.  He was so cute.

Other than that, the only other dog I've had to deal with dying was my ex's rotweiler.  i didn't like him.  he tried to bite me shittons of times.  He was stupid.  But I still felt bad when he died.  Someone had fed him poison apparently.

We had to put my childhood dog down after 11 years when she started barking all the time non stop. I think she was senile.

Oh damn, I'm really sorry to hear that.  At least you gave him a good life which is more than a lot of poor dogs in this world get.

I know it's the cheesiest thing otherwise, but have you read the Rainbow Bridge poem? I really think it helps. It helped me.
