Title: help me decide what version of the ps3 to get... (got it!)
Post by: Mupepe on April 25, 2008, 10:30:37 PM
so, I set aside money and have justified it enough with a bonus coming on wednesday to buy a ps3.

I originally wanted to wait for the 80gb MGS4 bundle, but i don't know if i want to wait til june and if the BC is really worth it.  I just bought a slim ps2 like a month or so ago.

is the ps3 upscaling of ps2 games really that good?

help me out guys

Got the 40gb version...

60gb

80 is good but BC is not 100% so you should look up the ps2 games you have to see if they work first

Upscaling is a really great bonus, also you're entertainment center will be more streamlined without an extra ps2.  The best value would be the MGS4 pack as you technically get a free game and dual shock 3 is standard.  I own a 60GB model, which I bought last year.  If perfect backward compatibility is important to you try to pick up a 60 version if you can find one.

Also you can upgrade the HDD very easily, without compromising your warranty.  The PS3 supports SATA drives up to 250GB and USB drives up 500GB.

Hm, so the upscaling is pretty good?  I mean, is the difference really noticeable?

Depends on the game really.  I remember seeing an image thread on GAF with comparison pics for reference.  Honestly, I haven't heard of too many issues with software BC of the 80 giggers.

I like the upscaling, but I haven't hooked up a regular PS2 to the same TV either.

Get a 60GB. MGS4 pack is supposed to be very limited quantity so preorder now if you're diong that.

why the hurry? i'd wait for the bundle but if you are in a hurry, grab the 40gig and get a ps2 component cable, it will do just fine.

upscaling makes a difference, not a big one, but its good enough.

for example this photo will show you nothing: http://xs226.xs.to/xs226/08176/blurry404.jpg

That pic is kinda deceptive, Viz.  Most PS3 games don't use that cartoony style.

Honestly, Mupepe, I don't think a fully compatible PS3 is worth the extra money and effort to find it.  I have the original 60gb PS3 and see little benefits from the 1080P upscaling of PS2 games.

Upscaled or not, PS2 games are still gonna look ugly on a HDTV.  Especially if you have a LCD.  If you want your PS2 games to look good, it's best to keep a CRT TV around.

Also, if the PS2 game already has native 480P rendering, then it will look much better with native 480P than upscaled 1080p.

Here is an IGN article that shows some comparisons between the various modes in which PS2 games can be displayed in:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/793/793775p1.html

"Most of us here happen to prefer sticking with 480p when possible, but we're still keeping our fingers crossed that Sony will one day release an update that actually renders the games in HD rather than just scaling the image"

PS2, PS3. Same difference.  Look at Silent Hill.

Hm.  I'm not really in a rush.  But if I'm not going to use the BC I see no point in waiting for it.  I think I'm going to look for a 60gb version and if I can't find it, just go for a 40gb

Do you have an HDTV?

PS2 games look assy on it if they arent uspcaled through a BC PS3. So yeah Id wait for the MGS Bundle. I really see no reason to get a 40 giger unless your desperate for Warhawk or something

60gb also has a memory card reader.  It's actually pretty handy for watching pics.  If that's gonna be a useless feature to you, then just get the 40gb and use the extra cash for Blu-rays.

BC really isn't worth the extra $100 bucks or so when you've already bought a new PS2 recently.

That's what the Sony rep has been talking about.  Although, it's not official - so if you prize backwards compatibility, get the model you want.  I just think it's eventually going to be implemented from my talks with multiple Sony representatives, so I got one.

I've head the same thing Willco has.  One of my friends is the manager (or whatever they call them there) of the video game section at Best Buy, and whatever reps he talks to tell him the same thing.

It only makes sense - unless they do a software bc, they won't be able to sell current 40 gig owners (or future PS4 owners)  PS2 games over PSN.

Will they be increasing the number of titles supported? Right now its at about 80%, but 90% or better would be a great improvement.

http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=4199  Here's where I got mine.  I don't mess around with that cheap shit.  This cable was built with the PS3 in mind, so you know it's good.  Plus it's got gold plating to keep a strong signal.  $100 is a paltry sum to get the best out of your PS3.

Uncharted sounds so awesome and then there's a Nazi U-Boat and then it's like, kind of boring.

My PSN name is TheFakeShemp.  Be sure to add me.  We can play, uh, nothing - I get multiplayer games on the Xbox 360.  If you're ever up for Warhawk, we can play that.  I returned Uncharted.  I think I'm going to try and nab a used copy of Ninja Gaiden Sigma or Devil May Cry 4 if I can down the line.
