i turn 32 this year and still go to punk shows.

sometimes, i'm one of the few people at the show who is old enough to drink.

i get stared at.

on monday i went to a metal show and wore a sports jacket and my Blue Note records polo shirt.  my companion wore a black dress, black leather boots fishnets and severe make up.

i'm not having a midlife crisis, but it feels as though, to an outside observer, i have the appearance of someone who is.

Mid-life is typically considered late 40s to 50s.

i still look younger than i am

get carded all the time, unless the register person is close enough to see the spiderweb of regret lines around my eyes

i'm just starting to feel like i have missed out on a great deal by busting my ass for 10+ years at a relatively nonprofit business, instead of throwing caution to the wind and traveling like i wanted to do

38, 2 old 4 this 4um

i had talent, once

i won acting awards

wrote a play that won a state award here in nc

got a personal note from weird tales magazine telling me the couldn't use my story but asking me to submit again - it was handwritten on the back of their form rejection letter by a cool editor

now i have paint spray clotted in my nose, and a decade of regret for a sense of duty that was, in fact, nonsensical all along

:gun

this beer is pretty good, though

i'll have to dig the letter up

i sent out a bunch of stories in 91

got a handful of rejection letters, no lie, all on the same day

crushing

in a fit, i threw everything i'd ever written into the trashcan

decided a few days later that was a bit of overreaction

but my dad had cleaned fish and, well, i had to dig through a bunch of fish guts to get everything out

i'll see if i can find it

when you hit 36 you may legally date girls half your age!

In Australia it's 32!  But compare these two conversations:

Conversation 1.
Me aged 29: "I'm going out with an 17 year old!"
My friend: "High five!"

Conversation 2.
Me aged 30: "I'm going out with an 17 year old!"
My friend: "Get away from me you fucking pedo."

:(

that realisation is coming up on me soon :(

Once you hit 30 and accept that wearing track pants in public will make all girls under 20 run from you in fear, it gets easier.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way, except I think my output was better when I was just sticking to alcohol rather than doing lots of drugs.  Nowadays it's just notes and things I start and get a few pages into and drop.  Maybe I should start doing drugs again.  I miss them so much :(

Look at it this way .. having a mid-life crisis means you still have hope and a desire to better yourself. Some people don't even have that.

IQ may be mostly static, but knowledge absolutely is not.  I can't believe you think everything in life outside of IQ and personality is just value-added nonsense.  Just because a lot of people suck and you feel you can't improve your life at all doesn't mean that holds true for everyone.  I've seen a ton of people fail...and I've seen a few turn shit around.  So you can "can't" all you want, but that's more naive, negative, and lazy than some failure who still believes he "can".  God, stop being so fucking depressing.

An increase in crystallized intelligent, which increases for all adults anyway, is not going to affect a meaningful change in a human being whose life outcomes are tied to his or her IQ and personality traits. You may have seen people change their lives, but you have not seen them fundamentally change who they are--because they can't!

An adult's IQ and personality traits are stable throughout adulthood, and fairly intractable. All other improvements are window dressing, so I will stick to "can't."

No one needs to change 'fundamentally'.  Like just about every other chump, you've adopted a self-defeating outlook to keep from making any of the changes you need to be making.

How old are you?

My parents are 43 and 47 I think, and they got motorcycles like 2 years ago. Total midlife crisis.

Denying that you're in a midlife crisis is a perfect sign of being in a midlife crisis.

Young people goof off over pm's.  You're just trying to hold on to youth a little bit longer by goofing off over pm's.  Totally signs of a midlife crisis.

Lots of time and effort.  Actually I shortcutted by using Word and made the pattern with "O" and "D" and then used the replace function.

I don't want to sound patronising, but I've spent a lot of time around computers so this was actually fairly easy for me to accomplish.  You might want to wait until you get more experience before you try things like this.

My mom actually hasn't ridden hers since the weather warmed up. She got rear-ended in a car accident about two months ago, and now her neck is really fucked up. Her doctor hasn't cleared her to ride yet; he might never clear her. They're certain she can't ever ride roller coasters again, though, which is pretty devastating to her. :(

Her bike is only a 250cc though. She's tiny like me and probably wouldn't be able to handle much more.
