Beginning in the Fall, Criterion will start releasing films on Blu-ray.
We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.
Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.
Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.!"
CHUNGKING EXPRESS IN HIGH DEF! FUCK YEAH!

So much double dipping to do. It will be a triple dip on The Third Man.

How expensive is The Last Emperor Blu-Ray going to be? The DVD is only just 60 freaking dollars. :-\
-
God, I could only imagine what a HD Criterion release would look like considering the amount of effort they put into working on transfers for DVD releases.
-
They said the Blu-rays will be the same price as the DVDs.

Same price, but. . .

I already got the mega set, cry.

Yup. I updated the OP.
-
my god yes *starts humping air*

I'm stoked. Days of Being Wild and As Tears Go By are coming out on Blu-ray this Summer, and then Chungking Express in the Fall!
Soon, I'll be able to give some poor EBer who has never witnessed the glory of WKW the DVD boxset of his films.
-
won't you take me...to bonertown

:-* I don't even know who WKW is.
-
i always thought Criterion was a star trek wtf

As soon as Happy Together and Fallen Angels come out on Blu-ray, the boxset is yours. :D
Universal and Criterion need to work out a deal to see In the Mood for Love come out on Blu-ray, and Sony Pictures Classics needs to get off their ass and release 2046 on Blu-ray.

I don't own any Criterions.

They're not Criterions. The only Wong Kar Wai movie that's been released by Criterion is In the Mood for Love. The announcement of Chungking Express on Blu-ray is big news, since the DVD was released by Disney/Miramax.
-
Oh. I guess my first Criterion will be Blu-Ray, then! :P
-
Okay, at the risk of bringing the wrath of EB down upon me...
I didn't like Chungking Express. *ducks*
But people love WKW enough that I feel I should give his work a second chance. So, what's the best "other" WKW movie to try out?
-
In the Mood for Love you stupid hooker.
-
I think I just suck at enjoying movies for visuals :/
-
In the Mood for Love is actually good, though!
-
I'll probably pick up The Last Emperor, The 400 Blows, Contempt, The Third Man, and Bottle Rocket because I'm a Wes Anderson cigarillo.
Assuming of course that I have a PS3 by then.
-
YES YES YES YES YES.

Have you seen Solaris?
original or clooney remake?
well, the answer in either case is "yes"
-
I'm done with discs myself. A movie library does look attractive when well displayed, but I rarely watch movies twice.

same here. when i look at my fat stack of DVDs, i can probably count on two hands the movies i've actually watched twice. i think i'm done being a collector.
but fuck, criterion on blu-ray makes me horny.
-
I watch a lot of movies repeatedly with friends. I love owning movies so that whenever I feel like watching something it's as easy as "i have it, pop it in"
-
^ said from someone with a social life!
-
if we socialize over a ps3/360 controller, does that still count?
